NJ wants an MLB team

Recommended Posts

New Jersey deserves a MLB team like LA deserves an NFL team. Meaning, they don't.

It's only the second-largest market in the United States, that's all.

How does that make it deserving? They had two already and they couldn't keep either one.

So suddenly, after over 100 years of New York Yankees, over 40 years of New York Mets, they expect a decent portion of metropolitan NY to decide they're now rooting for the EXPOS? With so many American cities lacking a major league team, and Montreal being a fine baseball town when ownership doesn't suck, there's no way we can have a team in the Bronx, a team in Queens, and a team in the Meadowlands. Put the Expos in Hampton Roads, it's bigger than Milwaukee and the Expos would have the area to themselves in terms of sports.

Make that three. The Chargers skipped town too.

Ideal cities for the Expos......

1. Montreal

2. Portland, Oregon

3. Washington D.C.

4. North Carolina area

1. Well yeah, gotta be.

2. They don't want a team and it would screw up alignment.

3. Orioles would block a THIRD Washington Senators team.

4. From what a man from Charlotte told me, they'd have baseball but it'd be overshadowed by NASCAR all summer long.

So I gotta stick with Hampton Roads or Montreal as where the Expos go. Ideally they should remain in Montreal and replace Olympic Stadium with a cool downtown outdoor grass park.

Well, after doing a Google search for the largest US markets, here are the top 5 without a baseball team (first # is overall rank in US):

8 Washington, DC (Hagrstwn)

19 Sacramnto-Stktn-Modesto

20 Orlando-Daytona Bch-Melbrn

24 Portland, OR

25 Indianapolis

Use that info how you like...

Well, the Orioles will block a DC team.

NoCal is oversaturated as it is with the A's and Giants.

The state of Florida is oversaturated with Marlins, Rays, and spring training.

Portland doesn't want a team.

Indianapolis could be interesting, but how ironic it would be to go from one outdated dome not suited for baseball to another.

Norfolk/Virginia Beach is an untapped market of about 1.3 million, with a decent AAA park right on the coast that could get them through a couple years while they expand it or build a new park, probably a Harbor Park II to keep capitalizing on the ocean beyond the outfield. The Orioles have no problem with it. JUST PLEASE NO SAN JUAN.

Where does San Antonio rank on that list?

San Antonio is 37th overall. Other markets bigger than it without baseball teams are:

27 Hartford & New Haven

28 Charlotte

29 Raleigh-Durham (Fayetvlle)

30 Nashville

34 Columbus, OH

35 Greenvll-Spart-Ashevll-And

36 Salt Lake City

37 San Antonio

The whole list is here. Its from Nielsen: http://www.nielsenmedia.com/DMAs.html

Nashville...

I wonder if Tennesee would be a good market...

and it wouldn't really fuck up alignment as well.

Although I agree that Virgina is the place to go.

Cardinals and Reds might feel threatened? But that's doubtful.

EDIT:

I made a mistake:

Milwaukee, WI: 1,689,572

Norfolk-Virginia Beach, VA: 1,569,541

Milwaukee metropolitan area beats out Hampton Roads by about 120,000. But the Brewers would be successful if they had better ownership so market size isn't really an issue for them.
