Should the gay gimmick be ridiculed

According to the Wrestlecrap book, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) supported the angle, going so far as to give Billy and Chuck a wedding gift.

Right, but the "community" positions don't always agree with everybody. I don't know if GLAAD wasn't watching the show until the marriage stuff came up, and just didn't see the earlier stuff with the skits and whatnot, or if they just figured that publicity is publicity.

You know, most people in this country DO regard homosexuality as "wrong" or disgusting. McMahon is doing nothing more than capitalizing on people's anxieties and distrust.

Sure they do. Benoit has hugged men on three separate occasions that I can think of: EDDY~! at WMXX, Edge after they won the tag belts, and Eugene on this past RAW. I'm sure there's countless others.

Angle, constantly. :D

They don't overwhelmingly approve of marriage, but they don't all think they're immoral and disgusting either. A Newseek poll found that while only 28% of Americans support gay marriage (and remember, there's a lot of people who don't who still don't think gay people are evil), in the 18-29 crowd that number is 41%.

Consider that Vince's target group is pretty much that age range, and it makes sense that perhaps ridiculous gay characters might turn off a good chunk of the kind of people whose money he wants.

I loved Goldust's character because it was never openly homosexual. The whole premise of the gimmick was a man who constantly played mindgames with his opponent, making them paranoid, fearing his next move.

Billy, Chuck and now Rico are totally different. They were/are "gay" and proud of it. Almost every move in Rico's offence is in reference to his "gay" gimmick. The reactions from his opponents are homophobic responses. There is no doubt, no duplicity about the sexual orientation of Rico's character.

The difference? Goldust was unnerving, even scary. Rico's whole arsenal is a cheap pop machine.

They need to have Rico become more like the Goldust character. Have the commentators play up how talented this guy is in the ring and have him get in the guys head more before the match and then when Rico does something "gay" that gets the guy off guard or whatever, Rico can use the opening and beat the guy

Rico's opponents' reactions are not homophobic. They're simply angry at being fondled by a gay man without their permission. It'd be no different if a man did the same things to a girl and you called the girl's reaction "sexist".

I had often wondered...what with the tons of oiled up, tattoed, pierced, uber-manly but ultimately bland wrestlers WWE has been producing, would it kill them to make a gay wrestler that actually is a tough bad ass?

Come on, Vince; make it happen!

...you make a good case. Although that was never a part of his character, and he's hit on Sable recently and hung around with Trish and seemed to get a kick out of groping Stephanie.

Of course, there's the X-Factor phase of his career.

I believe Albert would be a great example of what the homosexual community calls a "bear."

If my memory serves me correctly I believe he also hugged Jericho when they won the tag titles.
