Shit, here's a better question for you, Frigid. Why isn't Japan viewed as evil, either? They were a huge threat to us, and as far as I remember, they attacked us once and attempted to attack us a second time (via bombs in weather balloons or some crazy shit like that). Hitler never attacked the US (other than sinking some passenger vessels, basically starting the U-Boat warfare). Stalin never attacked us on our soil...Japan was the only country with the balls to attack us at home. Why aren't they the huge enemy?

because as much as Soviet horrors were covered up the Japanese were more so. they killed over a MILLION Chinese, conducted horrific scientific experiments on them, etc.

That and Japan actually contributes technology, where-as Germany contributes the occasional working car model and Russia contributes Vodka.

 

Japan's technological advances and their willingness to share them is really what's gotten them off the hook IMHO. They aren't totally forgiven obviously, but people are saying "Well at least they're doing things to make-up for it"

 

 

Also I personally believe had Stalin came up with an air force as good as Hitler's (in the scenerio where Hitler just keeps to smaller poor surrounding countries) without Germany having said air force then Stalin may have been able to do worse than Hitler ever did. Hitler in turn would have probably helped the allies fend off Russia, and Nazi Germany in turn would be viewed as Stalin's Russia is viewed today

Banky, you do realize that Soviet culture being chic isn't synonymous with subscribing to the political and economic system that brought it about, right? To be chic is to be, first and foremost, visually fashionable. The logo is visual. The logo is cool. Therefore, the logo is chic. It isn't inconsequential, and once again, people are wearing the symbol, not pictures of Stalin. It's an acceptance of the "everyone is equal" ideology, not an endorsement of Stalin. The Nazis were capitalists, regardless of the Socialist badge they carried as part of their name. It's also called the People's Republic of China, but I don't see a lot of republican government there.

 

And of course, the phat logo. Eat my ass if you don't find my answers satisfactory, but the bottom line is that the people who are big fans of Soviet things are largely ignorant of the story behind what they're wearing.

 

I might as well stop wearing anything with the American flag on it also, since we had slaves for years and killed or displaced millions of Native Americans and fabricated reasons to declare war on two other sovereign nations so we could have what we considered to be our rightful land and so on.

I saw a guy at work with a shirt that said "Black Plague, Tour of Europe" and had a bunch of dates of memorable outbreaks and the cities they occurred in. I asked him if I could borrow it, but he hardly knows me.

Because during the periods of detente the Soviet nation was humanized the eyes of the Western world. This partly because none of the Premiers after Stalin were as bad as Stalin, and partly because open hostility towards the Soviets could have led to a war that would ahve destroyed all human life on Earth.
