Obscure Wrestling Matches that were taped

Recommended Posts

Guest Astro

I'm looking into what the WWE may have tucked away in their tape vault.... Interesting matches that were done at TV tapings, but not shown on CHV or TV

WWF @ East Rutherford, NJ - Meadowlands - January 5, 1987

WWF Superstars taping:

WWF World Champion Hulk Hogan & Ricky Steamboat defeated WWF IC Champion Randy Savage & the Honkytonk Man

Add your own, and I'll add more later....

From a Fall of 91 taping

Sid vs The Barbarian (I'm a hoss vs Hoss mark)

Sid vs Jake Roberts (Fueded but no matches I've seen)

---

My vote for oddest match I have in my video collection BTW is Hogan/Kok vs Honky TM/Kamala - Who booked that???!?!?

actually this match was televised. I know for a fact it was on th International Wrestling Challenge programme which aired in several countries such as England and Australia. It may not have aired in the U.S though

Hogan and Bruno Sammartino teamed up once. I don't know who they faced or where it was but I'd like to see it because it would seem so weird.

The MSG Rumble from 1994, because they actually showed brief footage from the Kid/Jannetty vs. Quebecers match on RAW, meaning they must've taped the show.

I have it on handheld anyway, but still it's kinda obscure.

anyone know if Bruno's final match recorded in front of cameras in Houston, TX at the Paul Boesch Retirement Show (the day before the previously mentioned match in Baltimore) aired in the U.S, on Prime Time or something?

It was shown on International Challenge in MAY or JUNE 1988, which was months after Bruno had already left the company which seems quite strange to me

I heard WCW originally taped Starrcade 93, with the Main event of Sid vs Vader, with Sid going over...but after he stabbed Arn and was fired, they had to redo the show live or something, and hotshot Flair-Vader. But I probably heard it wrong, because I haven't heard it anywhere since. Although I do know Sid-Vader was booked to be the Main Event until that incident.

Sounds like bullshit.

I mean, why would they tape Starrcade and then show it on PPV?

I think the part about Flair getting the title becuase of the whole Sid stabbing incident is true though.

I'm not sure if any of them were ever taped, but I'd be sort of interested in seeing one of the Bret Hart vs Nailz matches from the House Shows in October 1992.

Because it is.

Taping WCW's biggest pay-per-view of the year 2 months before it's supposed to air live? Yeah ... okay.

Thought so. I think I read it in Scott Keith's book, "The Buzz on Pro Wrestling", but like I said, I might have heard it wrong. Then again, Scott Keith isn't exactly the master of Wrestling History...

They taped Sid with the belt 2 months ahead of time, not Sid winning the belt

SK gets enough wrong without making things up

I believe they taped the Hart Foundation vs Rockers match, where the Rockers won the Tag Belts, but later decided they wouldn't show it because one of the ring ropes broke or something. They ended up ignoring the whole match happened, just showing Jack Tunney give some lame-ass excuse on local TV stations so people that actually attended the show would understand no Title change took place.

Also, I don't think any of the Ultimate Warrior vs Undertaker Bodybag matches ever aired on TV, did they? They happened a lot on house shows but I never saw one on TV or Coliseum tapes.

Didn't they tape a match of HHH and HBK beating the Road Warriors for the World Tag Titles in '97 because they weren't sure if the LOD would flake out on them and leave with no notice?

I remember reading that somewhere.

Not too sure about the validity of that. I have records of the two teams meeting twice, both at house shows, during LOD's title run. The Raw match took place after they dropped the belts.

Any reason why the WWF didn't wait to have the Headshrinkers drop the World Tag Titles to Diesel & HBK on a RAW match?

Or, better yet, have it either of the two days prior to that match, as I have camcorder copies of those shows.

Not sure exactly when Vince decided to take the straps off the Shrinkers but the Raw taping prior to Summer Slam was held two weeks before the PPV with the next taping not taking place until late September.

I think the decision was made after the initial taping and Vince didn't want to wait another month to crown new champions. Also, with Shawn & Diesel being on Regis the morning of the PPV - it added some unexpected excitement to the build up of the show.

... And you have a handheld footage from that week? ... We need to talk :)

Starrcade wasn't taped, but Saturday Night was.

Flair had teamed with Vicious on Saturday Night, which was taped before the European tour in October*.

A live Clash of Champions aired after the stabbing incident, but before the Saturday Night match. Flair had to announce that he was teaming with Vicious on the Clash.

As for the stabbing, this is what I can remember.

European tours on cramped busses aren't a favorite pastime. Lots of little incidents have happened because tempers become short. Vicious and Anderson might have been needling each other throughout. In the hotel bar about midway through the tour, Sid supposedly started making comments that Anderson's job was secure because it was his best friend doing the booking. Though pushed as Vader's advesary, Vicious felt he was overlooked.

They might have flared up at each other a bit, but nothing happened at the bar.

Later, Vicious pounded on Anderson's door and when Arn opened it, Sid was there and ready to attack. Anderson, only seeing one potential weapon, grabbed a pair of scissors.

It was quite a fight, supposedly pretty loud. 2 Cold Scorpio was the first on the scene to break it up. Anderson took the worst of it with several stab wounds. He was able to get in some licks of his own.

Both were hospitalized and later deported.

Supposedly, WCW was set to do nothing until most of the wrestlers threatened to walk out if Sid wasn't canned. How true that is, I don't know.

*WCW was quite notorious that year for doing that. At one point in 1993, they taped 13 weeks in a few days of tapings.

They dropped the belts, I'm almost positive, the night before SummerSlam. It made little sense to not even tape it and show the finish on the PPV (as they did on the CHV tape of Rumble '92, where they showed Mountie pinning Bret for the IC Title).

They REALLY weren't good shows. Bull Nakano v Alundra, Shrinkers v HBK & Diesel, etc.

Hell, I've got tons of camcorder stuff (including the same crappy quality tape of the Midnights beating Arn & Tully for the tag belts).

-=Mike

...OK, I got one: Who in the heck thought HTM would get over as a face in the WWF?

Which leads me to believe it was a last minute decision or at least it was made so quickly that they couldn't get a cameraman for the show.

From what I recall. Samu didn't want to job the titles to Bigelow & I.R.S @ Summerslam because they weren't a real team, so they just dropped the titles anyway, except a day earlier, and to HBK/Diesel.

Mike Rotundo got screwed damn it~!

Does anyone know what house show the Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart Iron-Man match is from? I know there is a fancam of it around, but if it was a house show at Madison Square Garden or some bigger venue, I'd have to believe WWE taped it.

The fan cam is from Nassau. Doubt the WWF has any footage of it - otherwise I'm sure we would all know of it by now.

the fancam that is around is from Long Island, NY I think. They also had 3 others in Philly, the Meadowlands and in LA. I think Bret Hart & Ric Flair had one in Boston in 93 as well, and there was one in Boston between the Rockers and Rougeaus in 89. I dont think any were taped by the WWF themselves though

I'm pretty sure the reason The Headshrinkers dropped the belts to Micahels and Diesel on such short notcie was because Samu's contract was up soon or he was getting fired or something to that degree, and they didn't think Bigelow and IRS were over enough to hold the belts. Shortly after Summerslam, The Headshrinked returned with The Barbarian replacing Samu.

I remember Vince said on TV that Samu got food poisoning from eating fish.

I shit you not.
