New Lance Storm Q and A

Recommended Posts

Your Q's, My A's

April 20, 2004

Q: DO you plan to open your own school after you retire?

A: I’ve certainly thought about this, but no decision has been made. I’d like to think there is no rush.

Q: Are you comfortable with the FAME thing?

A: Yes and No I guess. I’m comfortable in the sense that I haven’t let it change me. I don’t even consider myself really famous. I’m also not comfortable in the sense that I prefer not to get noticed when out in public.

Q: True or False, You have to have a massive ego to succeed in wrestling?

A: I’d say false although it likely helps. Both of our current World Champions are as modest as a man can be, so you can certainly succeed without a big ego.

Q: If WWE restarted ECW would you want to join, or would you rather leave it in the past?

A: This is a tough call. ECW was my absolute favourite place to work, so the thought of having it back is exciting, but I doubt that magic could be captured again. There were so many unique things that went into making ECW, ECW I’m not sure it could ever be duplicated. Bringing it back may ruin its memory.

Q: Have you ever used a Nick/Ring Name?

A: I assume you mean a Nick Name, and not a character named Nick, such as Nick Storm. In CWA Catch in Europe (93 and 95) I was “Tiger” Lance Storm.

Q: How does your wife handle your schedule and popularity?

A: A hell of a lot better than I would if the rolls were reversed, that’s for sure.

Q: What are the 5 things you most need to succeed in wrestling?

A: 1. A look. This includes size & build. All things that make up your appearance.

2. Actual ability. This is in balance with 1. If you have enough of 1 you can get away with less of 2. If you are short on 1 you better have a lot of 2.

3. Love for the business. Our schedule is obscene if you don’t love it you won’t last.

4. Toughness. This business also hurts like hell. If you aren’t ready to tolerate a lot of pain, stay on that side of the TV screen.

5. Personal drive. A lot of talented guys sit back waiting for their break. You have to go make your break.

Q: Which do you prefer, pretaped promos or live in front of a crowd?

A: Live is the best way for everything.

Q: Would you ever consider an acting gig?

A: I’d love the chance to act if the opportunity ever came up. Actually a few of my Book Marks authors who have movies deals for their books have mentioned wanting to use me. I don’t know if anything will ever come of this but it would be fun.

Q: Do you ever give wrestling pointers to Victoria?

A: I’ve actually worked with all the divas before; I certainly wouldn’t leave my sister out of the mix.

Q: Have you ever wrestled Davey Boy Smith?

A: Oddly enough I never met the man. He was on the road full time when I was in Calgary and then later in life the opposite was true. Our paths never crossed.

Q: How do you feel about the Ultimate Warrior?

A: I can’t say that I have a whole lot of feelings about the man. He isn’t really in the business anymore so I don’t have a lot to say. He did work a show in CWA Catch when I was there and I don’t know which I had less respect for, his match or his conduct. Wow that should stir things up!

Q: What are your thoughts on Regal’s return?

A: I couldn’t be happier about William being back on TV. I’ve always found him to be an entertaining performer and I love watching his stuff. From a personal standpoint I think it’s great as well, I both like and respect him immensely.

Q: Was your Un-American run a highlight or lowlight for you?

A: My Un-American tag team run with Christian against Edge and Hogan was likely the most fun I’ve had in WWE. Definitely a Highlight.

Q: Do you like Henry Rollins’ music?

A: To be perfectly honest I’m not sure I’ve heard any. Does he like my matches?

Q: What happened to Joey Styles?

A: When ECW shut down Joey went back into Corporate America. Joey is a very intelligent educated man who can make a good living without wrestling. I always respected the fact that he was always a professional. He loved wrestling but would not pursue it at the expense of his family. He was offered a job by WWE when ECW shut down but he felt he could make more money elsewhere, and has. He and his wife had a baby since and are doing great, and I feel really bad that I haven’t phoned him in forever to say hi. Joey is one of the few people I’ve met in wrestling whom I think I would have been friends with had we met on other terms.

Q: Who is the best commentator?

A: I can only give you my opinion on this and I’d have to go with Jim Ross. I’ve been a big fan of his since his days in the NWA. JR is obviously a huge wrestling fan and his excitement is contagious. Nobody sells excitement like Ross. A close second for me is Joey Styles. Joey is incredible and likely the only guy to pull off calling entire shows by himself. I don’t’ think Joey has ever miss called a move or a person either. He is a consummate pro. Joey Styles and Don Callis were an incredible duo.

Q: Would you ever consider starting you own promotion or being involved in running one?

A: I would never start my own, no. I have no interest in losing money, at least not mine and running a profitable wrestling company is way more work that I care to do at this point. I love booking and organizing shows, so if that opportunity came up I would definitely consider that.

That’s it for another week keep those questions coming, and please brief bullet point questions are preferred.

Till next time,

Lance

Storm always delivers good commentaries, and this is no exception.

Some opinions:

- I'd love to see him open his own wrestling school.

- Wow - she is his sister? Deon, did you know this?

- Nothing new about the Warrior.

- Just a shame that when he was in the Un-Americans, they ended up being squashed and made look like the Undertaker's bitches.

- Jim Ross is one of the greatest play-by-play announcers of all time. Period.

The sister thing is a old running joke on his site. When Victoria first debuted someone said they look the same and it's been going since.

A lot of talented guys sit back waiting for their break. You have to go make your break.

Pretty much what Triple H said in the T&F with Batista, yet no one "goes off."

Younger Superstars should be earning more TV time.  Nothing should be given to anyone.

A couple of examples (in regards to the Triple H quote):

sad thing is he probably doesn't even realize the irony of this statement...poor delusional bastard.

See, I think it's more ironic for Lance Storm to say it, since he's one of the people "sitting back waiting for his break." At least Triple H is a main event player. Politics or not, he's doing something right. Where's Storm?

While Triple H is on Raw getting a television payday, Lance Storm is on a computer answering questions and sounding hypocritical. Why doesn't Storm "go make his break?"

Oh, that must be creatives fault, right? Even those Storm himself admitted that the "guys" have to "go make their breaks."

To make your own breaks you do need TV time. "Making your own breaks" applies in WWE terms to guys like John Cena who was given a rap gimmick that really wasn't that good, and he turned it into a popular character.

That doesn't mean a guy not scheduled for TV can "make his own breaks" by running into the production meeting with a book of notes asking to be put on TV doing this or that. Ask Raven how far that gets you. You're not allowed to be creative or innovative if you're a WWE wrestler, and you definitely can't try to get yourself on TV.

Nothing should be handed to you, of course.

I figure he ment like in the indies, not in the WWE. I mean in all seriousness you could have some of the matches for the WWE but not get tv time because WWE won't have anything for you to do.
