CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted April 22, 2004 OTTAWA -- Jacques Martin has been fired as head coach of the Ottawa Senators, the team announced on Thursday. General manager John Muckler made the announcement at an afternoon news conference. "It's the oldest cliche in the business," Muckler said, "but you can't fire 29 players." Martin's fate had been heavily debated since losing Game 7 of their opening-round playoff series against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday. It was the fourth time in five years the Senators had been eliminated by the Maple Leafs. Martin has been head coach of the Senators since January 1996 and, following Paul Maurice's dismissal by Carolina in December, he became the longest-serving head coach in the NHL. Martin signed a two-year contract extension with the Senators in January, which included an option for a third year if there's a lockout. Let the speculation begin as to replacements. Joel Quenneville and Larry Robinson would have to top my list. I wonder if Scotty Bowman can be coaxed out of retirement, even with his possible health problems... nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted April 22, 2004 Hire Quenneville before the Leafs get the chance. I'd say hire Maurice, but I want him to come to Boston. Maybe you can have Sullivan when the Bruins fire him. (And they BETTER fire him)
treble 0 Report post Posted April 22, 2004 I don't know how he wasn't fired a few years ago. Getting swept by Toronto in '01 should have done him in, so firing him now (when the only reason they lost, really, was running into a hot goalie and their goalie playing like shit in game 7) seems kind of pointless. Guest TheCynicalHateMongerFromHell Report post Posted April 22, 2004 It is stupid that Quinneville is still waiting for a job. I would have fired my coach just to get him as soon as he was fired.

It's mainly because Joe Dumars isn't the GM of an NHL team. Anyways, the coaching fraternity is a tight one, so unless you've been blacklisted, you'll get another chance. Big Bird's probably the most logical choice, as he helped the Devils get over the hump and win the Cup. Couldn't argue with Quennville, though...
