In March 2004, independently-wealthy millionaire, Chad Dupree, approached Vince McMahon to express interest in buying the rights to the World Championship Wrestling name. While initially hesitant, McMahon agreed to sell the name to Dupree under a few conditions:

1) WWE would retain rights to all WCW footage prior to and including the Invasion angle.

2) The new WCW could not put on a show in the same night and/or timeslot as any of WWE’s major shows (Raw, Smackdown!, Velocity, and Heat).

3) The new WCW could not hold anything more than 6 PPV events a year for the first 2 years of their existence.

Dupree agreed to these conditions, but what Vince McMahon did not know was that Dupree had the backing of Ted Turner, who desperately wanted wrestling back on Turner Network Television, which was now owned by AOL-Time Warner.

Immediately, the new WCW was set into motion. Turner pulled as many strings as he could to get the new WCW Nitro a timeslot on TNT and managed to obtain the 8 o’clock P.M slot on Wednesday nights.

The new WCW recognizes the following championships:

• WCW World Championship

• WCW World Tag Team Championship

• WCW United States Championship

• WCW Cruiserweight Championship

Sponsorship will play a crucial role in WCW’s financial stability and as such, the following companies have pledged their support: Sony’s PlayStation 2, Sports Illustrated, Nintendo, and Viacom, Inc.

With Chad Dupree at the helm, WCW is now poised to bring this once-infamous name to prominence once again. WCW Nitro makes its return to television on Wednesday, April 7th and this show promises to set the stage for the rest of the year and beyond.

WCW Nitro

Wednesday, April 7th

The show begins with Joey Styles welcoming us to the debut of not just the new Nitro, but to an entirely new WCW altogether. The live crowd behind Styles then emits a huge pop and Styles spins around with an astonished look on his face as none other than Jim Cornette walks out and joins Styles at the commentator’s booth. Cornette begins ranting and raving as Styles tells us to stay tuned despite being flustered.

Ted DiBiase comes out from the back, making his debut tonight. He takes the microphone and introduces himself as the WCW Commissioner. He then informs the crowd that throughout the night they’ll be witnessing tournament matches that will lead to the eventual crowning of the World, U.S., and World Tag Team Champions. He thanks the crowd for showing up tonight and then walks backstage.

TNT CANCELS WCW NITRO

Word came down from TNT executives today that they were opting out of their contract with World Championship Wrestling. While this comes as a blow to WCW, who were just beginning to regain their stride, word has it that they have entered into negotiations with the WGN Network to try and get Nitro back on the air. Operations will resume as soon as possible.

In the meantime, WCW has opted to use one of their 6 PPV dates in May with Slamboree. We'll be back later with a preview for that show. Until then, stay tuned for further details.

PREVIEW FOR WCW SLAMBOREE

WCW, initially scheduled to make their return to PPV with the Great American Bash in June, have now changed their plans and will instead return to PPV in May with Slamboree. This decision was made by WCW Owner, Chad Dupree, after word came down from TNT that they were opting out of their contract with the show. Dupree, while very angry with TNT’s decision, has put all his resources into getting WCW airtime with another station by June. Until then, he has decided to use one of the 6 available PPV dates by putting on Slamboree. Here’s what scheduled to go down on May 9th.

MAIN EVENT – FINALS OF THE WCW WORLD TITLE TOURNAMENT

It’s been a grueling tournament but it’s now come down to fan favorite Sting taking on Raven. Raven has said that his destiny lies with WCW but has not made it clear what that destiny. Sting has been very vocal about wanting to be the first WCW World Champion under the new regime. While no one can be sure what will happen in this match, one truth still remains: WCW will crown a new World Heavyweight Champion.

GRUDGE MATCH

In a clash between two of the hardest hitting men in WCW, Ken Shamrock will take on Vader. Fans nationwide witnessed Vader costing Ken Shamrock his match against Raven. Speculators have said this was Vader’s way of getting revenge on Shamrock for eliminating him from the tournament during the first round, while others have said that Vader feels he has something to prove where Shamrock is concerned. Will Vader dominate Shamrock to take home a victory or will Shamrock cause of one wrestling’s most feared men to tap out?

