Well I apprecite the compliment, but I'm not going to be much help since I haven't seen a good number of them. I'll drop my two cents on what I can though. I'm sure RickyChosyu, Coffin Surfer, or Tim Cooke can help you out a lot more if they happen to drop in

 

I deal with Golden Boy on a regular basis, but I'd advise you to ask about VQ before you drop the $$$ as comp tapes aren't usually as good as commerical releases or TV blocks.

Sasuke had defeated Lyger in April for the IWGP Jr. Title, and Lyger had rebounded by winning the British Commonwealth Jr Title (which put him in the J*Crown tournament in the first place) Now all signs pointed to Lyger avenging his loss to Sasuke in the finals and unifying the eight titles.

 

However, this was around the time Lyger got the brain tumor and rather than push him when he could possibly miss a lot of time, he put over Dragon in the first round in about three minutes. Lyger had surgery and had the tumor removed. Lyger returned in October and won the J*Crown in January

Nothing horrible, but a pretty sloppy, forgettable match. Appart from the historical appeal of seeing the debut of the Lyger gimick, it's worthless.

I saw a clipped version of this, but it wasn't too memorable. I liked their 2/88 match quite a bit more.

This is under the rounds system and is all sorts of fun. Rocca busts out lots of heelisms and generally rudos it up on Lyger. The execution is better than any Lyger match I've seen up to that point, and they do great job getting in his revenge spots. Worth watching.

 

4. Jushin Lyger vs. AKIRA (7/28/89)

 

Nogami had some neat suplexes and Lyger was starting to come around as a worker. I remember enjoying this, but I can't say much more than that.

I believe this is the match that ends on a double KO. Good, but not much else. The double KO seemed anticlimactic and up until that point, they seemed to be just rolling out spots.

It's good to see the Lyger/AKIRA vs. Sano/Hoshino tag that leads up to this, with Sano and Hoshino taking apart Lyger's arm to set up his title loss.

 

Lyger puts over the injury huge, but it takes away a lot of the drama as its rather obvious that Lyger can't win with one arm. It is ridiculously strange that they include this and the previous match without the blow off to the feud.

This is a must-have and a career-best performance from Lyger. Get this, whether it's on this tape or another.

No reason for this to be on here. This is another good tourniment to buy, but this match, on its own, serves no purpose.

 

I'll repeat what others have said and recommend you pass on this one. All of the early Lyger matches I've seen are available on a comp from Tabe, along with a lot more matches from the same period and before, during Yamada's unmasked period. All the really good later stuff, aside from Lyger/Guerrero, seems to be missing.

Pretty pedestrian stuff. Lyger still had that horrible costume at this point. In fact when I saw the date I thought it may still have been Yamada. Either way it's OK but not great.

Same thing here. Hase was always fun to watch during this time as everything was full of fire but Lyger wasn't all that great.

I don't think this set is worth $40 to be honest. A quick check of the list has only five matches (#14, 19, 32, 38, 41) at ****+ and personally, I like a higher standard of matches when I'm shelling out that kind of money on a compilation.

3. Jushin Lyger vs. Black Tiger - IWGP Junior Heavyweight Title (7/12/89)

I don't recall this being very good at all.

Maybe I'm just looking back on it through rose-colored glasses, but I remember enjoying the hell out of that match. It wouldn't say it was anywhere near great, but it had a really fun "carny" feel to it that set it appart from any other juniors match I've seen from that time. Rocco playing the dickish heel, Lyger the vengeful babyface, the rounds keeping them from finishing each other off, etc. It really did stand out when I watched it last year.

 

I'll have to revisit it. I've been meaning to get back to that Lyger comp anyway.
