The Fett 0 Report post Posted March 30, 2004 Big news in Houston. Hall of Famer and the Rockets color commentator Calvin Murphy was charged today of sexually assaulting 5 of his daughters. Shocking news because everyone in Houston worships the guy like a saint. Former Rocket Murphy charged with molesting 5 of his children By ROSANNA RUIZ Copyright 2004 Houston Chronicle Former Houston Rocket Calvin Murphy, 55, was charged today with sexually molesting five of his own children in the late 1980s and early 1990s, a Harris County prosecutor said. Murphy, a Sugar Land resident and now color commentator for the team, was charged with three counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child and three counts of indecency with a child, said Lance Long, an assistant district attorney. The charges involve incidents that are alleged to have occurred from 1988-1991, Long said. The five girls are now adults, Long said, and are Murphy's children by three different women. Murphy has a total of 14 children, he said. If convicted, Murphy faces five years to life in prison for the aggravated offenses and two to 20 years for the others, Long said. However, he added, Murphy does not have a criminal history and could be eligible for probation if he is convicted. Long would not reveal the origin of the investigation, saying only that it has been ongoing for several weeks. He declined to confirm reports that Murphy, a member of the NBA Hall of Fame, was expected to turn himself in today. Long urged anyone else who "thinks they've been treated inappropriately" by Murphy to call the district attorney's office at 713-755-6178. He would not say whether he knows of other alleged victims. The Rockets said Murphy asked for and received a leave of absence from his broadcasting duties. http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/sports/2473866

starvenger 0 Report post Posted March 30, 2004 I really hope that this isn't true. I was at the Rockets-Raptors game last Wednesday, and he got one of the best pops of the night (behind Yao, Francis and Vince). Also, 14 kids? Damn.
sfaJack 0 Report post Posted March 30, 2004 I hate Calvin Murphy. He's much too annoying. But THIS is pretty freakin' disturbing. What makes me wonder now: Murphy used to be sort of a "youth sports director" for the City of Houston a few years ago, in charge of running some after-school basketball programs for kids or whatnot. What happened behind those closed doors, I wonder...
nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted March 30, 2004 Only in America can a guy be considered a "saint' after fathering 14 children. How about some accountability and being a little more careful before spreading his seed all over town.

If he was Mormon you would have no problem with it...You ~NON-MORMON-IST According to an affidavit by Drew Carter of the Texas Rangers, five of Murphy's daughters said Murphy either fondled them, performed oral sex, or both between May 1988 and April 1991 when each was younger than 17. Disturbing. I too find his commentating to be grating and annoying, but I really hope this isn't true. Only time will tell.
nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted March 30, 2004 Did he have other daughters that he didn't molest? Was there any rhyme or reason to the ones that he did? (e.g. did they all come from the same mother or something?) It just seems weird that he'd diddle some of his kids but not others.

How about some accountability and being a little more careful before spreading his seed all over town. And what is necessarily wrong with fathering children anyway? Yes, cheating on your wife is wrong. Not taking care of your kids is wrong. But simply having kids? What's wrong with that? Anyway, I wonder if he's going to wear one of his loud suits in court? Except for the fact that I've got something like 100 aunts, uncles and cousins to invite to my wedding. Now, if Murphy had all of these kids out of wedlock/affairs (like Holyfield), then I'd have a problem with it. I'm not really big on cheating on your spouse or not using a helmet if you're single.
