Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted June 19, 2004 I don't recall complaining about him not talking to the media. He has nothing of importance to say. Let him eat his bowl of Roid-Es every morning and waddle out to LF and the batter's box. I don't want to listen to him at all.
A Happy Medium 0 Report post Posted June 19, 2004 Maybe he has some advanced torrets (sp?) but instead of it coming out in shambles of sentences, it comes out in vicious, paranoid, and sometimes racist rants. I dunno. Has Barry Bonds ever had an interview where he comes off...humble and friendly?

He's so banging her.
Brett Favre 0 Report post Posted June 19, 2004 If anything, the white guys are the ones getting the most heat this year (Nomar as the big example). Isn't Nomar mexican? Atleast his parents are, I think. But that white guy Grady Little did get huge heat last year, so there.
ant_7000 0 Report post Posted June 20, 2004 Didn't Carl Everett said similar things about the Red Sox organization being racist? Bonds might've been talking to Carl. Sports writers seem to be reaching for anything these days to get a story.
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted June 20, 2004 Didn't Carl Everett said similar things about the Red Sox organization being racist? Bonds might've been talking to Carl. Why yes, I'd base... well, anything I say on a conversation with Carl Everett. Sports writers seem to be reaching for anything these days to get a story. I don't really think so. Dusty Baker and Shaq's quasi-racist statements kind of slip through the cracks because Dusty may be insane and Shaq is borderline illiterate with what appears to be a third grade level of comprehension. But when someone who at least appears to be somewhat mentally stable says something accusing an entire city of being racist, it's news.
NYU 0 Report post Posted June 20, 2004 Maybe he has some advanced torrets (sp?) but instead of it coming out in shambles of sentences, it comes out in vicious, paranoid, and sometimes racist rants. I dunno. Cherry-picked quotes is more like it. So, in actuality, the interview went something like: REPORTER: So, Mr. Bonds, what do you think of the city of Boston? BONDS: I would never say Boston is too racist for me. I couldn't play there without absolutely loving the city. REPORTER: Fair enough. It's pretty well known that the fine people of Boston appreciate good players. Do you think you could handle the constant fan admiration that goes along with being a professional baseball in Boston? BONDS: Man, I don't think I could handle all the love and passion that's present in Boston. The people of Boston are just great, and always have been, but I don't think it's my kind of city. The media scrutiny, as much as I love everything about the media, might be a little too much. I'm listening to only what guys have said, but that's been going on ever since my dad [bobby] was playing baseball. I can't play like that. That's not for me, brother. REPORTER: Last question. Finally, Mr. Bonds, there are some people that accuse Boston of being a racist city. While the Ku Klux Klan have never even been close to being a predominant force in this city, do you worry that you could face any trouble? Burning courses or something of the sort? BONDS: Absolutely not. Bostoners are among some of the kindest people I've ever met. They treat everybody with the absolute utmost respect. I'm black. They don't build stuff for blacks. I don't think I'd see any burning crosses or anything like that if I ever moved to Boston. The people just have too much respect for themselves. REPORTER: Thank you, Mr. Bonds, for your time today. You will be fairly represented in tomorrow's paper. We promise. Now.....if the interview went like that.....you may have a point. But realistically, we both know that none of his quotes were taken out of context. In fact, I don't understand how any of his quotes in this article can even be cherry-picked. In what context are those quotes acceptable? In what context are those quotes even factually correct for 2004? Sometimes, just sometimes, the media isn't to blame for an athlete's absurd comments. Not cherry-picked from the interview, but picked out in general. Many of us say stupid things, but none of us have them broadcast over the waves. When Bonds says ANYTHING remotely offensive, its splashed all over page one. All I've read from that interview is resentment, and considering the hatred he gets from some groups, it might be justified. I don't know what Bonds has experienced. But some people have based their judgement on Bonds entirely based on negative columns from sportswriters. I don't think that's an accurate picture of the man. The fact is, we don't know what athletes are really like.
HarleyQuinn 0 Report post Posted June 21, 2004 Well when he's basing his assumptions on Boston being a racist city on a bunch of hearsay, whilst not even playing here once in his career then I think the negativity is justified(this time).
