Nostalgia Trip: The Goonies II (NES)

Yes, I got the sub-header from those NBA commercials after the lockdown ended.

Once again, another trip to a game I actually enjoyed quite a bit. According to the obvious video game site (GameFAQs.com), the game was released in March of 1987. For those who don't know, this is a somewhat sequel to the movie released in 1985 about a bunch of reject kids who "accidentally" go on a treasure hunt to save their homes from becoming a golf course. Also, no, there was no sequel to the movie, if you're wondering why there is a "2" instead of a 1 and 2. There was an original release...in Japan, but for reasons unknown to me, it never hit the states.

Anyway, in this game, we find out the big bag Fratelli Family has broken out of prison and kidnapped all of the Goonies....and a MERMAID, except for Mikey. Equipped with cheap-ass sneakers and a yo-yo to overcome the evil Italians, snakes, and bats, you must wonder through the family's mansion which consists of a jungle, Antarctic, and other weird zones.

To find a Goonie, you must first obtain some keys to free them from the sells. Sadly though, all the male Goonies look a like, as well as the two females, so no hilarious Chunk here. Plus, oddly enough, Sloth is missing. The game appears to be quite difficult, mainly because your lack of power and a POOR EXCUSE FOR A MAP. When entering rooms to get clues, it's also a real hassle to have to knock on the walls with your fist or hammer to get stuff, but you can beat up on people.

I'm still confused though on HOW a mermaid is in this. It just doesn't make much sense. Anyway, if you're the type of person who will give up in an hour without beating it, a trusty password can easily bring you to where you left off. Or you can just cheat and get the password that has you already holding every weapon and saved all your friends sans the mermaid.

The best part....you can faintly hear traces of the Good Enough song by Cyndi Lauper looping in the backgrounds of several of the stages. Color me happy :). Probably one of my favorite NES side scrollers, although it does have the exploration aspect added, so that is probably why it's entertaining to play.

The only problem though is that the graphics are a bit TOO bland. Mikey looks like Annie dressed like a boy, and the enemies don't look to impressive, but they do it's job I guess. At least the control is good enough so when you're jumping across death gaps, you don't fall in 99% of the time.

I think I'll just go play the ROM since I'm STILL too lazy to hook-up the NES and pray for the cartridge to work (you know, the myth that blowing into it will make it work better).

Opinions on this game? I'm a bit bias towards the Goonies, so I may be thinking this game is better than it actually is.

Yes! That game is one of the funnest fucking Nintendo releases ever!

Thank you for that... The memories all came flooding back.

BBCW, do you remember Disney Adventures in the Magic Kingdom?

I haven't played this in at least 15 years --- but I used to LOVE the game.

If you still have a console (that's working) and can somehow find that game (it's much better than using an emulator), do so.

You are a character walking around Disneyland in all of it's 2-D glory. You get to ride the rides (play the rides) aswell as many other adventures.

Probably the single best NES game I've ever played.

And while this is a nostalgia trip, have you played Hook or Ducktales?

Ducktales was the bomb. Spectacular game. I played the hell out of that thing.

Heck, Disney games used to rock. I LOVED Mickey Mouse on the Genesis.

I use to play Ducktales all the time...except I hated the Transylvania stage (when I was 6, it seemed scary). I've never played the sequel though.

Hook never played. If it's a Video Game version of the movie with the same name, I have no interest in downloading.

Yeah, Ducktales was able to be completed in less than an hour. :P

I couldn't do it that quickly. I've always sucked at speed-beating a game.

An upcoming game I might review is Goof Troop on SNES. A Hella-fun game that I thought would suck the meat missile.

Gotta love Disney. I need to start recording the epsiodes from Toon Disney before it becomes Cartoon Network and shows current crap non-stop.

Disney games ruled.

Ducktales was a lot of fun.

Darkwing Duck was great in the sense that it was essentially a Mega Man clone, only using the Darkwing characters (shit - I wish Disney's get off their ass and start putting out some of their series on DVD, cause I'd buy Darkwing in a heartbeat).

And, of course, "Chip N' Dale's Rescue Rangers" remains one of my favorite NES games of ALL time. I never owned it, but I must have rented it 12 times.

C&D was great. It had the amusing little "A-Z" level selections, and you could skip a few IIRC.

Goonies II was a part of the STELLAR Konami launch titles in about 1987. Those titles, for the most part, were some of the best early games on the system.

Gradius, Track And Field, Castlevania, Rush 'N Attack, Goonies, Stinger, Top Gun... Out of all of those, the only average or below titles are Stinger and Top Gun, and Top Gun is only average because it's hard to translate a flight sim to the NES controller.

On top of that, Konami had very few, if any, crap games on the NES. Even CapCom had some trash every once in a while. The only half-assed Konami game that comes to mind is the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game that they released on the Ultra label.

I remember being excited getting TMNT back in the day (I'll say around 1991) but was just in a way pissed at the difficulty for level 3, that I gave up on for years.

Thank goodness TMNT 2 owned everythings ass.

Gotta love Castlevania too...whipping zombies ass' with a whip and cross = hours of entertainment. Still kinda hard to believe the games were like $70-$80.

If you're speaking in US dollars, the only $70-80 games I remember were for the SNES or Genesis. Most, if not all, NES games topped out at $50-55 US.

If you're talking Canadian dollars, that may be different.

There should be a ROM Request thread around here somewhere...

Do a search for NES roms on Yahoo and you might find it. Otherwise, consider using BitTorrent or Kazaa to find one of those jumbo NES ROM packs.

The main sites I use have it listed but when you download the folder there's no rom in it. I've tried a couple of sites and had the same problem.

ROMNation.net has pretty much everything for NES/SNES/GB/GBC/SEGA etc. except Mario & Zelda games.

And IIRC my father paid around $70 (maybe with tax, it was in NYC) for Castlevania at Toys R' Us.

And all the new SNES/Genesis games were that price, except the SERIOUSLY crappy games. Fucking got tricked into buying Street Combat for $20 when it first came out.

Did you right click to turn the game into a .zip file, or are you just getting nothing at all? Because I DL'ed from ROMnations and it came out fine.

These were the shit.

Had to let some go. Would've had more, but NES screenshots are difficult to come by, let alone in .jpg.

Hope to have given you all a bit of nostalgia.
