Just saw Mystic River.......good film...

Recommended Posts

So is the end just eluding to the fact that Sean Penn & Kevin Bacon are just gonna go with the flow and withold the coverup of Tim Robbins character's death? I mean, Sean Penn's wife in the flick had the COLDEST OF COLD looks on her face as she sees the crying wife, and just does this TURN AWAY like, oh well bitch, life goes on. Oh and anyone else wish they would have gone a little more in depth into what happened to Tim Robbin's character as a child.

Well, Tim Robbins' character was molested as a child -- I thought that was pretty clear.

Actually, I believe that Bacon's handgun gesture -- directed towards Penn's character -- meant that Bacon was going to get him for Robbins' death.

i don't know how to use spoiler tags, so i'll try and say this in a way that doesn't reveal too much to those who haven't seen it.

i agree Mike, that scene with Penn's wife was fucked up. as far as i was concerned, Robbins' wife did the right thing and co-operated with Penn, and that bitch had the nerve to be all high-minded about it..."How could she do that to her own husband?"...duh, bitch, she was scared, she didn't know what else to do, let's see how YOU'D react in a similar situation. she was looking out for the safety of her own child, not to mention herself, you'd think a fellow mother would understand that.

i think all that could be said about what happened to Robbins' character as a child was done well, without getting all too graphic. he was picked up and molested by two sick fucks and managed to escape, i think that's all that NEEDED to be said.

and forget Penn, i think Robbins gave the best performance in the film. the scene where he was using vampire movies as a metaphor for how he felt was especially good and well-written.

I agree with that. While I enjoyed this movie, I felt Penn's performance in 21 Grams this year was more deserving of the award nomination, as his Mystic River character seemed to not have as much depth as his character in 21 Grams.

Great movie. I had the idea that Bacon was going to let Penn walk free, letting Penn live with the guilt of killing his friend (Robbins). I think Bacon also felt some guilt over Robbin's death as he suspected him of the murder and also because he felt partly responsible for Robbin's abduction as a child.

Robbin's wife - well she thought he was the murderer, was in an unhappy marriage and really lead him to his death. Perhaps the book explains everything a little clearer..

I thought the ending was a bit of a letdown. What was the point of Laura Linney doing that whole bitch routine? I think they tried to show how she was resentful of Penn's former marriage and how he much he loved the daughter that wasn't hers, and it was almost like she felt empowered by the death, that now she can claim Penn as all her own and not have to share him with the ghosts of his past.

If so, that's all well and good, but she was barely in the movie, so suddenly giving her character something like that seems pretty tacked on.

I also felt Penn did a better job in 21 Grams. Here, he was basically channeling DeNiro. Speaking of which, did anyone get a Sleepers feel to tht movie? It might just be because of Kevin Bacon being in it, but the basic premise reminded me a lot of it.

Don't even get me started on Bacon's estranged wife and the crazy dealio with the phone calls...
