Defense: Rob Blake and Adam Foote (Colorado), Eric Brewer (Edmonton), Scott Niedermayer (New Jersey), Wade Redden (Ottawa), Chris Pronger (Saint Louis), Ed Jovanovski (Vancouver) and Robyn Regehr (Calgary). Goaltenders: Roberto Luongo (Florida), Martin Brodeur (New Jersey) and Ed Belfour (Toronto). ___________________ I can't believe players like Vincent Lecavalier, Rick Nash, Keith Primeau, Paul Kariya and Jose Theodore were left off the team. The World Cup starts on August 29 and the USA is the defending champion.
CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted May 16, 2004 Kariya had a crappy year and may still be injured. I like the other two Tampa players they picked over Lecavalier. Nash is too young, and wouldn't really be a good fit on the fourth line. Primeau's getting old, and had a horrible (albeit injury-plagued) season. (So did Lemieux, but Lemieux is a proven winner and a great guy to have in the dressing room.) And I wouldn't take Theodore over any of the three goalies that were picked. All in all, I'm pretty happy with the team as is.
the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted May 16, 2004 I don't think Primeau is the type of player for a tourney like this. He is built on toughness and leadership. My experience with tournaments like this is limited, but the toughness issue doesn't seem to be a priority. And as great of a leader as he is this year, when you have Sakic, Yzerman, and Lemieux on your team, I don't think players would be looking at Primes for the leadership. Spaceman Spiff 0 Report post Posted May 16, 2004 Will Stevie Y be ready by the time the tourney starts? That was a pretty brutal eye injury he sustained, so it might be cutting it close as to whether he'll be ready. Hitchcock was saying in the Philly papers that Primeau may be the 1st alternative should anyone not be able to play because of injuries.
nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted May 17, 2004 Does anyone know when the other teams are expected to be announced? It's not surprising that the Canadians were announced first, but I'm hoping it's not too long until the US and international teams are announced. And I've heard the quote from Gretzky that the Canadians have enough talent to field 2 really good teams ... how sweet would it be if they were really allowed to enter two teams into the tournament? Maybe Eastern & Western Canada, or something like that.

LaParkaMarka 0 Report post Posted May 17, 2004 The only problem with Sweden is goaltending. If they just had a goaltender along the lines of Brodeur or Luongo, I would pick em to win. As it is, Canada has a huge edge in goaltending. I'm not sure about having both Kris Draper and Kirk Maltby. I'm sure they'll work very well together on a checking line, but still...gotta think Vinny Lecavalier should be on the team somewhere.

The World Cup starts on August 29 and the USA is the defending champion. I'm glad you didn't mention Bertuzzi, like a lot of the media has been talking about. He's a great player, obviously, but allowing him to play in this tourney would lessen the impact of his NHL suspension. Hitchcock was saying in the Philly papers that Primeau may be the 1st alternative should anyone not be able to play because of injuries. Hitchcock is saying that because he happens to be an assistant coach on Team Canada, and Philly is still in the playoffs. If Philly gets knocked out, then maybe you'll hear more about it... Should be some really good hockey being played.
Red Baron 0 Report post Posted May 17, 2004 Is there anyway Canada can have 2 teams in this tourney. Its not like they don't have enough depth to go far.

They are all decent goalies but nothing special like we have offensive like Sundin, Forsberg and Näslund. My pick to win is Canada they seem to have the best team on paper, if they can only play as a team they should do extremly well.
Red Baron 0 Report post Posted May 17, 2004 Canada will win this tournament, but without some stiff competition against, USA, Russia, Czech Republic. The surprise team this year, and possibly a medal team is Slovakia. I think Slovakia's defence is pretty good compaired to teams like Sweden and Finland, and would go very far. This would be the last tournament until we see countries like Latvia, Belarus, Switzerland and Austria become some big threats, especially Switzerland with the good goaltending of Aebischer this past year. Guest CurryMan Report post Posted May 17, 2004 Gah don´t say Belarus out loud I have still nightmares from the Olympics in 2002 when we lost the quarterfinal against them after Tommy Salo in the goal tried to use the head in someway to save a puck that was struck from the blueline :-( Defence is probebly more important in these tournaments then the skills of forwards, you can see it in NHL now lately. The teams with the best goalie and defence is often the team that is most succesfull.