FINALS OF THE WCW WORLD TAG TEAM TITLE TOURNAMENT

The newly-formed team of Maximum Overdrive will take on the newly-reformed team of Chuck Palumbo and Sean O’Haire. Both teams bring a hard-hitting style to the table, but Maximum Overdrive have the edge in experience. Can youth overcome experience? Will the combined experience of Animal and Bryan Clark be enough to overtake the team of Palumbo and O’Haire, who are former World Tag Team Champions? This climactic battle is sure to be one for the record books!

VETERANS COLLIDE

Vampiro made an appearance at the WCW offices and requested a match against Dustin Rhodes. Why he wants this match is anyone’s guess, but Vampiro says he has his own reasons that are his alone to know. Rhodes and Vampiro are no strangers to championship gold, but their match at Slamboree will be a matter of respect.

WCW UNITED STATES TITLE MATCH

Jerry Lynn survived the 4-man tournament to crown the new United States Champion, but it will now come back to haunt him as he must face not only AJ Styles—who assaulted him after Lynn defeated him to claim the title—but La Parka as well! We know AJ Styles has his eyes set on winning the U.S. title, but La Parka could very well sneak in the back door and steal the title out from under both men!

(A) SURPRISE DEBUT(S?)

WCW officials have sent down word that a new worker has signed a contract with the promotion and he has requested to make his debut at Slamboree. While very little is known is about the identity of this person, we can confirm that they are a name that’s well-known to wrestling fans around the world. WCW officials have thrown a twist into this match, however, because the mystery will be taking on another newcomer! Who will join the company come May 9th? Be there and find out!

CRUISERWEIGHT ELIMINATION MATCH

With the tournament to crown a new WCW Cruiserweight Champion still underway, it has been decided that an 8-man cruiserweight elimination tag match will take place at Slamboree. While some of the talent involved have been seen with the promotion before, we are also able to tell you that some new faces will be involved in this match as well!

----------

WCW Slamboree takes place live on pay-per-view, May 9th at 8 P.M. EST. Be sure to tune in for an event that will once and for all prove that WCW is back with a vengeance!

WCW/WGN NEGOTIATIONS FALL THROUGH

WCW and the WGN Network were unable to reach amicable terms, leaving WCW with still no outlet for their Nitro program. At this point, WCW executives are beginning to worry that the lack of TV exposure will hurt business in a very bad way, but are continuing to put on house shows in order to keep their name out there in the public eye.

Several members of WCW's advisory board have touched upon the idea of doing weekly PPV shows a la NWA TNA but Chad Dupree seems to be set against this idea as it would it seem that WCW is trying to follow in TNA's footsteps.

As of this writing, the Great American Bash is still scheduled to happen but if a TV deal can't be reached soon, WCW executives may have to take drastic measure.

More on this as it develops.

PREVIEW FOR WCW GREAT AMERICAN BASH

As the search for a new home for Nitro continues, WCW brings to its fans their June PPV event… The Great American Bash!

MAIN EVENT – DREAM PARTNER TAG MATCH

Sting and Ken Shamrock will team up to take on the team of WCW World Champion, Raven, and his partner, Vader. Obviously a lot is at stake in this match as every man has something to prove. Raven says it is his destiny to reign as WCW World Champion but Sting is dead-set on winning the title as soon as possible. Vader and Shamrock have no love lost for one another, but can their animosity be contained in the ring? Both men put a cloud of doubt over the entire match!

UNITED STATES TITLE MATCH

Jerry Lynn successfully retained his U.S. title at Slamboree by defeating AJ Styles and La Parka in a triangle match, but at the Great American Bash he’ll literally face his biggest challenge yet as he defends the title against Kevin Nash! Will Lynn’s run as U.S. champion be short-lived? Or will he play David to Nash’s Goliath? Either way, it’s sure to be the challenge of his career!

SPECIAL CHALLENGE MATCH

After witnessing the way Sabu made a splash with his WCW debut, yet another mystery man has requested a match against him and the site for this match will be the Great American Bash! While details on who the mystery man is are few and far between, we do know that it’s someone who has competed with WCW in the past. While this does not narrow the choices down much, if at all, it does allow for better speculation. Sabu is definitely at a disadvantage this time though.

