Guest I Got Banned for Sucking Posted May 1, 2004 Report Posted May 1, 2004 Well, it got really bad last night. My computer started spewing out this error message. You know, the one where you can send an error report, which I did - twice - and this error report had the title "LSA Shell". Whether you choose to send or not, about 20 seconds later, a message comes up giving you 1 minute to save what you are doing, because the system is going to reboot. After it does that - everything is gone from my computer, such as My Documents and the such, but it was like that before - about 20 minutes later (that's on an average - it's been up to 3 hours before, which it did late last night), it does it again. I thought that it might've been certain sites that set it off, but now I'm not so sure. If you have any idea, could you please help? Much appreciated.
Insane Bump Machine Posted May 1, 2004 Report Posted May 1, 2004 The Blaster Worm is STILL around? You should update your OS from time to time. And for god's sake, install a firewall and an anti-virus program. Check the 'stuff you need' thread. about the worm: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...Product=win2000
Guest I Got Banned for Sucking Posted May 1, 2004 Report Posted May 1, 2004 Thanks guys. Yeah, I forgot to mention about that warning about the Worm popping up from time to time. It tells me to run my virus scanner, but it picks nothing up. And yes, it is a free edition :S IBM, what link exactly do I click on on that page? The 824146 security patch for my system? And Nik, that link was heaps helpful.
Guest I Got Banned for Sucking Posted May 1, 2004 Report Posted May 1, 2004 Righto, I downloaded the security patch for my Windows XP system, and while the PC had the same symptoms after restarting, things seem fine at the moment - but I shouldn't speak too soon. Edit: The damn thing's still here. I forgot to mention that upon starting up Windows XP, my file is corrupted, so it has to load a back-up one. It gives me 30 seconds to click 'OK' to do it, and another 30 seconds, to which I click 'OK'. Yeah, it also removed every single one of My Documents. They can be found when searched for, and now accessed via a different route. Damn thing - still searching for a way to combat it.
Guest Dazed Posted May 1, 2004 Report Posted May 1, 2004 Both of these sites will give you removal instructions: http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp...&virus_k=125007 http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/sasser.asp
MrRant Posted May 1, 2004 Report Posted May 1, 2004 Indeed Blaster is back. Goody. I advise everyone to check the pinned thread and download a firewall/antivirus program if you don't have one yet.
Guest I Got Banned for Sucking Posted May 2, 2004 Report Posted May 2, 2004 In the second link that Nik gave me, I've hit a brick wall in that I can't find those files in the Task Manager. And, funnily enough, it says that I'm browsing this thread when I come here as a guest. It's hard to do this when the fucking worm keeps kicking into gear while I'm doing it.
MrRant Posted May 2, 2004 Report Posted May 2, 2004 I believe Mcafee has a new Stinger available to remove it. http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger Also install the patch by Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/MS04-011.mspx
Jobber of the Week Posted May 2, 2004 Report Posted May 2, 2004 Microsoft now distributes free CDs that include all the patches, including Blaster, up to a certain date. Just pull the net plug when you reinstall, apply the patches from CD, then plug it back in before getting the patches newer than that.
MarvinisaLunatic Posted May 3, 2004 Report Posted May 3, 2004 Are you able to be infected if you installed the patches and stuff from the last go round? Cause I remember I had it and it was a pain in the ass to deal with and I don't want to have to mess with it again and if theres a newer patch or something to download I want to get it now.
MrRant Posted May 3, 2004 Report Posted May 3, 2004 The patches MS release for this was 2 weeks ago. Check Windows Update.
Guest I Got Banned for Sucking Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 Finally... After a story that would fill a novel... It's fixed. I had to configure the modem settings and some other Internet settings, but everything looks to be a-ok now.
