1999 & 2000 WCW PPVs watched by newbies...

So I picked up a few WCW pay-per-view events from 1999 that I thought my friends might like to look at. We just stayed in tonight, drank a lot of beer and checked out some "classic" (or infamous...?) shows.

 

A "new" marks perspective...

 

*WCW Mayhem '99

 

-Jarrett/Benoit was well received. They enjoyed it, tremendously.

-Karagias/Disco, WAY too long and HATED.

-Smiley/Knobs was decently-received, Norman was found funny. Brawing in the back was kind of boring.

-Revolution/Filthy Animals elim. match - Popped for Eddie G's work and Torrie's body. Slower match than expected. Anticlimatic ending.

-Hennig/Bagwell - Fast forward.

-Sting/Bret - Enjoyed it, knew Bret was winning, so-so.

-Berlyn/Vampiro - Fast forward.

-Package/Meng - Fast forward.

-Hall/Booker - Bathroom / Fast forward.

-David Flair / Kimberly. Thought Flair looked ridiculous/out of place, Kim's hot, yawn.

-Sid/Goldberg - They hate Goldberg. They hate Sid. Didn't care.

-Bret/Benoit - Too many run-ins. Decent...nothing too good.

 

Pretty much, Match of the Night went to Jarrett and Benoit.

 

*WCW Spring Stampede 2000

 

-They dug the overall concept of "Young Vs. Old". Too bad the "Old" wrestlers were the faces and suck. Or did they? We'll see.

 

-Flair & Lex over Mamalukes & Harris Boys. Didn't care. Why's Flair dressed like a golfer?

-Mancow over Hart. One of wannabe Stern's "girls" tripped on way to ring. Who is "Hale"? Kidman sucks.

-Sting over Booker. GOOD MATCH. Woke us up.

-Steiner over Wall. Zzzz.....

-Awesome over Bigelow/Cat. They liked Awesome. Predicted he would win the U.S. Title.

-Vampiro over Kidman. Zzz....Hogan pops crowd.

-Sting over Vampiro. Sting no-dols Vampiro's crappy shots and delivered a crappy match.

-Steiner over Awesome. Didn't suck. Pretty short.

-Funk Vs. Smiley - Eh...fast forward.

-Candido wins 6-way. I hyped Tammy Sytch's awful appearence. However...she looked GOOD. Memory must be jaded. She didn't SPEAK, however, which may have saved her appeal.

-Buff and Shane over Flair and Lex. No one cares.

-US Title Finals...Everyone is sleeping.

-DDP and Jarrett. I fell asleep, too.

 

Just some random thoughts on a couple crappy WCW shows viewed for the first time by "WCW newbies" on my advice of "Get Drunk, You'll Need It."

 

Still, gotta love both HAVOC and STAMPEDE, the two respective "relaunch!" PPVs of Russo and CRASH~! TV.

Mayhem was a good pay-per-view from what memory reminds me.

 

The only match I remember from Spring Stampede is the one you labled as a good match. Sting vs Booker T.

Once R & B (Russo & Bischoff) returned, Flair started wrestling in street clothes due to his sagging chest (Say what you will about Flair's chest, but he's in good shape for somebody his age). It wasn't until he won the WCW Title from Jarrett that he began wearing his tights again.

 

Mayhem was a helluva lot better than Survivor Series '99. Then again, SS '99 ranks up there with GAB '91 & KOTR '95 as one of the worst PPVs of all-time.

Mayhem 99 was alright, can't really call it 'good' since the middle part of the PPV was very long and boring, which brought the whole thing down. You have to be sucking something fierce like Hennig/Bagwell to get a Canadian crowd to chant 'boring'. The apathy during Berlyn/VampYro and Luger/Meng (Luger screaming "HELP!" was amusing though) was apparent too.

 

The run-ins in all three title tourney matches were so unnecessary (and stupid and annoying) too, but that's Russo for ya. It sent the message that the talent involved couldn't be trusted to put on a straight wrestling match

What was wrong with SS 99? I rented it a while back and thought it was pretty good. Not as good as Summerslam 99 though, which I rented at the same time.

 

RR 2000 owns both of them though, if only for the HHH/CJ street fight.

Looking back on the WCW pay-per-views it's easier to see the confusion that filled WCW than it was when i was younger. Even the wrestlers sometimes seemed lazy and not knowing what was supposed to go down that night. Mainly 1998-late 99

I felt disappoint with the show. I didn't have access to the internet back then, so I was pissed the ME was changed. It would of been fine as a Raw or SD but for a PPV, no way. Maybe ranking it up there with GAB & KOTR is a little too harsh, but most of 1999's PPVs sucked so it's understandable why somebody who be pissed off about anything during that period (and I liked WWF 1999 outside of KOTR and Survivor Series). Man of 1004 Modes is right, SS 2000 is a lot worse than '99.

Have your friends check out Spring Stampede '99, that is still one of my most favorite all-around PPVs from any promotion.

Yeah, I have that already. Although they've watched Blitz/Juvy and the Horsemen/Flock on my computer already. I thought Kidman/Rey sucked and the main event was iffy.

Rey Mysterio was knocked loopy early in the match, so you can't blame them for not going for more high-flying stuff. Their match from Monday Nitro a few weeks before Spring Stampede was really good.
