WONDERFALLS

Good pilot episode. The show's style kind of reminds me of "Dead Like Me".

Yeah, in the sense that the main character is not very likeable and has this "better than you" attitude.

How is George not likeable? And I don't get an "I'm better than you" attitude from her. She's got more of a "whatever" attitude.

Alright, call it the "whatever" attitude then. With George on Dead Like Me, I really couldn't care less what happens to her. Her attitude is just too down to get into. And I understand that's how the charcter's written, but I just think they could downplay it a little.

Like when the girl came into the store at Wonderfalls, I know that she's annoying, but Jaye just gave off such a shit attitude. Why should I care for the well being of this person?

I know it's only a TV show and I shouldn't think that much into it.

I also didn't care too much for Ghost World because of this

I watched it. I really liked it. I don't LOVE it, though. But that's the way I am with any new show when I'm not familiar with the characters or even the actors. It's actually a testiment to the show that I really like it. I do have problems with it, however. The toys, thus far, are a bit annoying and the visual style (the fast zooming stuff) is a lil overdone. However, what I like far outweighs what I won't. The star is just great; I love the way she uses her eyes. When it all started to come together, I could really feel it and it felt good. I can see really getting into this show.

WHOO HOO! This week I found two shows (Cracking up being the other) that I really like; maybe television isn't doomed post-angel. These two, with CSI and American Idol, it might be the most TV I've watched it years.

(Variety) Critics loved it but viewers didn’t exactly flock to "Wonderfalls" on Friday, as the premiere of the Fox drama ran fourth for its hour.

According to prelim nationals from Nielsen, the quirky hour about a young woman who communicates with inanimate objects averaged a 2.0 rating/6 share in adults 18-49 and 4.8 million viewers overall. These fourth-place averages weren’t much better than what "Boston Public" had been delivering in the hour.

Show did exhibit some strength among younger viewers, finishing in a virtual three-way tie with ABC and CBS for the hour’s lead in viewers 12-34 (2.0/7).

Fox was more competitive in Friday’s opening hour with the series premiere of reality skein "Playing it Straight" (prelim 2.3/7 in 18-49, 5.3 million), which ran third in 18-49 and led its hour by 2 shares in prelim 12-34 results (2.5/10).

It was the highest-rated program of the evening in adults 18-34, persons 12-34, teens and men 18-34.

Also Friday, the WB laffer "The Help" (prelim 1.1/3 in 18-49, 3.0 million) matched the 12-34 score of its repeat lead-in, "Grounded for Life" (prelim 1.2/4), to place fifth in the younger demo. In its premiere a week earlier, "Help" finished a tick behind a "Grounded" original in 12-34 (1.6/6 vs. 1.7/7) to land second.

But, never fear, for if the show is cancelled after its 13-episode run, Tim Minear himself said:

And don’t fret about network plug-pulling. I have trod this road before and I’ve cleared the way of minefields for you. I can promise that if we only ever get to 13, it’ll be worth it and you won’t feel cheated.

So, uh, huzzah.

Eh, I liked it, but it's nothing I would call hilarious. The only 2 parts where I really laughed were when Jaye got punched over the purse and the scene in the hospital where Jaye's sister and the guy's ex-wife were looking at each other and he couldn't do anything about it. I guess at the end where the nurse was looking at the girl in the store and the guy was worried again was funny, too, but other than that I didn't think it was anything special.

I'll probably give it another chance, especially since I don't usually like pilots, anyway, so hopefully it will get better.

Yeah, I seen it too.

Treble pretty much mentioned all the parts I felt was funny.

The show just didn't seem like a right fit for me. It was kind of odd....which didn't really leave me interested. But, I'll give it another shot.

That second episode was just a tad TOO over-the-top with the way the doppleganger handled herself. I absolutely loved the way they ended the episode, but by the forty minute mark, I was praying for a subplot of some sorts to get me away from the storyline for a few minutes.

Still a big fan of it, though, despite taking Boston Public's spot.

I caught the re-air of the pilot Thursday night after Tru Calling and really liked it, but forgot to tape it last night while I was at work, so hopefully they'll show the second episode next Thursday night after Tru Calling again so I can catch it (well, tape it, since I'll be at work).

I never saw all of the first, but I liked what I saw. I really enjoyed the Binky episode though. You could see the Buffy/Angel humour seeping through in some of the scenes. The "she's sitting on your stool" type of lines.

It was a fun little show, and I'm definately going to catch the next ep.

The family stuff and blurb stuff was great in this episode. And "Mouthbreather" was funny as hell.

