Guest Anglesault Report post Posted May 19, 2004 Now, I know we haven't had good umps in God knows when, but good lord, are they horrid this year or what? In that Mariner/Yankee game, not only does the home plate ump start a fight with Dan Wilson, but he just brutally blows a call at home in the 12th and ends up costing the Yanks the game. And now, tonight, the 1st base Ump makes one of the worst calls at that particular base that I've seen in a while, calling Bernie Williams out despite having about half his body across first by the time the ball came in. In almost every game I've seen this year (for any team) I've seen a "WTF" call. Can something be done about this? Does Selig have power over umps?

Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted May 19, 2004 There were some pretty questionable calls from the umps during the second Cubs/Reds series this season. They threw the Reds manager out for no reason and there were was an obvious ball that got turned into a strike a few times.
Vern Gagne 0 Report post Posted May 19, 2004 The home plate umpire blew the game for the Twins against Seattle. First Koskie was safe in the 9th.Than Winn was out at home in the 16th. Than that Friday. The home plate umpire had a strike zone the size of a dime. It was bad for both Oakland and Minnesota.
Guest Man Of 1,004 Modes Report post Posted May 19, 2004 I can't be the only one. I gotta agree, A-Rod was so safe I almost through my TV out the window. But don't forget, an umpire did the same thing in Seattle, costing the Mariners a run against the Yanks when a player slid in to home, wasn't touched on the tag but was called out anyway. The Ghost of bps21 0 Report post Posted May 19, 2004 Well...Posada just got that lost baserunner back...so I wouldn't complain too bad. Perhaps next time the pitcher should just roll the ball to his feet and let him take his base.
NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted May 19, 2004 shit, two out of the four first round exits by the A's can almost soley be attributed to shitty umpiring calls(even though the A's choked and couldn't win the 5th games) First that amazing relay by Jeter to get out Jeremy Giambi. When you watch the replay he was clearly safe, but it was sort of Jeremy's fault for not sliding causing the play to look a lot closer. Then last year, when the 3rd base umpire awarded Tejada Home plate, and then changes his mind later cause Tejada didn't jog to home plate to his liking. Guest Anglesault Report post Posted May 19, 2004 Bernie-Clearly safe at first. Posada-Clearly safe at home, at home, winning run. The Yankees might lose this game, but the Angels sure as fuck won't have won it.
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted May 19, 2004 Umps cost the Yanks another game.
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted May 20, 2004 That replay pisses me off. If that Ump was in position, and not hiding behind a catcher with a garbage truck like build, maybe he'd be useful.
Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Report post Posted May 20, 2004 That's baseball. Sometimes the bullshit runs your team's way, and sometimes it doesn't. Either way, in the long run the cream rises to the top.
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted May 20, 2004 If Umpires continue to refuse to allow the Yankees to score, they're gonna have a damned hard time rising to anything. And an umpire crew blowing no less that three easy calls in one game is not baseball. It's bullshit.

Guest Anglesault Report post Posted May 20, 2004 With what? The umpires this year are worse than they've been in years, and they've been costing teams games with their ineptitude. Something needs to be done.
KingPK 0 Report post Posted May 20, 2004 Is this another Yankee bitching thread disguised as an umpire bitching thread? Umpires are not perfect, infallable beings. They blew some calls in the 1999 ALCS also (remember that AS)?
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted May 20, 2004 Is this another Yankee bitching thread disguised as an umpire bitching thread? If this was a Yankee bitching thread, you'd know it. Umpires are not perfect, infallable beings. THREE FUCKING CALLS IN ONE GAME. And tonight, they walk Clark on strike three and K Cairo on a ball.
Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted May 20, 2004 Until AngleSault cites examples that didn't fall in line with another team its a Yankees bitching thread in disguise. This time he'll blame the umps rather than his team's performance though. I stated earlier in the year the umpiring was horrible when they called Melvin Mora out at the plate in that one game against Boston. Damon threw the ball from short Center to Varitek, Varitek caught it high and almost clotheslined Mora with the tag, but Mora had his foot in before yet was still called out. Later on the homeplate umpire made up for his mistake by not calling a single strike against the Orioles. The Red Sox ultimately lost, but what pissed me off was they should have lost 2 or 3 innings prior to that and saved some of their bullpen. Then there was that fiasco of a Cubs/Reds series where Baker was tossed because an Umpire didn't modify his player card, thus claiming the Cubs hit out of order. Kerry Wood was tossed because pitches right down the middle weren't strikes on that (I believe)Saturday afternoon. Then the next day both managers were tossed for disagreeing with the Umps. Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted May 20, 2004 The shitty calls really went both ways that series. The umps had a horrible strike zone as Casey got struck out in the first game on a pitch that was a good 6 inches out of the strike zone. Dusty getting tossed though I think was fair. He needs to take extra care to make sure his player substitutions are known. Though he deserved to get tossed from game 3 of that series for his whining that Freel was tagged out on a SB attempt when no one's glove was near him. Guest Anglesault Report post Posted May 20, 2004 (edited) Ump was squeezing Moyer, Moyer and Melvin start arguing, Melvin gets tossed and the ump walks over to Wilson and starts screaming. Edited May 20, 2004 by Anglesault

Guest Anglesault Report post Posted May 20, 2004 (edited) Replay says that Bernie was indeed safe (he hit forarm, not glove) but awful placement for the homeplate ump again. Anaheim could be annoyed, because if he was on the other side, he might have seen it differently. He was still safe, but close call. Edit: Second replay says he might have nicked the glove with his knee. Edited May 20, 2004 by Anglesault
NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted May 20, 2004 one thing I never understood is why Umpires are allowed to interpret their own strikezone. If the rulebook clearly states what the strikezone is, then that is what it is PERIOD. None of this, "well I like these types of strikes blah blah blah" Either the umpire calls the strikezone according to the rules or they get a new job, PERIOD.
Guest Brian Report post Posted May 20, 2004 Well, you have to judge how much of the strike zone the ball gets. Does it get the black of the plate? If it brushes the letters, do you let it go? With two strikes, should the player be protecting more? As much as I complain about umps, I'd never go for instant replay or that other bullshit. The human element is part of what makes this game. Guest Anglesault Report post Posted May 20, 2004 The human element is part of what makes this game. The "human element" isn't so important that you let them lose games for any team, let alone contenders.

Guest Anglesault Report post Posted May 22, 2004 Two strange calls on double plays. Nothing blatantly bad, but we had basically the same situation in consecutive half innings, and both calls went to Texas.
