Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Report post Posted May 3, 2004 From the great mat wrestling early on, the swank brawling and ring steps shots, the superplex, the great leg psychology carrying over from the opening to the finish, the ringpost backbreaker, great heat, the leg giving out, the great finish. I feel pretty confident that this was the WWE Free TV Match of the Week. Just top-to-bottom great and the best singles match from Randy that didn't have HBK or Foley as an opponant. Best match from Venis in forever as well.
Downhome 0 Report post Posted May 3, 2004 I enjoyed it also. Add that match to Noble/Mysterio from Velocity last night, and that's two pretty good matches in two days from the B-shows.

Guest JMA Report post Posted May 3, 2004 Val is a VERY underrated wrestler. The guy even had a good match with TEST on Heat a while back. Randy is also improving quite nicely. His selling during the match with Val was particularly good.
Guest Ace Report post Posted May 3, 2004 Totally agreed on Val being underrated. Obviously he's limited by his outdated gimmick, but there's no denying he can work a decent to good match consistently. Kinda off topic, but thinking about the Orton mega-push, and how Foley gave him the rub, I wonder how well Val could have done back when he turned heel over the whole stuffing Mr. Socko down his pants thing. Sure, it was a silly turn in a way, but I remember Foley saying in one of his books that his biggest regret was not being able to elevate Val during this period. If they had given Venis even half the push they've given Orton, maybe Venis wouldn't be wasting away on B shows today.
The Buzz 0 Report post Posted May 3, 2004 I thought Val was getting over nicely with the chief morley gimmick. Then they squashed him with the dudleys. Then Austin...and oh what's this the fourth return of VAL VENIS! I think Val will get another push down the road, and hopefully he can capitalize on it. He did probably miss his boat to ever become a main event competitor, however.
Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted May 3, 2004 Noble/Mysterio gets my nod for this week. - Rey's Tilt-A-Whirl armbar - Rey's split legged moonsault - Rey kicking and kneeing the fuck out of Noble's chest - Noble chanelling American Dragon with the arm-wringer kick - Noble tossing some sweet punches and lariats. - Noble catching Rey on a slingshot into the ring and Northern Lights suplexing him The psych was a bit disjointed but worked for what it was and the crowd was into it. Even the prescence of Bill Demott and Josh Matthews didn't take this down (that much).
Guest Coffey Report post Posted May 3, 2004 Bah, I think Venis should've been a main eventer a few years ago. The gimmick should've been ditched for good. He can talk and wrestle. That's all you really need. He has a decent look, and appears as if he can garner heat as either a heel or a face. I don't see the problem. Good finisher/moveset too. reign 0 Report post Posted May 3, 2004 That match was great and a true testament to Ortons imporovement but much more so to Morelys' ability which...and I better not get blasted for this...is right up there with Jericho and Christian...he's much better than HHH as far as ability goes..no he'll never be a main eventer as Val Venis but if, as many of you had said before, he could go back to being badass Sean Morely...his run with Lance as tag champ was cool and I think he and***please Smarks...don't crucify me*** TEST! would be a nice fit as a tag team since the odds of Sean getting as singles push are slim...who knows..they were able to make Bradshaw a title contender on SD!...maybe there's hpe for him yet...I hope that we'll be seing more matches involving Morely that qualify as MOTW. Guest wrestlingbs Report post Posted May 3, 2004 It's sad how much Morely has been held back but the Val Venis character. Unfortunately his "badass" character sucks just as much.
Use Your Illusion 0 Report post Posted May 3, 2004 I really liked Venis in his Sean Morely character, which has seemingly been replaced by the likes of Johnny Nitro (who I'm also beginning to become fond of). It's such a shame they completely left him for dead after what they had planned for him ran its course.

