OK, just to spark a little discussion, I'll ask this:

 

What good is the Federal Election Commission?

 

Honestly, are they even needed?

 

Consider a hypothetical (and, yes, this is an actual hypothetical, not a veiled attack on Clinton's '96 campaign):

 

Let's say a candidate violates every election law we have and wins an election. What can the FEC do about it? I have little reason to expect them to OVERRIDE the election result. They won't be able to easily press criminal charges. Fines are immaterial, honestly.

 

So, what does the FEC do that, say, opposition campaigns couldn't do better?
