This Week in Baseball

Recommended Posts

Roy, please shut the hell up.  You're about two weeks late with all the bitching about that strike.  Your boy Anglesault already drove the call into the ground enough.

Blow me.

This is a baseball discussion thread, so you may wanna take your closet homosexual advances elsewhere.

People were discussing bad strike zones and that was the worst recent example I could think of from a game I watched.  I don't give a fuck if somebody else freaked out about it when it happened, I wasn't even posting here at the time, and I'm hardly bringing "all that bitching."

That's all well and fine, but there were over two pages of discussion on the damn call, so go find that thread if you wanna talk about it. And you registered here on the 20th of June. Most of the talk went down that night and the next day, so yeah, you were posting here at the time.

Dickface

Oooo *does wavy scared Scott Hall fingers gesture* Color me scared. I like how you can respond without breaking out the childish name-calling garbage.

Congrats to the Cubs for sweeping the south siders. Now the Cubs are 3 back and the Astros are 7 back. Still a little too close...and what is the deal with the 41-38 Milwaukee Brewers? We might have to earn those wins.

It was nice to see the jackasses with the relay race broom silenced after the homerun.

And my god, is there anything more brutal than a walk off walk?

I agree......That was hilarious. As soon as they showed those fools with the broom relay outside Carlos Lee hits a laser homerun to dead center. It would have beena little better if he would have homered to the street and hit one of those morons on top of the forehead.

And again, as much as I like Latroy...he's not a closer. He is a set-up or middle relieve guy. He's a great pitcher in those situations but in the ninth, it's just not him. The Cubs really need to see if there is a closer available they can make a run at for the future. Unless Joe has his fastball back up to speed and has learned to throw another pitch when he returns, the Cubs are going to have some fun ninth innings.

11 saves out of 15 is just not good enough in the NL Central. Not to mention, has Latroy had many spotless ninth innings in the 11 saves? A few times he has been belted for one or two runs with a three run cushion.

I'm glad Latroy is a Cub, I think he's an excellent pitcher in certain situations but I don't see him as a solid enough closer in the NL Central.

ETA: Looking through his numbers and I'm not pleased. When he's not in the ninth, he's barely allowing a hit. He can pitch a good ninth but he still seems a touch shaky. I'll wait till Joe comes back since Latroy is the best the Cubs have as a closer for now and no one seems available that is worth the effort.

That's misleading, because he pitched in middle relief for half the season. A middle reliever is credited with a blown save if he gives up the tying run in the 7th inning, when he never had a chance to pick up the save.

I don't believe in the closer mentality. A good pitcher is a good pitcher, regardless of the inning. Hawkins since June 1st has pitched 17 2/3 innings, given up 19 hits, 7 earned runs, 0 walks, 10 strikeouts, and has saved eight games in ten opportunities. 80% God-boy of closing, Danny Graves, has saved 81.5%.

Now, Graves has saved 81.5%, and Hawkins 80%. If a team won 100 games, the difference between Graves and Hawkins would mean a single win, or at MOST, two wins. Because of two wins, Graves is an All-Star, and Hawkins is unfit to close games?

Jesus Fucking Christ.  WHAT THE HELL DOES BOBBY ABREU HAVE TO DO TO MAKE AN ALL-STAR TEAM?!  4th in the league in OBP (.444).  10th in the league in slugging percentage (.576).  7th in the league in OPS (1.021).  4th in the league in stolen bases.  7th in the league in runs created.  4th in the league in Win Shares.  And the fucks in charge of player selection can't see fit to place him among the 20 best players of the National League?

All year we've had the point hammered into us that "this game counts."  If the game is so goddamned important, why are inferior players selected?

My God, I hope he isn't selected. Just to watch al rip his hair out.

And to keep tradition. I'm a big traditionalist.

If you really want to get back at the Astros for signing Clemens and Pettitte, voting Abreu in will help remind Astro fans that they let Abreu go in the last expansion draft.

IIRC, I think that was done to clear room in the outfield so that one Richard Hidalgo could get playing time. And we all know that they made the right choice there.

Oh, wait...

Another theory is that Abreu had a reputation for something or another, and the Astros had cooled on him as a prospect. He had a poor year the previous season, slugging just .387 for AAA New Orleans.
