cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted July 25, 2004 Psycho outgrossed its sequels. Silence Of The Lambs outgrossed Hannibal and Red Dragon. The Matrix outgrossed Revolutions and Reloaded (I assume). Fellowship Of The Ring outgrossed the other two. Weekend At Bernie's outdid the sequel. A few words on this....comparing Pscho and its sequels in raw numbers is pointless considering Psycho was 1960 and the sequels were made in the 80s. The Matrix made about 171 million domestic while Reloaded did about 281 million (and like 730 million worldwide). The first did make more domestic than Revs did however, think it made about 140 million. FOTR made quite a bit less than either TTT or ROTK did. Worldwide FOTR made 867 million I think, while TTT did 926 million, and ROTK with a staggering 1.1 billion. Titanic by comparison did 600 million in the US and 1.8 billion overall. That's just insane. With inflation Gone With the Wind would have done something like 1.2 billion domestic, which is mind blowing.
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted July 25, 2004 Yow--if adjusted for today, GwtW would be grossing over a billion?!? "9. The Exorcist WB $666,729,078" HA!

So we just have to wait for another movie like a Jaws or ET to come along. I like how if you adjust for inflation, Back to the Future did better money than two of the LOTRs. And Ghostbusters did better than all 3 LOTRs and Passion of the Christ. Those numbers don't sound so great now, do they? http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted/ I'd also be very interested to see how those numbers translate to now with inflation. 26 Thunderball $451,044,000 $63,595,658 1965 39 Goldfinger $399,789,000 $51,081,062 1964
Downhome 0 Report post Posted July 26, 2004 The film that finally beats out Titanic will not be a Star Wars or a Spider-Man, at least I don't think so. I think it'll be something that came and went, just like Titanic did. It'll start out with a, for the most part, low number but it'll just keep going on and on and will not see much of a % drop at all, since it'll keep various types of people going back to see it over and over again. The only sequel type film that I think would even have any sort of a chance would be Shrek 3, since so many different people seem to love that on. Whatever beats Titanic though, will more than likely be something that we do not expect, and something that we've never heard of before.

Kahran Ramsus 0 Report post Posted July 26, 2004 If they don't blow it, and that's a big if, the Ten Commandments remake has a good shot. The 50s remake did outgross Titanic if adjusted for inflation.
LaParkaYourCar 0 Report post Posted July 26, 2004 They're remaking The Ten Commandments? This just sounds like a bad idea to me. Next thing you know they'll try and remake Ben Hur too!
UseTheSledgehammerUh 0 Report post Posted July 26, 2004 To correct some posters' errors: SHREK 2 is right now 170 million behind Titanic's U.S. record. SHREK 2 is over 1 billion dollars behind Titanic's Worldwide record. So slow your role on the "Shrek 2 is so close to Titanic!" Also, Return of the King is the #7 grossing U.S. movie. It went to #2 Worldwide, however.
