I try to avoid posting entire blog posts, but Mickey Kaus's comment was too good not to post.

Beyond 'Stealth'--Kerry's Affirmative Amnesia Strategy: Mark Shields spent a day talking to undecided seniors recently. He concluded, "These people have no idea who John Kerry is." And it's Bob Shrum's job to make sure they never find out! At least that's his job if you buy the Dick Morris "stealth candidacy" theory--which I wouldn't be surprised to discover being embraced at the highest levels of the Kerry campaign. (See today's ABC Note, which says that "Kerry's staff evinces less respect for him and less fondness for him than Gore's people did about the 2000 standard bearer.") ... Actually, the Kerry team appears to have gone beyond a mere passive hide-the-candidate strategy and taken it to the next level, pursuing a pro-active make-the-voters-forget-the-candidate strategy. In the latest NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, "just 57 percent of the respondents say they know a lot or a fair amount about Kerry," reports NBC's Mark Murray. That's "a real drop from 68 percent in the NBC/Journal March survey." The voters actually know less about Kerry the more the campaign progresses. It's working! At this impressive rate of memory loss, most of the electorate won't even recognize Kerry's name on the Nov. 2 ballot.

Even if Kerry wins, he may end up like another "None-of-the-above" winner.

Well, JC had a bit more charisma than Kerry.

It's true, people will vote for Kerry to get Bush out of office, not because they particularly like the guy or know anything about him. Punitive voting will lead to a very unhappy country if he wins and doesn't set the world on fire with his presidency.

Punitive voting won't get him elected, period.

It got Clinton elected the first time.

That, and Ross Perot being a grandstanding jackass.

Well, Bush Sr REALLY didn't want to run (I firmly believe he had no desire to be President further). There wasn't the visceral hatred of the 1996 race or this race.

Whatever happened to Perot, anyway? Is he just being a pain in the ass on the radio, or public access or something? He totally dropped off the radar.

Visceral hatred? It always seemed to me that Clinton got along with Dole a lot better than some of his other adversaries.

I was referring to the supporters. The conservative base had a DEEP, visceral hatred of Clinton. That, sadly, COMPLETELY alienated the "soccer moms" and the "undecideds"

Not enough to watch a crap "documentary" that did little but borderline slander the man --- but they hated the man.

Bob Dole likes everybody! Bob Dole is popular, dammit!
