PSP or Nintendo DS

Recommended Posts

Since Sony and Nintendo are about to battle it out in the handheld console area. I've deciced to make a thread on which one you think your most likely to get, if are planning on getting one. So which one would you like to get or see do well? I'm thinking the DS for me, it just looks very cool and sounds very good. I saw the E3 press conferances tonight and the DS just looked better than the PSP did. Let the discussion begin.

I'll get both.

My favorite will be whichever has Tekken, MK, FF and MGS.

PSP will outsell DS in the long run... it's a better product, plus the Sony name.

Also, DS is definitely coming out November 11 in the States.

Anyone who has owned an Ericcson can attest that it's smart Sony opted not to go the cell phone route with this. Most worthless piece of crap phone around outdone only by (ironically enough) a Nokia I had before.

Regardless, too damn much money in either case, but even more so with the PSP. DS has no interesting games lined up, and the PSP isn't even really a portable. It's PS2.5.

I'll be sticking with my GBA until the prices drop, and each system build's up it's selection of games.

The new Gameboy once the price drops. The PSP is just worthless to me as it's not really portable, has no battery life and I would have to rebuy movies to watch on it.

The Gameboy always wins out with me because it will always have the bigger library of games. The PSP might have a few good ones but I've got 15 years worth of Gameboy games already so why buy a new system?

Slightly on topic, slightly off.

Now that they're releasing a version of Mario 64 for the DS with Luigi (as well as Yoshi and Wario) in it, who will take Luigi's place for all those "Find Luigi In Super Mario 64" theories?

The Redesigned Nintendo DS

The hardware announcements that came may also come to make people happy:

# Redesigned to sport a slimmer, sharper look

# Features a thinner, black base and an angular platinum flip-top cover

# Face buttons and shoulder buttons are larger, and some have been reconfigured for optimum use

# Includes a new storage slot for the touch screen's stylus

# The speakers now broadcast in stereo sound with or without headphones

Link to a nice hi res pic of the newly designed DS.

And if you go to Nintendo's site for the DS, theres an interesting feature dealing with the battery:

---

Battery & Power Management: The battery is rechargeable and the unit features a low-energy-consumption design. The DS also has Power Management functions of Sleep mode and Standby mode. In Sleep mode, players can stop and resume game play whenever they like. If the user receives a message from a friend or user nearby, DS activates itself from Standby mode.

So forgive my ignorance, but is this going to play Game Boy games or entirely new games? And why is Nintendo releasing this when they just came out with the Game Boy Advance SP?

Both. It's backwards compatible just like GBA and GBC. Plus, of course there will be new DS games.

$$$

Sonic, of course. :)

With the new design, I think if DS gets a good amount of games, I'll end up picking it up. By the time it rolls around I probably will have dropped my SP for the last time. I'm also not shelling out for a new pair of hand grips so I'm thankful they've reverted to the horizontal design (like the first GBA, Game Gear, NGPC, Lynx, etc) design over the vertical (DS, GB, GBC).

However, it *must* have a decent line-up before I fork out for it.

I'll probably pass on both for at least a year or two since handhelds are on the bottom of my game playing totem pole. I'm slightly more tempted to get the DS than the PSP since it has backwards capability and backwards compatability is my friend in the video game world. I also dig the DS redesign. Much more sexier than the original design, I say. But to reiterate, I won't be snatching up either handheld until their libraries are established.

The PSP will be a killer on batteries.

I'm thinking they will probably push other features instead and market it as a personal entertaiment device.

September 20, 2004 - Today, Nintendo finally broke the news on the Nintendo DS system.

The Nintendo DS, it's upcoming dual-screen handheld system, will launch in North America on November 21st for a retail price of $149.99.

PictoChat, the software program that enables DS owners to sent text and pictures wirelessly to nearby DS systems, will be embedded in the system hardware. The DS system will spring to life out of "sleep mode" if it senses any other systems in the area, giving gamers the opportunity to chat spontaneously with each other.

