dubq Posted April 15, 2004 Report Posted April 15, 2004 I just picked it up yesterday. Haven't cracked it open yet, but I've been hearing tons of great things about it from friends. Anyone here read it or plan to? Book Description Hundreds of years in the future, Manhattan has become a deadly slum, run by mutant crime-lords and disinterested cops. Stuck in the middle is a young girl who thought she had no future, but learns she has a great destiny. In a world so poisoned that it doesn't notice the monsters on its streets, how can a street kid like Fray unite a fallen city against a demonic plot to consume mankind? Joss Whedon, the celebrated creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, brings his vision to the future in this unique tale. brokentusk16 Posted April 15, 2004 Report Posted April 15, 2004 I got the issues when they came out (yeah, yeah, joke's on me) and I thought it was a great read. I was a fan of Joss Whedon's Buffy and Angel stuff, but Fray seemed a bit better. It wasn't bogged down by an overabundance of humor (like Buffy). The art fits the story to a tee, Karl Moline is just fantastic. I've actually been debating whether or not to buy the TPB as well.

But it's not terrible, and it vaguely hints at the possible end of the entire Buffy/Angel saga.

If it did, it would have done so by the finale. Maybe the comic book Buffy, but NOT the tv version.

I like the nod to Buffy defeating a great evil that rid the world of magic and demons, and maybe even herself too [at least, that's what I got from the illustration]. Very cool. As for the actual storyline on Fray, also very cool. No complaints so far.

SuperJerk Posted May 23, 2004 Report Posted May 23, 2004 When it first came out, I couldn't help but compare it to the (crappy and fortunately short-lived) tv show "Dark Angel". "Fray" is far from Whedon's best work, but not bad either. I think the best description I can think of is imagine Faith was living in the grim, dirty, flying-car filled Blade Runner future. The series also marks the very first appearance of the Slayer battle axe Buffy used to kill Caleb in the last season of the show.
