Guest Frank_Nabbit Report post Posted July 11, 2004 SuperClash III December 13, 1988 in Chicago, IL UIC Pavilion drawing 1,672 ($25,081) Shown live on PPV (0.5) Hector, Chavo, & Mando Guerrero beat Cactus Jack & Rock-n-Roll RPMs (6:35) when Chavo pinned Lane. Eric Embry pinned Jeff Jarrett (4:13). Jimmy Valiant pinned Wayne Bloom (0:24). WCCW Texas Champ Iceman King Parsons pinned Brickhouse Brown (5:41). Paul Diamond, Pat Tanaka, & Madusa Micelli beat Ricky Rice, Derrick Dukes, & Wendi Richter (5:43) when Richter pinned Micelli. Greg Gagne beat Ronnie Garvin (5:52) via countout to win the AWA TV Title. The Syrian Terrorist won a "street fight lingerie battle royal" (8:36). Also in the match were: Bambi, Peggy Lee Leather, Laurie Lynn, Brandi Mae, Malibu, Nina, Pocohantas, and Luna Vachon. Sgt Slaughter beat Col DeBeers in a "boot camp" match. WCCW Tag Champs The Samoan Swat Team beat Michael Hayes & Steve Cox (7:53) when Samu pinned Hayes. Wahoo McDaniel beat Manny Fernandez (7:48) in an "Indian strap" match. AWA World Champ Jerry Lawler beat Kerry Von Erich (18:53) to win the WCCW Title when the referee stopped the match due to Von Erich's excessive bleeding. The Rock-n-Roll Express DCO Jimmy Golden & Robert Fuller (5:52). -------- Watching the show now.... The Gurrerro's were sensational as the opener was tremendous Jimmy Valient's squash was embarassing, and Bloom didn't bother selling the finish anyway Kerry Von Erich stumbling through his promo was funny/sad The Chicago crowd turning on Greg Gagne was rather amusing, as the annoncers tried putting him over and the crowd would have none of it... Greg even had to mention the boo's in his post match interview Larry Nelson's drooling over the Women's match was amusing as he couldn't even get the name right Verne Gagne's interview was funny as well as he stumbled his way through the line up, and then looked around confused as he waited for the interview to end Lawler mentioned Lawler's amputated foot during his promo, saying Kerry's leg is 100% or maybe even better, I hear he's got some superior protection for it
Guest Frank_Nabbit Report post Posted July 11, 2004 Luna had her walk down already here 5 years prior to her WWF debuet The crowd chants "Take it off" during the Woman's Battle Royal and the annoncers cover it by saying "The crowd chanting Brandi Mae!" Guest Frank_Nabbit Report post Posted July 11, 2004 43 active wrestlers splitting a 25,000 draw No wonder only the AWA guys got paid! That'd be roughly 550 $ a wrestler... Compare this to WM 5 where Hogan made 1.3 million $ personally (although PPV buys had much to due with that)
JHawk 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2004 The problem is the AWA wanted a neutral site to hold the show. You couldn't hold it in Memphis or Minneapolis, as Lawler's win would have been seen like favoritism to everybody else. Not that it wasn't seen that way after the finish anyway. You couldn't hold it in Texas because the Von Erichs were still considered gods in Dallas at that point, and the finish could have conceivably led to a riot. The problem is those were the only areas that they could have truly drawn a great gate, as Chicago and other towns didn't see AWA or World Class promote their areas at all at the time. Does anybody know what the PPV clearance was for that show? As heavily hyped as that show was and as awesome as it looked on paper going in, that should have had an absolutely incredible buyrate. Were there PPV-ready cable systems that decided not to carry it for any reason?
Guest Arnold_OldSchool Report post Posted July 12, 2004 I'd have to argue the "awesome" line up comment, as most of the bouts were full of older guys and regional workers. And the money matches Sarge/Col Lawler/KVE Wahoo/Manny had been done around the horn previously
1234-5678 0 Report post Posted July 12, 2004 Hector, Chavo, & Mando Guerrero beat Cactus Jack & Rock-n-Roll RPMs (6:35) when Chavo pinned Lane. Who were in the RPMs, and how did Cactus look back then?
Guest Arnold_OldSchool Report post Posted July 12, 2004 The RPM's were Mike Davis and some other guy, basically just 2 regional wrestlers who bounced place to place Cactus looked like a thinner, younger Foley, he does similar grunts as he fights, and took a back drop onto the bare cement floor

Plus these were supposed to be the blowoffs to all these feuds that had been done around the horn. Most of the interpromotional matches and the World Class stuff was real good, and that was the stuff i was looking forward to anyway. Also bear in mind that I was ten years old, so i thought that was a kickass lineup.

Were there PPV-ready cable systems that decided not to carry it for any reason? At this point, neither company could draw an audience at all, so nobody had a desire to see the show. I'm sure a lot of companies didn't carry it because I doubt they saw a reason to do so. -=Mike
Guest Frank_Nabbit Report post Posted July 14, 2004 The rest of my thoughts..... Ray Stevens calling Sarge "A tough cookie" just sounded.. so...lame?... or something... How did DDP get hooked up with a white supremisist (Col. Debeers)? Luna wacked out promo with the snake was good stuff.... by why did all the woman get interview time and barely any of the guys (In the back stage at least) Minus Verne Gagne who got 3 interview segments! Ray Stevens sounds like Billy Graham on commentary IMO (Circa SBG 1988) The SST vs PS Hayes + Cox was good with some really neat comedy spots that didn't take away from the match Fujinami was there due to being in WCCW at that point, and they could toss him in a match? I never realized how obvious it was that Kerry bladed his arm accidently prior to the match starting, and how much KVE and the annocers put it over. (KVE was looking at the wound constantly) KVE NO SOLD JL's bah gawd pile driver! And did a nice blade job to boot. and RnR E. vs Studd stable going to a double DQ was the silliest PPV ending perhaps ever, as it didn't send the crowd home happy, and didn't lead anywhere one last note: The all time winner for most mismatched music for a gimmick would have to be the Samoan Swat Team coming out to "Don't worry be happy" WTF?