Guest Trivia247 Report post Posted May 3, 2004 Its a shame that Venis would have to be saddled with the same gimmick that might have got him over in 98 but it is running out of steam in 04. Val is a talented wrestler, hell still think one of his best matches when comes down to moves is him vs Dlo in Summerslam 98. and I actually liked the "Supply n Demand" Tag team he had with Godfather. This is the third "coming" for this particular gimmick for Morely. They should just let him get away from the whole ex porn star thing and allow him to just be a kick ass Wrestler. I still think even being trapped in low card hell that he is IC calibur if they pushed him, and in time if and or when they finally abandon Val's character past he can be world title calibur
Dark Age 0 Report post Posted May 3, 2004 I liked the match, but I prefered Rey/Noble. I also liked the match Val and Orton had at the start of the year. Its true Val is really under rated. I think he would be best being sent off over to SmackDown! and repackaged entirely. Or they could give him the ~EVIL PORNSTAR GIMMICK. Or not. The psych was a bit disjointed but worked for what it was and the crowd was into it. Even the prescence of Bill Demott and Josh Matthews didn't take this down (that much). I actually thought DeMott and Josh did a really good job selling the match. They did seem to over-exaggerate how good it was (***** from Josh) but then they are wrestling announcers, what do you expect? Bill really put over Noble's mat based attacks and how Rey changed his game plan to take Noble off guard. I just thought it was a really good match with some stuff you dont ever see in WWE cruiser matches. ***1/4 (making it automatically better than SD) But Orton/Val was still good. Zack Malibu 0 Report post Posted May 3, 2004 While I didn't get to see the match in question, I believe the hype you guys are giving it. Orton is slowly coming along nicely in-ring wise, and Val has always been a great hand in the ring. Earlier this year, he and Rico had a match on RAW (I believe it was the same night Jackie popped out of her top, because I remember Storm and the girls at ringside) and it was by far the best match I had seen out of them in a while because they were given enough time to put something together. Val's problem is that he's been typecast as Val Venis, and his heel turns (RTC, "serious" Val with Trish, Cheif Morley) have been too short lived to mean anything in the long run, because he always goes back to Val. If he can be repackaged and shake the stigma of a stale character, he could move up the ranks in no time.
Guest Goodear Report post Posted May 3, 2004 I really think the gimmick is an excuse at this point for Val not being over. Honestly when was the last time he did anything even remotely porn star-y? Basically he's just been coming out in a towel, doing a Rick Rude impersonation (which is no shame), and then wrestling like a normal person. I won't say that Val can't wrestle well, I'll just say he has a bad habit of doing it in a vacuum where his 'fan friendly' moves really don't play out all that well. You know that 'it' factor people are always talking about? That little extra bit of something that makes a good wrestler great? Val is the best example of a wrestler I have ever seen who doesn't have 'it' to get over and be a main event player.
Dark Age 0 Report post Posted May 3, 2004 But the problem is that every time Val seems to be geting over, he has his legs cut off and then straddled back with the porn star gimmick. How can he prove he has 'it' if they wont let him? He was going along just fine with the Chief Morley gimmick, then suddenly hes back to being Val Venis, jobbing on Heat. Val has proven that if there is any midcarder who should be given another chance to get over, then its him. Hes had 2 good matches with Orton on the B-Show this year and, as already mentioned, he took TEST to a good match. Youre right, at this moment in time he isnt over. But why should he be? What reason do I have to care about Val Venis? Hes not a good guy, or a bad guy, or has a character, or a personality. Hes just some dude who turns up and jobs on Heat every week. Why should I care about him? Now if the WWE gave me a reason to care, then I might. Val's got the look, the mic skills, the in-ring ability, charisma, and he's WWE made. So why isnt he given a chance? Surely if Bradshaw and Bob Holly are given a chance on the upper end of the card, Val should be given one too.
Dandy 0 Report post Posted May 3, 2004 I was digging the hell out of Val's post-pornstar gimmick with the black tights and white boots. When he had Trish as a manager and cut his hair short, I thought the IC title would just be a stepping stone for him to segue into a main eventer. Sadly, he illogically joined the RTC and has since meant jack.
