PSP UP FOR RESERVATION!

Recommended Posts

Yup today I went into work and noticed that the PSP was added to our list of consoles catergorys in our computers. I typed in the system to see if the stuff was in there and it sure was. Over at Gamecrazy (not sure if other stores are doing this yet.) the PSP is up for reservation. Its pretty picey through at 400 bucks and I heard the battery life is really short on the PSP. The DS was also in the computer screen but the compnay is waiting on the offical release date before we give the option for reservation right now. The rumor is either November or March for the DS. I"ll update this once I get word.

It can't be $400 just for the PSP. I hope it's for a package deal with the PSP, a few games, and maybe some accessories. Still though, $400 is too expensive, considering that's what the Gamecube package (Gamecube, three games, memory card, extra controller) cost on launch-day when I bought that.

No its 400 in my computer just for the system itself. If it was a bundle deal it would say so in my computer. For example the Gamecube bundles. The computer would say "Gamecube (color) Zelda bundle" or somethign similar. The computer just lists the system.

That'll be $83 Million, your mortal soul, and first born child...

However, at least the PSP is designed perfectly for those types of games with the button layout.

However, I think it's very telling that out of all the info Sony is releasing, they're keeping the price the most under wraps...

They did the same thing in 1995 and then shocked the world(especially Sega...) by announcing the PSX would be only 300.

PS2's US price was kept secret for a long time too. Did everyone just forgot all the "OMFG ITS GOING TO BE 600 DOLLARS ITS DOOMED~! DC WILL TAKE OVER~!" stuff from back then?

I don't remember that, since I certainly didn't say it. However, if PSP is going to be competitive they may not be making any money off it so they can establish it.

PS2 using a DVD format kinda killed the DC. :P

Yea, Anyaka has a point, when the PS2 was first coming out they kept the price underwraps for a long long time, and everybody was acting the same exact way ITS GOING TO BE $500-1000 dollars what a ripoff!

It'll prob. be 200-250, theres no way they would release it at 400, maybe its an estimated price.

Clearly you're exaggerating. I don't think anyone with any sense thought Sony was going to make the same mistake as Panasonic did.

However, Sony's clearly thinking of this more as a compact console than they are a portable console.

250 bucks still is too much for a portable/handheld/whatever you call it--to me. Plus remember the PS3, etc are going to be around the corner at the time.

I feel the same way about Nintendo's follow up, which is like a portable N64 with a gimmick tacked on.

The GBA itself doesn't really need an upgrade--Nintendo's planning to release this one in reaction, because they're worried about Sony's device.

I guess with GC lagging in the sales they'd feeling the heat a lot more than they were when the puke-green Game Boy was beating out weak competitors.

$400? Wow...

I heard for a while it would be around $250... and I thought that was nuts.

But, I honestly think this thing will sell well, despite the price... the graphics on PSP look amazing.

From what it looks like, it plays dvds, music, and does a few other things like wireless cam chat and stuff. It's like a portable little computer than a gaming system so that could be why its 400. Thing is DVD's kill off the battery life for the PSP, if you play a movie on it the battery's only go for 2 in a half hours. So no 3 hour movie's if you plan on it for a PSP. Its going to have a battery pak recharger from what it looks like. No news on the DS, I'll still let you guys know once I hear something.

It doesn't play DVDs. According to IGN, the PSP uses Universal Media Discs (UMD) which hold 1.8 GBs and resemble Sony's Mini-Disc in the fact that its enclosed in a cartridge. The discs aren't writable and Sony won't even be selling UMD burners to 3rd parties to make the games (Sony will supposedly have control of making the discs).

Because of that, I dont really see how they can tout it as playing videos/movies unless they can fit on Sony's Memory Sticks, which the PSP will use for memory. Sony might release UMD versions of their movies, but the fact that UMD and DVD are incompatible means you would have to buy 2 different versions of the movie, and the UMD version would probably be barebones because of the size limitations.

IGN also claims the battery life to be anywhere from 2.5 to 10 hours depending on usage.

So Sony is going to be like NES-era Nintendo now? Joy.

Well if theres a plus, they wont have to worry about piracy too much.

Thanks for correcting me Marvin, wasn't sure if it'd be able to play dvd's or not. I saw what the games would look like in the new PSM magazine and they were discs in these holder cartiage type of things and you can't remove the discs so I was wondering how movies were gonna work for that. So this basically means that its going to play limited movies, oh thats great. Anyone else got some info on it?

Good to see this is doomed for failure from the start. For starters I'm not going to pay $250 for a PSP. It's also way too big and probably too frail. From the looks I can probably transport my SP around with 4 games in my bag and still have more room. The PSP also has no library compared to the Gameboy. I think I'll stick with Nintendo and wait for the new Gameboy to drop to $100 before buying the PSP.

I checked the computer at work today, it went down to $350. Still no word on the DS.
