In honor of Memorial Day, and because I couldn't find a similar thread, I wanted to create a thread for those of us who served/are serving/are planning to serve in the US military. Start off with what branch you are in (or are interested in) and a few details.

I took Navy ROTC in college and was an O-1 (a Navy Ensign equivalent to a Second Lieutenant) in the Defense Intelligence Agency doing translation for a year before a car accident forced me to get out way earlier than I planned. I still have lots of friends in all four branches and I have a brother-in-law who is a combat engineer in the Marines. Besides for going to NMITC and serving in the DIA I was never stationed outside the States.

My gramps died on Saturday. WWII, worst years of his life.

My uncle was part of the screaming eagles during Vietnam.

Both my grandfathers (now deceased) were Captains in the US Army during WWII. My maternal grandfather was stateside the entire time, but my paternal grandfather was in Europe, fighting against the Axis powers in the front lines. My dad still has a lot of Nazi memorabilia that my grandfather captured during the War, including some really cool knives.

My dad was Army. My step-father served in Korea in the Air Force. I was Army JROTC in high school for a time, and one of my good friends is finishing Marine training and leaving for Iraq at the end of June.

I've contemplated going into the Chaplaincy at some point in the future, probably through the Navy since that would let me minister to the Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard.

My best friend is stationed in Okinowa right now. He is coming back home for some long overdue leave in July. I haven't seen him in 3 years.

My grandpa (deceased) was in the Pacific in WWII, and I have a couple uncles on the other side of the family who were marines.

I had an uncle who bombed Rommel. Some Time magazine guy was in his plane and they did a story.

He died after the war landing a prototype bomber after the brass bailed. Fused to the steering wheel.

Hell of a way to go.
