MLB 2004 Predictions

Recommended Posts

The Sox/Yankees feud will continue to carry the Sox in terms of people caring for them. When it comes to the Cubs, it'll probably be more damaging but the fans will still want them to keep on winning more World Series championships which keeps their appeal going.

In Chicago. The National appeal is gone.

And OctoberBlood, repeatedly saying "I don't have to repsond to that" makes you look like you don't have an actual point.

Are you John Henry?

Winning a World Series, no matter what team you are, Cubs, Sox, ANYONE .. does absolutely NO DAMAGE. Unless, you are some moron on the street saying "Aw, poor cubs .. whoever they are, since I dont watch baseball .. but I wish they'd win!11" .. I mean, you know? Winning has no damage whatsoever to a real fan base, and thats what Boston and Chicago both have. It's crazy to think otherwise.

Uh...AS the freakin' president of the MLB(Selig) ordered Henry to not respond so Henry's smart by not defying him and getting slapped with a hefty $5,000 or $10,000 fine for a response that won't be worth it.

And since when does it matter if a team has national appeal? Pretty much any team that makes the playoffs has some sort of national appeal somehow(Bonds winning the WS in 2001, Angels upsetting the Yankees en route to the WS and then upsetting the Giants, Yankees beating the Sox in a heart breaker, Cubs possibly making it to the WS and Florida upsetting the mighty Yankees in 2003). It's all a matter of what spin the media puts on the playoffs/series that year.

It's because you are making yourself look like a fool and I'd rather not waste my time with you. You act like baseball in Chicago will die if they win the World Series, or it wouldn't be worth watching the Cubs if they break the curse. That is absolutely stupid and the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard a baseball "fan" say.

I never said it was going to kill their loyal fanbase, I said it would kill their national appeal.

You're not going to have the whole nation get excited when one of those teams gets to LCS or the world series because there is no more jinx.

A team that was once a possible huge post season ratings success is now no longer any different from the Braves or Blue Jays or whatever.

Neither of those series did very well in the ratings or fan interest categories.

I slightly agree with AS's case that Chicago Vs Boston would be bad for Baseball...

Eventually, One of these two teams WILL win the world series (although Maybe NEVER in our lifetime)...Chicago Vs Boston would be really the only HUGE draw baseball can garner for the world series that could rival The Superbowl (AS, You can NOT deny that), The hype would be out of this world, We got a taste of the madness that Chitown/Boston would have brought when each team was on the VERGE of hooking up before Boston Choked and Agonzo fucked up the sure fire double play...and led us to New York Stinking up the joint for the world series and Florida giving the aura of "who cares" that was SUCH a letdown from the emotional high that was the 2003 Playoffs prior to the series.

Chicago/Boston would NEVER live up to the hype, it would be impossible to too, Also, If Boston Beats Chicago or Vice Versa, It cheapens the championship because you kinda have that media inflicted Asterisk *They beat the OTHER cursed team*.

I love Chicago and Boston make themselfs out to be perpetual losers when they have WON championships over the last couple decades (Boston shares two Super Bowl Titles and many NBA titles and Chi-Town picked up the Super Bowl in 1986 and of course those meaningless Six NBA titles as well)...The REAL cursed City is Cleveland. No titles at ALL since 1949.

While a Cubs/Red Sox W.S. wouldn't turn me away from the game. I do agree with AS, that the winner would lose it's national appeal. It's one of the great stories every season. Can the Red Sox finally get out of the Yankees shadow. Will the lovable loser the Chicago Cubs end their World Series drought? In away the idea of Bud Selig handing the Trophy to Terry Francona or Dusty Baker doesn't seem right.

And I don't at all.

For a one time shot, it'll be the biggest thing ever.

After that, one team is worthless nationally.

Well, I must ask...

Aside from the Yankees since everyone hates them with a passion(they have HHH effect, they may job to a up and comer but they make sure everyone forgets that team right away)...

WHO HAS NATIONAL INTEREST?

No One.

Baseball is a sport dominated by regional popularity

Chicago Cubs

New York Yankees

Boston Red Sox

are the only three teams with a National Idenity that transcends just their regional locations.