More than 100 companies have signed on to create games for Nintendo DS, while Nintendo itself is already developing its first 20 titles. Electronic Arts' Madden NFL, The URBZ: Sims in the City, Need for Speed Underground, Tiger Woods and GoldenEye are being made for the system. The complete lineup of games planned for the launch of Nintendo DS will be announced in the near future.

Nintendo has confirmed that the system will be backward compatible with Game Boy Advance games, but will not support system-link multiplayer in GBA games due to the DS' lack of link cable port.

Nintendo chose the United States to lead the worldwide launch of Nintendo DS because of overwhelmingly positive and enthusiastic reaction from consumers and to take advantage of the holiday sales season. After the subsequent launch in Japan, the system will be available in Europe and Australia in the first quarter of 2005.

"Nintendo's mission remains unchanged: expand the game experience," says Satoru Iwata, president of Nintendo Co., Ltd. "Nintendo DS is the road map to the future of video games, and most clearly demonstrates the type of innovation that players demand."

Also, a demo of Metroid Prime: Hunters will be packed in.

Aha it's a demo of Metroid. I figured as much. The blurb on InsidePulse said the full game was included, that didn't seem right. Still I can't wait, and I'm ok with that price. Only two months to wait huzzah.

On the DS, what a stupid place to put the power button. Right above the control pad? I can see slip-ups of the thumb causing you to shut down the system by accident.

I don't see that as a problem. The Neo Geo Pocket Color has that too. You'd REALLY have to be an uncoordinated lout to end up pressing it on accident.

Even then, maybe they could have it set up like the NGPC, where you have to *hold* the power button in a few seconds for it to shut off. That's how I think they'll do it, but I really never saw a problem with a slide-switch on the side of the system, so don' t know why they switched.

I'm more concerned about the Start and Select buttons close together if they will usually be used to trigger a "soft reset." On my ProgramPad for PS2 I was fighting Gill, and accidentally soft reset to the title screen.

Good to see that the DS has some big name titles in the works, although none of them are games *I'm* interested in. So far only Metroid looks interesting.

That's what I'm hoping for. Though, I liked the simple switch on the side of the SP.

All in all, though, there's just something about portable 3D gaming that just doesn't appeal to me. Maybe I'm just biased to 2D SNES-ish stuff for the SP..

I agree on all points. I've already expressed plenty of doubts about the portable 3D stuff in the past. The PSOne with the viewscreen and certainly the N-Gage don't appeal to me at all. Maybe this will but I'd have to give it a lot of thought, and I hope they wouldn't abandon 2D--portables are the last place where 2D still rules.

However, I'll admit to being biased as well.

Yes, sucks that it's only a demo, but it's unlikely you'll be able to rent DS games so it's nice...

Most rental places don't carry them. Major chains don't and sometimes local ones carry them, but those usually have high rental fees too.

If anything, I won't buy one of these brand-new. I'd most likely trade in my old SP to get a discount on it. But that's only if I see a slew of games I'm interested in coming out.

I also think it's lame how they hoot and hollar about the wireless capabilities and this Pictochat thing. Ok, great. But it's only useful if you a] know someone with another DS, and b] are within 10 to 30 meters of them. They're acting like they gave it Blackberry technology or something. If this thing could send texts to cell phones and MSN, then I could understand.. but geez man.

Just a demo? That's so lame.

Given that all the GBA games work with it, its not that bad, and I doubt Sony will pack in any games with the PSP, although they might feel the need to now.

vivisectiv: Again, agreed. Sounds like another unnecessary gadget that those Japanese folks love but wouldn't really be necessary for us. Those of us with cell-phones, especially with IM services, wouldn't really need to make much use of it. Then again, I'd rather hand-write a message...even then, though, it's more of a gimmick because I'd still rather *talk* then write.

I also doubt the PSP will have a pack-in game. A collection of demos, maybe.

Insidepulse has some speculation/news up for DS...

http://www.insidepulse.com/article.php?contentid=21399

Plus they admit it's just a rumor, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if this deal about the PSP battery life was true...

http://www.insidepulse.com/article.php?contentid=21452

Although why movies would use up more power than games I don't understand. The site's biased against PSP/Sony anyway, but they indicate that story is unconfirmed.