FALLS COUNT ANYWHERE MATCH

After the events of Slamboree, Dustin Rhodes made a call to Chad Dupree and demanded a rematch with Vampiro. Rhodes didn’t want just any match though, and has asked that the match be a Falls Count Anywhere match! Chad Dupree has granted this request and has even gone so far as to ban James Mitchell from ringside.

WORLD TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH

Maximum Overdrive overcame all the odds to emerge from Slamboree as the WCW World Tag Team Champions. The life of a champion is never easy though and Maximum Overdrive are about to find this out first-hand as they defend their titles in a 4-team elimination match! Their opponents will be Palumbo & O’Haire, the Backseat Boys, and Diamond & Swinger. Will new champions be crowned or can Maximum Overdrive continue to dominate the tag title scene in WCW?

SPECIAL DEBUT MATCH

La Parka has recently been contending for the United States Championship, but he’s going to face a new kind of challenge at the Bash as he takes on newcomer, The Messiah! Not much is known about The Messiah, but our rumor mongers have told us that he is definitely a star in the making. However, La Parka been on a losing streak since coming back to WCW, so he has something to prove as well.

CRUISERWEIGHT TITLE TOURNAMENT MATCH

Kid Kash and Nova will go at it in a match to see who will advance to the next round of the WCW Cruiserweight Title Tournament. Rumor has it that Doug Williams will be at the Bash and will be watching this match with great interest. Both Kash and Nova are ring veterans of the highest caliber and should deliver one heck of a match!

----------

Seven great matches! 3 hours of intense action! The Great American Bash has always been a historic event and is not to be missed. Be sure to tune in on June 27th at 8 P.M., live on pay-per view!

- A potential syndication deal with Paramount has fallen through, thus leaving WCW without a home for Nitro. Bowing to pressure from the WCW Board of Directors, Chad Dupree has agreed to air Nitro as a weekly PPV show on Tuesday nights until Nitro finds a new home. Word has it that WCW is negotiating with cable channel F/X, but no deal has been reached yet.

- With Nitro now being a weekly PPV event, any further plans for bi-monthly PPVs have been suspended until Nitro finds a new home.

- With his All Japan contract having expired, Japanese superstar, Keiji Mutoh, has expressed a desire to make a return to the United States and has entered into negotiations with WCW. Whether or not a deal can be reached is uncertain but the interest is there for both parties.

WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE MATCH

Raven vs Sting.

Match Background: This will be a special guest referee bout. Ted DiBiase will be the referee for this match. Sting and Raven have been feuding for quite some time now. This match is for the WCW World Heavyweight title. Raven has been WCW World Heavyweight champion since 09 May 2004.

The Match: Raven charges into the corner, but EATS BOOT and staggers backward. Raven walks into a side slam. Think about how much talent it takes to side slam someone. Nash can do it. Hooks the leg for a two count. Raven blocks a kick from Sting. Trying to channel the spirit of Misawa, Raven ends up chanelling Lex Luger instead and nails a running forearm to the face, minus the steel plate, of course. BAAACK Body drop by Sting gets a bit of a pop from the crowd. There's a two count on the pin. Raven scores with a standing spinebuster. Pinfall attempt: ONE...TWO...NO! I would have bought that as the finish! Sting charges into the corner, but EATS BOOT and staggers backward. Raven goes for a splash but Sting puts the knees up. Raven walks into a side slam. Think about how much talent it takes to side slam someone. Nash can do it. Covers for a quick two count. Powerbomb on Raven. Pinfall attempt: ONE...TWO...NO! Raven charges into the corner, but EATS BOOT and staggers backward. Raven is a glutton for punishment and just continues to take it during this match. Raven pushes out of a Sting hold. Rude Awakening neckbreaker on Sting by Raven. Remember when that was a legit finish? Spear! Sting is down! Sting can barely stand. Evenflow DDT!!! That shook the ring. 1....2....3!!

My Opinion: A badly blown spot prevents me from giving out more snowflakes. ***3/4
