Guest Anglesault Report post Posted July 10, 2004 W00t! Mets win 6-3.......Wiggy and Cameron hit back-to-back HRs. Damn that new Pete Rose. Damn him. Or is he the next Jeff Kent this week? I have a bitch of a time guessing what ludicrous comparison ol' Ty will get next.
strummer 0 Report post Posted July 10, 2004 Damn that new Pete Rose. Damn him. Or is he the next Jeff Kent this week? I have a bitch of a time guessing what ludicrous comparison ol' Ty will get next. Actually AS,according to Baseball References the player most resembling Ty Wigginton so far in his career: Ed Sprague Ty is a solid ballplayer. He is not a patient hitter and has a low OBP. But he has some pop and has a lot of extra base hits. The comparison to Pete Rose by Mets fans was probably based on hustle, and not pure talent. I don't think any Met fan is delusional to say he is an All Star caliber player. I certainly don't think he is. He has gotten some clutch hits for the Mets this year, including the homer off of Flash Gordon last week and the game winner tonight. He is a useful player, who will probably be traded anyway because David Wright is coming up.

strummer 0 Report post Posted July 10, 2004 Can anyone confirm/deny the Johnson/Gonzo fight I'm hearing reports about? Gonzo dropped an easy flyball with the bases loaded and all 3 runs scored. Johnson said something to him before going to the clubhouse and Gonzo followed him yelling back. The rest of the team went to break it up.

Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted July 10, 2004 No matter what people may say though the Yankees admitted they didn't have enough to get Freddy Garcia, what makes them think they can get RJ away from an owner who hates Steinbrenner? I've heard from people that the D-backs have agreed to an RJ for Youkilis and Abe Alvarez deal but that they have to get RJ to sign off on it. Either way its going to be interesting to see where he's headed Wed.

Rob E Dangerously 0 Report post Posted July 10, 2004 The Royals sold opening day hero/.105 hitter (4 for 38) Mendy Lopez to the Samsung Lions of the Korean Baseball Organization. Mendy hits 13 home runs in 30 games in AAA, and he's off to Korea
Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted July 10, 2004 To the Cubs fans of the board, since Patterson is just horrid who would you prefer to replace him? Choices I see out there are Preston Wilson and Steve Finley...maybe Randy Winn as well.
Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted July 10, 2004 I wouldn't mind seeing just about anyone show up to play Centerfield. I think that eventually, Patterson will become a strong player, but they don't have the luxury of time to wait for that to happen right now. Getting a guy in center doesn't mean they have to drop Corey, it just means his playing time right now dwindles heavily. Bottom line is, they need another bat in that lineup and more specifically, they need a true leadoff hitter. It truly does wonders for a lineup to have a guy at the top who's on base two, three or four times a game. Cubs don't really have anyone like that right now and I think if they want to contend anywhere, that's going to have to change.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted July 10, 2004 Its really tiresome listening to announcers discuss how much of a hitters' park Citizens Bank Park is. Yes, the park surrenders alot of home runs. But the park is just about average in terms of runs scored.
Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted July 10, 2004 After saying I wouldn't be watching the Cubs for a bit, I've actually watched bits and pieces of the game today. Going back to the first, Martinez was clearly safe and that's looming big right now, since it's just a one-run game. But man, pinch-hitting the ice-cold Grudzielanek in the place of Walker? I won't be negative about it until the resolution of the at-bat, but yeesh. I know there's the whole lefty vs. lefty thing, but I don't really like the move. sfaJack 0 Report post Posted July 10, 2004 Why is Dusty Baker infatuated with Tom Goodwin? I think he's had exactly one pinch hit that I can remember. EDIT: And now he subs out Walker for Grudz??? WTF? I hate these fucking managers constantly playing lefty/righty or righty/lefty with the pitcher/hitter matchups. LET THEM BAT. A good hitter will hit, no matter who's out there tossing and Walker, while not a great hitter, is better than Grudz, especially this year. SECOND EDIT: Fuck this. I think I'm gonna do like Bruiser and take a hiatus from the Cubs for a few days or so. This lack of offense is getting obscene and is doing nothing but pissing me off. Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted July 10, 2004 Yep, that Dusty Baker is a GENIUS. Pinch-hit for Todd Walker with a guy who pops out to the catcher on the second pitch.
Rob E Dangerously 0 Report post Posted July 10, 2004 And your Royals lineup for the day: Desi Relaford (3B) Tony Graffanino (2B) Mike Sweeney (1B) Matt Stairs (DH) Ruben Mateo (RF) Dee Brown (LF) Angel Berroa (SS) David DeJesus (CF) John Buck © Pena's batting a fucking .201 hitter leadoff and sending David DeJesus back down the lineup because.. i'm not really too sure. Probably because he's an idiot. DeJesus is the leadoff man of the future. And Relaford's getting to bat leadoff. Aaarrrrrrggghhhh

