Do you even watch his matches? Typically, the fans are into it constantly, throughout the course of the match, not just at the end when Benoit hits the finish. And, no, fans don't pop for any finisher.

I think we're still going back to the reactions people got during the "boom" of the late 90's. The God-like reactions Austin or the Rock got every time they came out as champ are gone... people just aren't into the product as much now as they were then. Yeah, Benoit doesn't get a monster pop, but nobody would be getting that monster pop right now on a constant basis. He got a decent pop when he came out, and he keeps the crowd into it. The fact is, until the product experiences another boom, every champion's gonna get the same, semi-decent reaction when they come out.

But is he a better draw? Doubtful.

 

Being over doesn't necessarily mean that people will pay to see you. There were several over champs in WWF history that ended up drawing squat (Warrior, Diesel, Michaels). Benoit is better than all of them. Nobody is confusing Benoit with Rock or Austin, but on RAW, only HHH has a better history than he does and quite frankly the audience demanded a break from him. Benoit is the only choice right now. Jericho had his shot and through bad booking or whatever, it didn't work. Shawn has had several shots and blown it every time. Kane's a heel. Eugene is over in the same way Rikishi was over in 2000. The character has a short shelf life. Benoit is the best option with the strongest fanbase.

Gimmicks like that have a pretty short shelf life. Why do you think their pushing him to the moon now?

 

You think in about a year Eugene will still be getting a lot of airtime and working main events? Probably not.

 

He's just a novelty act- like Rikishi and 2 Cool in 2000 and Hogan in 2002 and the cripple in 2003.

 

 

They've been prepping Benoit for the title since October. Benoit became main event over when he finally proved he wasn't a choke artist and won the RR and at Wrestlemania.

Benoit is still over- I heard him get pops tonight for his work and the crowd was digging him at Bad Blood. People seem to like the guy as champ.

 

Who would you give the belt to? HHH doesn't need it back and he's the only over heel I could think of. Orton and Batista are nowhere near ready, Kane is a joke, HBK is a choke artist and I just don't see Edge or Y2J doing anything better.

Look at the ratings. The weeks when Benoit is in the main event or a high-profile match have a strong tendency to be higher than those where he isn't, including the heavily hyped super-RAW featuring Jericho/Christian and Eugene's first match.

HBK: Maybe (not a choke artist, seems to enjoy being a non-champ)

Batista: No (Are you kidding, this guy's been a suckbag before this past month)

Kane: No (He is a joke)

Plus, Shawn has never shown an ability to draw so why would anyone think that could change now? He also isn't any more over than Benoit right at the moment. He had a pretty mild reaction at Badd Blood to say the least. HHH is more over than he is.

 

Jericho is too damaged right now. If you start now, you could get him up there by Survivor Series time probably.

 

HHH is the alternative and make no mistake, he will be the one to take the title. But the audience needs a breather. If HHH wins all the time, nobody will pay to watch it because they won't think the opponent stands a chance. He is a good champ, but he can't be champ all the time.

 

Edge's return is flopping badly, so he's gone.

 

That leaves Shelton Benjamin as the only other option. But first you have to remember he was still in a tag team when Benoit won the belt, and that he's basically a lesser version of Benoit at this point in terms of character. If you have a choice of two similar wrestlers, at least pick the better one.

Amen. Raw's been much better with Benoit as champ. Even HHH has looked better without the belt. And for the record I think the gimmick suits Benoit just fine. No flashy crap, the straight, clear cut wrestling. Benoit's the true "tough guy."

 

Edit: And Eugene as champ? That would go over great... until you realised a guy who's been in the company 3 months as a comedy act playing a mentally handicap guy is the World Champion. Eugene's good for a cheap pop and a 3 minute match, but if his match with Kane is any indication, he still needs work.

I'm not gonna disagree with your choices - Jericho and Hunter are the only other options on that program. I do however disagree with writing Benoit off. I'm sure you can agree that the build-up to his match with Kane was pathetic - Kane spent more time with f'n Lita than setting up the match.

I think they should set up a match for Vengeance (Benoit vs either Kane/HHH/Y2J/Edge) and promote the shit out of it. Put on some decent looking under card matches. If the PPV still bombs, then take the belt off him at SummerSlam.
