Joss Whedon's FRAY

I just picked it up yesterday. Haven't cracked it open yet, but I've been hearing tons of great things about it from friends. Anyone here read it or plan to?

I got the issues when they came out (yeah, yeah, joke's on me) and I thought it was a great read. I was a fan of Joss Whedon's Buffy and Angel stuff, but Fray seemed a bit better. It wasn't bogged down by an overabundance of humor (like Buffy). The art fits the story to a tee, Karl Moline is just fantastic.

 

I've actually been debating whether or not to buy the TPB as well.

The book is a dark one, Fray is much more like Faith than Buffy, and the little surprise at the end kinda makes the whole thing a depressing read. But it's not terrible, and it vaguely hints at the possible end of the entire Buffy/Angel saga.

I like the darkness of it.

 

And I don't think the book hints at Buffy's end. If it did, it would have done so by the finale. Maybe the comic book Buffy, but NOT the tv version.

I've read three chapters so far. I like the nod to Buffy defeating a great evil that rid the world of magic and demons, and maybe even herself too [at least, that's what I got from the illustration]. Very cool. As for the actual storyline on Fray, also very cool. No complaints so far.

Finished FRAY on the weekend. Great stuff. I wish it had been around for more than 8 issues. The twist at the very end was awesomely typical of Joss. I love it!

Joss also wrote a few issues of the short-lived Angel series as well, didn't he? It's been collected in a TPB, but I haven't picked it up. Has anyone read those issues?

When it first came out, I couldn't help but compare it to the (crappy and fortunately short-lived) tv show "Dark Angel".

 

"Fray" is far from Whedon's best work, but not bad either. I think the best description I can think of is imagine Faith was living in the grim, dirty, flying-car filled Blade Runner future.

 

The series also marks the very first appearance of the Slayer battle axe Buffy used to kill Caleb in the last season of the show.
