Fantasy Football for Dopes

Recommended Posts

Guest Joe_G

With football season a few months away I tempted to create a roto league at work. I've never done one of these before and can't really find a good guide online. So some questions:

1. How many participants are needed for a good league?

2. What's a good setup? I want to keep things simple, so I figure everyone would start a quarterback, running back, two receivers, a kicker, and a defense.

3. How does scoring work? Would a fantasy player get 1 point for every running yard, ten points for a touchdown, etc.? What about the defense?

Any help is mucho appreciated.

Starters: QB, 2 RBs, 2 WRs, 1 TE, 1 kicker, and 1 defense. I normally recommend each team have 12 players, which allows each team to have a backup at most positions (an extra QB, RB, WR and D would normally be sufficient.)

# of teams: I'd recommend having no fewer than 8 teams, and no more than 12. Too few teams makes it so every team is a powerhouse, and it's all superstars. Too many teams, and all of a sudden people have Kordell Stewart as their #2 QB.

Points: go to the Yahoo leagues, or one of the other free ones, and steal their point systems. No reason to reinvent the wheel, as they say.

The mag I use is Fantasy League Football (with Peyton Manning on the cover), and it's got info for various types of scoring leagues, plus schedules and such. If you're into the "do it yourself" thing, take a look there. You'll need a couple of ff mags anyways.

BTW, I'm just curious, but how many people have already started researching for this coming FF season?

I don't think I ever stopped reading FF columns. They're pretty sporadic in the offseason, but that's expected. I've been checking out ESPN drafts too...if I'm bored, I'll head over to their draft monitor and see how random drafts are going. Some weird stuff happening there...I saw Chad Pennington go in the 7th round, guys like Dominick Davis go in the 6th, etc. It's kinda interesting.

It's still pretty early for me to think about FF, since I'm still embroiled in a fantasy baseball war. I usually start really looking into things around the beginning of training camp.

The fantasy mags are starting to come out for this year, so I'll probably be picking one or two up over the next few weeks or so.

Oh, and I also think 12 teams is perfect for a league. Having 20 is overkill, and there's a greater chance of people quitting when they aren't doing well. With 8-12, everyone gets good talent and at least can stay in the game.

8 is fine for most leagues, since even the most casual players will have an excellent roster. I find it's a little boring when everyone has superstar teams though.

I liked 20, but it was annoying when teams just didn't show up. 12-16 would probably be best, with a preference towards 16. Anyone up for a 16-team yahoo league this year?

This is true, but you gotta FIND those motivated people. You can always find people who are all gung ho at the beginning but then disappear to Parts Unknown. Dead Money is Dead Money, but it's not as fun when you can't do trades because a FF Owner went AWOL...

1) The standard is 10 teams. You can certainly get away with 12 though. Less than 10 and you lose a lot of the strategy involved because every team can get great players. More than 12 and the talent pool becomes too thin.

2) 1 QB, 2 RBs, 3 WRs, 1 TE, 1 DEF, 1 K

3) This can get complicated. I suggest checking out magazines for various scoring systems. One thing I do recommend though is punishing players for turnovers (-2 pts per interception or lost fumble). I don't think Bulger should be fantasy player of the week just because he throws for 400 yards in the Rams offense, when he also throws 5 interceptions.
