nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2004 smh, there's not a place in the world that I could move and not be a Bruins fan. I can kind of understand rooting for the local team at least a little bit (hell, I only lived in Colorado for 5 years, and moved back east 6 years ago but still root for the Rockies & Nuggets ... not the Broncos or Avs, though, I'd rather root for colon cancer than either of those teams) but to completely disavow the allegiance to a team that I had for my entire life? Uh-uh, not happening. Living away from home is the reason that they created the Center Ice cable-package.
starvenger 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2004 My opinion on this is gonna ruffle some feathers around here, personally if you move from say Boston or New York to Tampa or Phoenix and you plan to stay there for an exteneded period of time you should become a fan of your new hometown. You will always have your memories from your previous hometown, but if you chose to live down south or out west whats the point of rooting for the Bruins. My rule of thumb is this: it's OK to root for (even LIKE) the local teams UNLESS YOUR team comes into town to play. Thus, when I was in Detroit (actually, Windsor), I cheered for the Red Wings, but still followed the Leafs (since they were on TSN and CBC). I should note that the Pistons, Lions and Tigers all sucked at the time (this was when JYD was on the team), so it was a bit painful to try and get into their games. Now that I'm in Houston, I DO follow the Texans and Rockets as much as possible. Same principle applies for the Rockets though - if the Raptors are in town, you bet I'm wearing my Raptors hockey jersey and hoping that Vince doesn't injure himself walking or something. Red Baron 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2004 Even for me, geographically speaking, I should be either cheering for Toronto or Buffalo (QEW Wars for hockey). Moving while at a young age to a city where you haven't had a favourite team, to a team that is a bit successful, historic value, whatever, that builds up the fan base. Some fans will probably change from teams if they have moved to a certain city, but many of them were raised, or chose to like their team, grew up with the team, will be hard to disown the team that they like. Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted June 17, 2004 Why put sports teams in retirement home cities like Phoenix and Miami? Are you fucking KIDDING ME?! There's no retired people in Miami. You're thinking of the rest of Florida. Miami is an anamoly, they really shouldn't be thrown in with the rest of the Florida stereotypes since this city is completely different from the rest of the state. This is a purely Latin-flavored town, with Miami Beach being the most contemporary "hip" spot there is in the country. And not to mention that Dolphins fans here are totally rabid. People don't care much for the Panthers, since that's in Broward County (think Anaheim to Los Angeles and you kinda get the picture) and well it's hockey and it never gets cold here, so yeah. On top of it all, not to make it a racial issue or anything, but I see mostly only white people getting into hockey moreso than others, and there's really not many whites here so it was not a good idea to put a hockey team there. In other words, the demographic doesn't exist for the team. But the majority here are big Marlins and Dolphins fans, with the Heat just starting to get some good support. I go to school right across the street from American Airlines Arena, and everyday while the Heat were in the playoffs, I'd be seeing people walking around in Heat jerseys all day. Yet, a lot of it has to do with, like you said, marketing a cold weather sport where it doesn't...get cold.

The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted June 18, 2004 San Diego hadn't had a whole lot to get excited about...the Padres being a B+ team will hopefully give the area a jump-start.
