AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted July 3, 2004 Oh, I didn't know where Tajiri was. That doesn't excuse WWE's misuse of him for the past 2-3 years but at least he's not being shafted to dark matches. As for Kenzo, well, I hope he goes into some Japanese garbage fed, because he's not anywhere near good, his gimmick is stupid, and I have a personal hatred of any WWE announcer saying the words "geisha girl" ever since the Tajiri/Torrie incident. Actually, with all the talk of a yakuza thing, I'd MUCH rather they use his wife in the role of leader ala Lucy Liu's character in Kill Bill. The yakuza gimmick, of course should lead to the obvious yakuza vs mafia angle. Come on, you say that as if you didn't hate Michael Cole already. Of course, Torrie just wore a kimono, she wasn't a geisha. The gimmick makes me think that the WWE writers just watched some of Kurosawa's sushi Westerns, disregarded everything in it but the characters' looks, and called it a day. Then the thought of WWE writers even WATCHING Kurosawa makes me collapse into a fit of giggles. The Yakuza gimmick idea is solid, but WWE's already blown that. However, Kenzo would still look much cooler and relevant in a black suit as a silent thug then being carried around on "his own personal toilet" (most of Cena's stuff was bad, but that struck me as pretty funny since I was thinking the same thing). The Amazing Rando 0 Report post Posted July 3, 2004 I have a few thoughts on the subject, and even though I haven't watched SD recently, I sadly believe my points will be valid and be true. 1) The New Guy vs. Cruiserweight Dynamic. As stated thousands of times...it's stupid. It's Brock Lesnar syndrome. Nobody gave a shit when he was kicking the shit out of the Hardy's and whomever else, but once he got into the mix with guys like RVD and then the Rock...people actually cared and started to boo him and even smarks began to take more notice. Mordy was brought in and was immediately fed lower-carders (cruisers to Vince) when he could have jumped into a mid-card feud with someone like Charlie Haas, using Haas' affection toward Miss Jackie as a "sin" (since Jackie is technically Rico's "friend") and wanting to cleanse Haas of his wrongdoings. Haas would get some face pops out of it and the second Mordy went after Jackie he'd get booed from the fanboy crowd. 2) Character Depth Something that I love about certain characters is the depth they can have. Mick Foley is great at it, and I cite "Cane Dewey" and pretty much the whole Mankind character as examples. The back-story was more than just a story, and got people to care. It also helped that he immediately went after the Undertaker when he debuted in the WWF, but he had a compelling enough character to make people give a shit. Mordecai had ONE teeny weeny dimension. He never gave a reason for his actions, ever. He could have been a new star character-wise if they had given him an actual purpose with a goal. "Cleansing the Earth" or whatever is NOT a realistic or believable goal, if it was - he wouldn't be WRESTLING. That's a flaw in the character there, is that there are very few "goals" Mordy can have that make sense. Kenzo has a whole different problem, as he is trying to play old school heel and say "oh well I hate America for what they did to us in the past!" ...so Kenzo, you are SOOOO angry at us that you want to WRESTLE, something that only 5 million people tops cares about in the WHOLE COUNTRY. If you really cared enough, Kenzo, you'd do something alot better than beat up some schmuck with a united states belt around his waist. If you want to go with suspension of disbelief for Kenzo, fine...make WWE seem like the most important thing ever -- but then Kenzo should aim his sights at JBL, a true capitalist twit that Suzuki would seemingly enjoy tearing apart, not some silly "rapper". Maybe it would work better if Saddam or Osama would have went after Run DMC, but they didn't. Hell, this is a big reason Sean O'Haire didn't fly once he started appearing on shows live. Besides the atrocious Hogan stuff, his true purpose was never really defined or executed in any logical way - besides wanting to see Spanky naked, I guess. If that's what he wanted, then I think he should have made himself a little more clear in his vignettes. "I came for pasty ass" seems to send a different message than "i'm just telling you what you already know". So I'm repeating what has already been said many times, but how cool would it have been to see Mordecai walking through backstage and having a wall of wrestlers just split apart and watch him like "damn, what the fuck is up with that guy". Actually wait, the fact that the guy has to walk through the backstage area doesn't even sound like a picture that would work on any level, cause he would just seem horribly out of place. Nevermind...trying to get all this over-the-top stuff to work in the less-than-kayfabe world of the current WWE is wearing me ragged. If you notice, you don't see this kind of stuff on Raw, though I may be forgetting a few exceptions.
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted July 3, 2004 Great post, Rando. It wasn't just a few snide remarks and attempts at humor, although you're good at those, too. Also, yeah, SOH wanted to see some nude Spanky booty, but he also convinced Dawn Marie to take her top off. An addition though... If you want to go with suspension of disbelief for Kenzo, fine...make WWE seem like the most important thing ever -- but then Kenzo should aim his sights at JBL, a true capitalist twit that Suzuki would seemingly enjoy tearing apart, not some silly "rapper". Going after JBL could work also because, well, it's supposed to be obvious that Kenzo is locked into Japanese "tradition." He apparently possesses a great love of ancient Japanese culture that pre-dates the modernization of the country. He could hate America also because of what "they did" to Japan by, post-WW2, somewhat molding them into a greedy society of capitalist pigs forsaking tradition to become weaklings dependent on money and technology. Bradshaw would be the ultimate symbol of just that sort of American attitude. A perfect target...only that would force him to be a face. However, rather than being ANGRY!~ all the time, he should go about his vendettas with calm, cold calculation. To do otherwise would seem to be in conflict with his character. He would make his intentions known through actions, not bellowing in promos that no one can understand. I'm picturing him manipulating the greedy, selfish Smackdown stars like in Yojim-- *collapses in laughter*

Enigma 0 Report post Posted July 5, 2004 Why the fuck can't anyone spell his name right? I've seen "Moredecai" "Mordechai" "Mordicai" M-O-R-D-E-C-A-I That almost ranks right up there with the people who still spell "Devon Dudley"

I've seen "Moredecai" "Mordechai" "Mordicai" M-O-R-D-E-C-A-I That almost ranks right up there with the people who still spell "Devon Dudley" Why does anyone do typos or mistakenly think someone is spelled one way without seeing the actual spelling of it. Does it matter to the point of phyiscal anguish that needs addressing in the name of all things that is holy and sane?
Jobber of the Week 0 Report post Posted July 5, 2004 Mordecai needs less Bob Holly and more Lance Storm, even if they have to haul Storm out of OVW and have him join SD! touring around to help some of these guys. The end.

I've seen "Moredecai" "Mordechai" "Mordicai" M-O-R-D-E-C-A-I That almost ranks right up there with the people who still spell "Devon Dudley" Mordecai and Mordechai are both proper spellings for two slightly different names, actually. Devon is pronounced differently, of course... Is it still spelled "Buh-Buh Ray," by the way? Doing that angle would be an insult to Kurosawa, I'm sure.... Vince: He's dead anyway, right?
