EdwardKnoxII 0 Report post Posted March 10, 2004 http://channels.netscape.com/ns/crime/stor...110&related=off Ill. Woman Accused of Spiking Kids' Juice NAPERVILLE, Ill. (AP) - A licensed pharmacy technician was charged with aggravated battery for allegedly spiking her children's orange juice with the anti-depressant drug Xanax, police said. Michelle Helgeson, 30, appeared Monday in DuPage County Court, where she was ordered held in lieu of $100,000 bail. State's Attorney Joseph Birkett said more charges could be filed in the case. Police accuse Helgeson of serving the tainted juice on Sunday to her 10-year-old son, and two daughters, 9 and 4. Birkett said Helgeson, who is divorced, called 911 when one of the children became sick. ``She had crushed some pills, put them in orange juice and gave them to the kids,'' he said. When paramedics arrived at the family's home, the children were lethargic but conscious and sitting on the floor, Naperville police Sgt. Joel Truemper said. The children were taken to a hospital and held overnight for observation. Investigators aren't sure why Helgeson might have given the medication to her children. But, Truemper said, ``Between her interview, interviews with her children, physical evidence at the scene ... the decision was, this was not an accident. This was intentional.'' The children were expected to be released to their father, Michael Helgeson, who shares parenting responsibilities with his ex-wife. ``The kids would have been fine if she had never called,'' Truemper said. ``We didn't charge her with attempted murder based on the condition of the kids. It never got close to that.'' Truemper dismissed comparisons between the case and that of Marilyn Lemak, a Naperville mother convicted of drugging and smothering her three children in 1999. Last year, a Northwest Airlines flight attendant who spiked a toddler's apple juice with Xanax lost his job and was sentenced to home confinement after pleading guilty to federal charges. Guest I Got Banned for Sucking Report post Posted March 12, 2004 Yeah, I don't believe in taking medication either. Unless I've got a headache, or something like that, I'll have a Panadol, but that's about it.
