Smackdown's Spring/Summer

Recommended Posts

Guest Three minutes

Now this can be seen as looking too forward, especially considering Wrestlemania has not happened yet. But anyone have any ideas as to where Smackdown may be headed with its upper midcard main event scene as we head into the Spring and Summer. My thought was that it looks as if it will be Angle/Cena, Eddie/BigShow (for the title) and Brock/Old School Undertaker. Those were just some of my ideas...what do you think will happen?

I'd say all of those have a strong possibility of happening.

If we see a talent influx toward Smackdown, particularly in the form of RVD and Booker T, it creates several new match-ups with two performers that need a move as bad as the show needs them. At that point, I could see Show/Booker, Angle/RVD, Lesnar/RVD, Lesnar/Booker and Angle/Booker all happening. That would pretty much leave Guerrero, Cena, Booker, RVD (and maybe 'Taker, depending on where he ends up) as the top faces while Angle, Lesnar and Show round out the top heels. They need one more heel on top though, and I don't know who that would be.

Haven't we seen WWE completely switch focus on shows depending on which is going to be up for renewal, etc? Despite both shows being strong ratings grabbers for their respective networks, they usually give more attention to one if they think there's a remote chance of it being dropped.

Smackdown was up for renewal, so they focused on that, and now they're mostly concentrating on Raw again.

Despite Eddy as champ, Smackdown is getting less and less watchable. Raw's got more work put into it, but it's overwritten now. However, it's pathetic when Raw outshines Smackdown for weeks at a time for wrestling.

I was scared Smackdown was going to be heavily pushing that Playboy angle we've been hearing about--haven't heard too much about it (in comparison to last year), but I'm not looking forward to it anyway.

Jeez man, think about how many times in the past year we've seen Big Show vs. Lesnar, Lesnar vs Angle, or Angle vs. Show. They've really used up those matchups at the top of the card, haven't they?

I really think they'll do an extended Angle/Eddie feud for a few months. Cena should be the US champ, and I read that Big Show will need to take a few months off for (knee?) surgery. That leaves Cena without a really good feud, because they won't have Lesnar feuding over the US title, IMO. They did the right thing in elevating Eddie, but they need to elevate more talent as well...or, like you said, bring over a few RAW guys that aren't kidding much of a chance to shine there. Angle/Cena can still be turned into a lengthy feud, and I guess it's possible that Kane comes over to SD with Old School Taker too. I guess we'll see.

I'm actually quite curious myself, as more recently most rumors have been about people jumping to Raw, the world title picture there, etc. The only prominent Smackdown program-related story recently has been Brock/Goldberg.

UGH.

I DESPISE "heel challenges face champ for several months and never wins" feuds. It makes the heel look awful.

Besides, I just want Kurt to lose at Mania and go to Raw/retire.

His options on SD! have been milked dry.

I think it would be fine if they were actually...you know...CREATIVE with it.

Move Angle to RAW? I really think all the moving around and brand changing ideas are just because they can't think of anything creative with what they currently have.

Is the end result still the heel challenging for three or four months, and multiple PPVs and never winning?

Exactly. Kurt has done everything he can on SD! It's time to move on, namely to Shawn Michaels and Ric Flair.

Honestly, I think Angle is winning the belt at Mania, and Eddy will start his legitimate chase that everyone bitched for a few days ago. Clearly, Eddy is money, and the win over Brock cements him as a main eventer, it's now time to make the fans die to see Eddy get the belt back in a long chase.

I hope that's true, but it will require Angle to play a deadly heel that the people hate (not love to hate) who has no comedy in his routine at all and is extremely dangerous. The writers haven't shown that they're willing to consistently put him in that role.

...So, No Mercy 2003 basically?

I hadn't even thought of that, JRE. Those were the top three matches at No Mercy last year (well the old school Undertaker thing is a bit of a twist on it). What Michrome said about Angle winning the title is interesting, I really hadn't figured that he would. But come to think of it the title matches at Wrestlemania are the matches with the most doubt as to the result (especially if they do Brock-Taker, which means that Taker can't lose to Kane before that) So if Angle does win at mania how would that change things? I don't see Cena fighting for the title until July or August and he may lose a title match before he finally "grabs the brass ring" at Survivor Series. That's if Angle wins the title

I can't sit through another Angle/Cena rap off without breaking my TV, no matter how similar it is to Bret/Austin.

Cena/Angle rap off vs Massively incoherent Flair and Angle promo's.

Massively incoherent promos all the way.

Remember, when dealing with top characters, the more indecipherable the better.

The Angle head bob vs The Flair crazy old man verbal freakout.........which one will triumph?

I don't know, but I'm giddy just picturing it.

BTW, if Kurt MUST stay on SD!, Undertaker all the way.

But then it would be Dead-Man Undertaker he'd be feuding with instead of Biker Taker.

Imagine the cutting-edge promos: We could see Angle catch a glimpse of the Dead Man and soil himself. He'd run away into the locker room as Cole giddily laughs at the wet spot on the back of Angle's tights. High-larious!

I'd go with more of a "Angle is too clueless to be afraid" vibe.

Have him think the whole thing is the most absurd thing he's ever seen in his life.

But then you're ruining the Dead Man Undertaker's gimmick, which is supposed to be one of the biggest returns in WWE history. Plus it just completely ruins continuity. Kane is scared shitless at the idea of his brother returning from the dead......but Angle realizes it's just one big, fake gimmick?

If they were to have a storyline, the best one would be to make Kurt have somewhat of a kamikaze mentality. He's scared of the Undertaker but he doesn't want to back down. So he rallies against his fears, sometimes putting his own well-being on the line, just to get some damage on Taker. Picking his spots wisely when he attacks him in the ring or backstage....brawling with Taker, first absorbing some damage before fighting back with a steel chair or another weapon.....sacrificing his body by jumping off the top rope onto the Dead Man (possibly in a tag match or even a promo in the ring), thereby taking them both out.....etc. Taker will look strong, but Angle will look smart - and look like he has a huge set of balls for taking on someone that even he's afraid of.

Kane understands what he's going up against, Kurt doesn't.

Kane also knows a pissed off dead man after the guy that killed him isn't going a day at the picnic...

How exactly can they phase Dead Man Taker into a program with anyone?

Why would a guy whose come back to life be concerned about about a Scrap of Gold or about some bald headed goof?

And AS seems to be gunning for My "Captain Oblivious" Angle for Kurt I suggested recently.

An interesting idea that I think they should have done a long time ago: Do another "Draft". This way, there's a built in reason to move people, and create new feuds.

Personally, I like the first draft, and was kind of hoping that it would've become a yearly thing. Makes it seem more like a professional sports organization.

Maybe, include the concept of free agency. There could be meetings with various wrestlers, talking about their contracts coming up, and negotiations. It would also be a unique, and more realistic way to move guys.

Either way, RVD and Booker NEED to go to Smackdown!.

It would make sense by now....

Not sure how they would set it up...likely something absurd...

Yeah, Angle vs. a walking corpse would be great.

The feud would be great, the match would be pretty good.

Better than I can say for anything on SD!.
