Undertaker dies at Royal Rumble 94

Recommended Posts

Guest bigdiswrestling

Anybody here remember this?

I remember being a 10 year old and kid an honestly scared to death as I watched this live. When that body rose over the monitors, i gasped and thought his ghost was flying away. I laugh about it now, but back then i was into the kayfabe. I knew he wasn't really dying, but It was still a creepy site and surprisingly, 100 times better than the recent Bearer death.

it's sort of funny that an angle 10 years ago works a million times better than it does now, even with all the technology we have.

I also loved the Dibiase Summer Slam angle. Two Undertakers shouldnt have been the main event at Summer Slam 94, but the story leading up to it intrigued me a lot. Pretty creative, and I miss the days when stories were booked for 3-5 months and not just 1-2 like they are now. Back when PPVs actually meant something.

Any memories about this event?

Even THEN I was going what the hell is this crap, except not in that term. One of the first times ever I didn't eat up whatever WWF did with a spoon. Ditto for UT/UT feud.

I was probably the only kid who ate it up like candy...

It's not until now that I realize how funny it is.

The first part, 10 heels beating him down was fine. OK, no problem. The urn releasing a green smoke...OK, this is getting weird. The Casket-Cam was over the top, and Marty Jannetty being suspended above the arena dressed as Undertaker was just too much.

Remember the original end of the Taker vs Taker match was gonna be a Lightning Bolt hitting the two while they were locked up and the lights would flash and the two would become one being

Apparently Vince had been reading "The Return of Superman" at the time

Its funny that later on they implied that Chuck Norris could keep all of those men at bay since he was the special enforcer during the Yoko/UT rematch. Jeff Jarrett selling that weak high kick by Norris as if he was shot is still hilarious.

I don't know if it's just me, but is it weird that the real athletes (boxers especially) throw some of the worst worked punches/kicks ever?

LOL

Sad part is, as a 13 year old kid - that's what I actually expected to happen. Either that or the Ultimate Warrior comes out, smacks around the evil Taker, lighning bolt shoots down, lights go out, lights come back on, Warrior and evil Taker are gone but good Taker is in their place.

Whoa ... I just gave myself a headache with that booking.

Sadly back then I was the ultimate Undertaker mark, I ate everything with a spoon and asked for more. Heck I even though UT/UT was awesome especially when they hit each other with four tombstones. Don't forget Leslie Neilson and the undertaker search~!

I remember watching it and being Ok with the whole thing until Undertaker appeared on the big screen. Then it was a case of what the hell is this crap? I hated the whole angle and was glad when it was over. I do however kinda wish they had done the orignal ending with the lighting bolt. It would have just capped off the whole crappy thing.

YES YES..

back then it was clever because i was 10, but I seem to remember something now that makes me laugh impossibly hard.

"The Case is Closed"

then they show a closed case...

a huh..... hmmm

I liked it up until he...um...was called up. The urn thing didn't bother me; i looked at it as them trying to put over the character & all that. I loved the casket promo, even though i knew how absurd it was. But Jannetty...fucking Jannetty. It really got stupid to me at the time (which means now it's either hilarious or painful depending on mood) when Vince & DiBiase got all quiet & respectful. I hate that announcing anyway (cheapens tragedy, you know), but it's Vince & Ted FUCKING Dibiase.

I always wanted Bundy to just DEVOUR Chuck Norris. BTW, did they ever really explain why exactly these guys wanted to fuck Taker over in either match (especially Survivor Series)?

They were tired of him whooping their asses all the time...wait, that's probably the shoot reason.

The Undertaker character was almost unbeatable. His only known national television job was to Hogan at T.T.I.T, so I guess getting rid of him meant not having to worry about beating him for titles or whatever.

Everyone I knew at the time marked out HUGE for the two Taker feud. Some people I know still consider it great. I think it was entertaining and an interesting twist, though if they pulled something like that off now I'd go apeshit on them.

At the time i remember liking the UT promo that was on the screen, but part of me was thinking 'there's no way he could be laying flat on his back in that casket'. It was built to the specifics of yokozuna's body, and the casket wasnt long enough for Taker to lay flat in.

Even as a kid I wondered why the WWF would hire an actor/comedian to find one of its biggest superstars. The sad thing is that I kept trying to justify the situation in my own mind.

I dunno, i still am amused by the little kid talking about seeing Taker sliding down the slide at the playground.

But i also mark for Ludvig Borga, so to each their own.

Welcome to the club. I actually think he could've been something big in WWF if not for him completely shattering his ankle versus Rick Steiner from the 1/17/94 MSG show.

The only problem with him character wise was being a freakin' enviromentalist... well, not literally, but his main beef was america is a filthy, disgusting place.

Borga was the fucking man. I don't think he sucked at all (wasn't Vader quality, but might have been, dammit. The main reason i'm reluctant to hate Heidenreich is that he gives me a Borga vibe). The character was totally flawed (Finnish anti-American with no motivation, & his claims that America STINKS FUNNY), but damn, i love the guy. Made Jannetty his bitch.

Nah, I did too. Of course, I was a 6-year-old who was scared of the Undertaker anyway. Cried my eyes out.

Actually, I bought a VHS copy of 'Rumble 94 just for that match (hey shut up, I liked 'Taker v. Yokozuna) and just as he died ... so'd the video.

One question I have about that whole angle...

If The Undertaker wasn't injured at the time, would the ending of that match have been any different?

Just curious.
