Violet is Purple with a little more red in it than usual.

That's Magenta. Purple and Violet are the same thing.

This thread has reminded me of a pet peeve of mine and that is people saying that primary colours are red, yellow and blue!!! It frustrates me beyond reason.

I hope you don't try to paint using the principle that green is a primary color, or you'll get some crappy yellow. And by crappy I mean brown.

 

With light, the primaries are your RGB, and all of them together make white.

With paint, it's red YELLOW and blue, and all the colors make black.

Why would I? I'm the one saying green isn't a primary color.

In photography and printing, the principal hues are Yellow, Magenta, and Cyan. I have no idea why I just capitalized those.

 

Anyway, someone tried to pull that "look at this indigo object" on me once. Problem was that the object in question (some old vase) was COBALT. We went to the library, I found a book on colors, then hit him with it. The moral is, don't fuck with color names unless you know your shit, because I will hit you with a book.
