Actor Evaluation: Johny Depp

Recommended Posts

I thought it would be cool if we did actor evaluation, just to see what do you guys think of actors. The three criteria that the Actor will be judged on is Performance, Variety and his/her ability to be Believeable (Unbelieveable). The first victim of Actor Evaluation will be Johhny Depp.

Performance /10

When evaluating the actor in the following criteria consider aspects such as: Is this actor's perfromances in most of their movies Good? Poor? or Great? Does the Actor's performance skills show in the characters they play? Does this actor seem confident in the way he acts? Or does his acting show that he is un-confident in the character that he is portraying?

Variety /10

When evaluating the actor in the following criteria consider aspects such as: Does this Actor stick to the one type of movie Genre? Does this actor play similiar types of characters in all the movies he has made? Does this actor portray different types of Characters in all the movies he has made? Should this actor add more variety to his acting (E.G. Play different types characters in upcoming movies, instead of the same type of characters over and over again)?

Believeable /10

When evaluating the actor in the following criteria consider aspects such as: Does this actor portrayal of his characters believeable? Does this actor seem to be unbelieveable in most characters that he portrays? In this actor's portrayal of his characters does he often come off as bland and one-dimensional?

Total /30

I'll post my thoughts later... so start evaluating Johnny Depp

I think he's a rather good actor who intentionally chooses exceptionally "weird" roles to protect himself against the fact that a lot of his movies bomb. He is quite a good actor --- slightly beneath Ed Norton, in my book.

Notice that no one is using the point scale. I've said that Depp is the greatest living American actor under the age of 50 several times. I would probably give him a 28/30 in your criteria. Deducting two points for variety. While he has played a wide variety of parts, most can be tossed under the 'weird' category and he always comes off the same, but that's key into establishing a solid screen persona that people like and relate too. When was the last time Jack Nicholson or Paul Newman really broke from star text?