I really hope Fox does the right thing and lets this one play out.

This show is pretty smartly written. However, as much as I like the "Jaye discovers something new she loves about life" theme that they've thus far used in both episodes, they better get to something better cause I'm almost choking on the warm-fuzzies here and there's too much preaching for my tastes.

In other news, Caroline Dhavernas is hot.

simi bump. I just don't want to have to chase this down come Friday night.

This and The Shield are the only shows I wait a whole week for. I really hope they can keep up the pace they've started

The 2nd Episode was good, but again, nothing blew me away. I wanted a better payoff since Binky was SO FUCKING ANNOYING that I wanted her dead... or seriously injured. Instead she gets rewarded. ACK!

I have absolutely no clue why, but you know that scene where Binky and.....whatshername, the star of the show.....when they're fighting in the van? I was hoping for some major lesbian action right there.

Same here. I guess it's one of those things...two women + catfight could lead to major lesbian action.

Yeah, I thought Binky had gay tendencies.

I think my favorite part was last week when Jaye's dad came in and gave Binky a kiss on the cheek "Hi Honey."

And she replies back "hi dad" like it's nothing.

It was without a single shadow of doubt the greatest thing EVER posted on not just TSM, but on ANY message board.

I bet there's some messageboard out there where they see you as a hero and have built some sort of statue of you. Perhaps they also have songs.

"When can we go to the crappy messageboard where I'm a hero?"

Hercules Loves WONDERFALLS’ 3rd Episode!!

I am – Hercules!!

Wonderfalls 1.3 FAQ

What’s it called?

“Wound-Up Penguin.”

Who’s responsible?

Teleplay is credited to “Dawson’s Creek” vet Liz Garcia. Though, for the record, the teleplay feels a lot more like Tim Minear (“Angel,” “Firefly”) than Kevin Williamson (“Glory Days”).

What does TV Guide say?

Jaye is told to track down the woman she and Eric found earlier hiding in the bar, but meeting their quarry's other pursuer sends them on a different quest, spiritual in nature, and in opposite directions. Katrina: Carrie Preston. Schofield: Aidan Devine. Custodian: Boyd Banks. Marta: Karen Ivany. Aaron: Lee Pace. Eric: Tyler Leitso. Jaye: Caroline Dhavernas.

This is the one with the nun, yes?

It is!

How soon do we see her in a habit?

There are no habits in this ‘sode.

Isn't this episode #112? Aren't they airing these "Wondefalls" episodes out of order?

Word on the street is "Wound-Up Penguin" was shot late to air early, as was last week's "Karma Chameleon." The idea, we hear, was to enertainingly address pointed questions posed by those who saw the pilot. But the airing order is that prescribed by the show's creators, not the mercurial network execs. The BIG season one story arc kicks in, if I remember correctly, with "Crime Dog" (1.5) which focuses on Jaye's suspicious brother and a chatty cow creamer.

The big news?

Of all the nine or so episodes I’ve seen, I believe this is the one in which Jaye and Eric (the bartender) spend the most time alone with each other. And they spend some of that time alone in a hotel room, ready for the kissing! It may be the romantic of all the various and sundry “Wonderfalls.”

What else is TV Guide not telling us?

“Wonderfalls” may be a dramedy after all. This is the first installment to leave the mighty Hercules a little weepy!

What’s great?

Jaye generally, but especially her understandable confusion over the difference between holy and magic. “Ironic! Considering.” “Or she may have been looking over her shoulder. Possibly. Running away from something?” Jaye’s excitement when the bartender produces drinking glasses. Dhavernas generally, but especially her reading of “What was all that ‘Leave me alone’ screaming about??” “He didn’t Agnes of God me!” “You grew alfalfa and took a vow.” The references to Sky Bully and the world of tomorrow. “You’re not leaving without her. You’re not leaving her with me.” “No. Yes!!” “Or is it just gee dash dee?” “I have to drink in here?!” “Because if it is? It snuck up on me and nobody’s getting anything.” “You don’t suppose she’s meeting us there?” “Well, smell me!” “It’s a rental!” “No! Yes! Can you repeat the second part??”

How does it end, spoiler boy?

The public address system announces a train leaving for New Jersey, and Eric the newlywed bartender puts his arm around Jaye.

Herc’s rating for “Wonderfalls” 1.3?

****1/2

The Hercules T. Strong Rating System:

***** better than we deserve

**** better than most motion pictures

*** actually worth your valuable time

** as horrible as most stuff on TV

* makes you quietly pray for bulletins

9 p.m. Friday. Fox.

Swing the crebbil!
