DirecTV drops TNA

Recommended Posts

Neither TNA nor DirecTV are commenting about the negotiations to get TNA's Wednesday night PPVs back on the home satellite system's menu. Last night's TNA PPV was the first not available on DirecTV. TNA released a statement this week stating that TNA PPVs would not be on DirecTV this month, and possibly longer.

PWTorch.com has learned that InDemand is in charge of the distribution of TNA PPVs and negotiated a two year contract with DirecTV which expired on June 30. TNA is not able to directly offer its PPVs to DirecTV. Instead, it's done through InDemand, which has an interest in having "exclusive programming" from DirecTV, but also stands to profit from the increased buys through DirecTV subscribers.

The inherent conflicts of interest, or at least competing interests, have made the situation more complicated than it otherwise would be. InDemand is also not commenting on the situation.

DirecTV historically has drawn a disproportionately larger share of PPV buys for TNA compared to cable systems on per subscriber basis, so it's vital for TNA to get back on DirecTV.

TNA continues to draw, according to industry sources, in the 10,000 to 20,000 range each week in PPV buys, although no specific numbers are ever released by any of the parties involved.

Dish Network does not offer TNA and has not from the beginning, perhaps due to its unwillingness to come to terms with the offer made by competitor InDemand, the distributor of TNA PPVs.

The new clearance and solid ratings for TNA's Impact show on Fox Sports Net may give DirecTV more incentive to remain a provider of the programming, figuring buys are likely to expand. It may also give InDemand more leverage when negotiating favorable terms with DirecTV.

That made more sense than 411's writeup, which said:

InDemand and DirecTV are competitors as InDemand often likes to have "exclusive" shows (such as TNA) that DirecTV cannot air.

That translation confused me since you can't watch InDemand content on DTV and vice versa. DirecTV does their own thing (Direct Ticket.)