Admitedly, The appeal of Boston and Chicago is the "Curse"...

Here's another question

Why are The Sox percheived to be the Grumpy Bitter Cursed team that bitches about everything and The Cubs are the lovable Losers?

I mean yeah, Boston and Chicago have won titles in other sports, even though I think that Chicago is more cursed with the Hawks on a 43 year Cup drought. Its just something about baseball and having your team win it all that makes the World Series so magical. Its something that I have only seen once in my life and that was in 1990. I was kicking around in my mom when the Tigers won in 1984, so for now the Reds shocking the world and beating the Big Bad Bash Brothers is the highlight of my baseball life

Exactly. Baseball needs those three draws.

The Cubs take it better. (Wait til next year)

The Red Sox blame everything on the Yankees. Buckner was somehow our fault.

Same here for me...

Yet, Ironically enough I always felt the Bengals trip to the Superbowl (23 that is, I can hardly recall the first one) was BIGGER for the city...

I just feel in this day and age, winning the Superbowl means more then the world series...

I mean look at the last three winners of the World Series

Arizona

Anaheim

Florida

Not really baseball "towns" and Yet look at Football, 2/3 were won by New England, a very passionate sports city that oddly enough still treats the Patriots as the Proverbial step-child to the Red Sox that can NEVER get the job done.

That brings up an INTERESTING thing to note

We all know "B"s have inflicted MUCH pain on the Sox (Buckner, Bucky, Boone, Babe, Ben Affleck etc)

Can You imagine if they play the fucking ASTROS in the world series

Bagwell

Biggio

Berkman

I'm praying for the Killer B Triple Threat Attack with Roger Clemens once AGAIN killing the hopes of Boston by throwing a Shutout in a Game Seven shootout with Pedro.

Houston/Boston is almost as disgusting as Chicago/Boston to me, for purely personal reasons.

but be honest here AS...

Wouldn't Clemens FUCKING the Sox AGAIN just be the most amazing possible conclusion.

Or we can just have HHHankes squash the playoffs and job to this year's CINDERALLA team and then sledgehammer the off-season and sign about another $150 million of payroll.

They are the fucking Pittsburgh Pirates. Enuff said. 5th Place isn't good enough for them, If it weren't for the shitty Brewers they would be eternally locked in last place.

can you root for Pettite?

You can't hate a guy for wanting to play at home since he already has his ring anyways...

No.

In fact, I'm actively campaigning at Yankee sites for the cause of never retiring his number (46) and in fact, giving it to the lowliest of Yankees.

Because he was at a point in his career where family meant more to him and he really done all he could do with the Yankee Franchise?

That's kind of bitter and harsh...but honestly speaking and put aside your bias...Would he actually reach the ranks of having his number retired by the Yankees?

You do not walk away from the New York Yankees.

If he would have stayed, and pitched like this for another five or six years, absolutely.

It's not like he left for a larger contract to a shitty team...He went HOME to his family.

Other big Yankee Players moved to other teams...Why give him the burn when others left as well...

It's not like he left for a larger contract

Which makes it all the harder to swollow.

If he had been offered more money and/or a better chance at the title, there would be some logical reasoning behind it.

Other big Yankee Players moved to other teams

And they hurt their chances of ever getting their number retired.

Pettite still has a chance, who knows.

I personally think he more or less forfeited his shot at immortality in Monument Park, but hey, I'm sure a picture next to the train in Enr...errr Minute Maid Park is just as good

That makes no sense...

He left for GOOD REASONING.

To go to a quasi-Decent team and to be with his Family (remember NYC is a long way from Houston where his family lives) and you shit on that...

but if he left to go to L.A for a 6 Year $120 millon deal...you'd have no problem with that.

That explains why you are a Yankee Fan.

The MINUTE your desire to "be with family" outweighs your desire to make as much money as possible and win as many rings as you can, it's time to hang 'em up.

ut if he left to go to L.A for a 6 Year $120 millon deal...you'd have no problem with that.

I'd have a problem with him walking away, but I'd understand his reasoning.
