Guest TDinDC1112 Report post Posted April 8, 2004 Holy shit, I can't believe InVasion was that high on the list. And they drew that many buys after they had already totally f'ed up the angle. Imagine if they had done it right.
Guest TDinDC1112 Report post Posted April 8, 2004 9. WWE Royal Rumble (01/20/02) - 665,000 buys - Chris Jericho vs. The Rock I thought Jericho's reign as champ was supposed to be a bust? Yet he headlined the most successful Rumble of all time......... Remember who returned at that show, and probably took the credit for the success? I hate HHH, but he SHOULD HAVE taken credit, as he was what sold the show. The return of HHH was an absolutely HUGE deal then, even if people don't want to acknowledge it. Everyone on the net didn't start hating him (for good reason) until after he had come back. That whole show was built on the premise that it was his return. Jericho was an afterthought his entire title run. The 3 ppv's during his run were sold on other things - RR on HHH, No Way Out was sold on the NWO, and Mania was Hogan-Rock. 1234-5678 0 Report post Posted April 9, 2004 Not to mention Chris Jericho main evented the 2nd most successful WM ever. Okay, so most of the buyrates happened mainly because of Rock / Hogan...but still. The main event is not the last match on the show. It's the match, or situation that was used to promote the show and get people to buy it. Rock and Hogan got all the promotional stuff for WM18, not HHH-Y2J. Rock vs. Hogan was the main event. It sold, or didn't sell the show. Personally, I watched for Austin-Hall.
The Tino Standard 0 Report post Posted April 9, 2004 Holy shit, I can't believe InVasion was that high on the list. And they drew that many buys after they had already totally f'ed up the angle. Imagine if they had done it right. No kidding. I was at the event, and I remember buying my tickets a couple months before, just as the whole invasion was starting... Me and my buddy were waiting in line at a TicketMaster for God knows how long so we could get good seats for what was going to be a HUGE event. ... and then we got a meaningless 10-man tag main event that included the Dudley Boyz and Rhyno. D'oh. EDIT: Actually, I probably shouldn't be so hard on that show... We got a pretty fun Jeff Hardy-RVD match (which is a story in itself... I hadn't watched much ECW, so I could only recognize RVD, but knew little about him... Needless to say I was floored by the reaction he got at the Gund... That was the only Invasion character that came in and REALLY felt like a main event player coming from the outside... Glad to see they followed up on THAT)... The cruiserweight match was fun too, if for no other reason than because in every match, the WWF guy was the face. Then, X-Pac comes out trying everything possible for people to cheer him, but to no avail. Finally, he just looks at the crowd, gets this shit-eating grin and says "Fuck it," and goes back to working heel.