A good hitter will hit, no matter who's out there tossing and Walker, while not a great hitter, is better than Grudz, especially this year. It makes sense to play the matchups with hitters, especially with an obvious situation like this. The platoon differential is real. There's a big difference between what a hitter will hit versus lefties and versus righties. David Ortiz loses over 200 points of slugging percentage when he faces lefties. Last year his OBP vs. lefties was .260. Todd Walker is a career 251/298/352 hitter versus lefties, and Grudzielanek is 293/344/409 versus lefties. Dusty did exactly the same thing I would have done. Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted July 10, 2004 Why is Dusty Baker infatuated with Tom Goodwin? I think he's had exactly one pinch hit that I can remember. He doesn't have a lot to work with off the bench right now, so I can't fault him there. If Hollandsworth weren't on the DL, I'm sure we would've seen him. The Grudzielanek thing pisses me off, though. I say take your chances with the lefty vs. lefty match. Walker has at least been hitting, unlike Grudzielanek is basically finished. And I've gotta ask this: what exactly has Baker done to gain the status of being known as a great manager? I hate to bash my own team, but it wasn't like he took a group of losers and made them into winners. On paper it may seem that way, but the fact is, they went out and spent some cash in the winter of 2002 and brought in some guys who were used to winning and could help with just that. Then he's got the starting rotation with Wood, Zambrano, Clement and Prior. Not exactly killer to win regularly with them. Alou bounced back from a horrible 2002. If you'll recall, they were a game under .500 at the end of the first half last season. It was only the acquisition of the Pirates players that really gave them that last boost they needed. I just don't get the love for Baker, since he doesn't seem to have a whole lot to do with the actual success of the Cubs. He doesn't even seem to use his resources to their full potential. Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted July 10, 2004 Bunting to tie is fine here, but shouldn't the guy be able to, I don't know, bunt? Is there no worth to the man known as Corey Patterson? I mean, a rookie walks in a tough spot in his 10th ML at-bat to lead off the inning and Patterson can't even do his fucking job of moving the guy over. I know making contact with the ball when he isn't popping out is tough for Corey, but c'mon, this is ridiculous.

Aaarrrrrrggghhhh Honestly, lineup positioning means very little past the first inning, and given what Pena has to work with, I think Allard Baird is more to blame. Baird doesn't beat up the players and injure them Baird's been pretty freaking decent as a GM Baird and Pena aren't in the same page either. Examples: Mendy Lopez - Pena kept finding ways to put Mendy in games, even if he hit freaking .105, and Baird just sold Lopez's contract off to a Korean team. Adrian Brown - via Rotoworld: "May. 21, 2004 - 8:04 am et Royals' manager Tony Pena told reporters that Adrian Brown will continue to start against left-handed pitching. He will start in left field tonight and tomorrow against the A's Mark Mulder and Barry Zito. The 30-year-old Brown is not a fantasy worthy player." "May. 21, 2004 - 11:50 pm et Royals designated outfielder Adrian Brown for assignment. Manager Tony Pena must not have been in communication with GM Allard Baird when he said Brown would continue to play left field against left-handers. Brandon Berger will take over in that role." Pena is more to blame than Baird. Pena's the one batting a .201 hitter leadoff over our left-handed leadoff man of the future David DeJesus (9 for 37 at leadoff so far) BTW: today's bench is Damian Jackson, Ken Harvey, Alberto Castillo and Jose Bautista
