Here's your blockbuster trade

Recommended Posts

Just being reported by ESPN News.

Details coming, four teams involved. Definently know the Expos are the 3rd, don't know who the fourth is.

I've heard Gonzalez and a minor leaguer to the Expos for Cabrera, who is presumably part of the Nomar deal

The rumor was Matt Clement and Orlando Cabrera go to the Red Sox. But that was when it was a three team deal.

I'm willing to wager that Clement went to Boston. I was wondering why Nomar hadn't been playing the last few games. "His heel is acting up" just seemed like just an excuse.

I'm hearing that the prospects the Cubs gave up were Brendan Harris and Francis Beltran. Beltran was a good arm out of the pen and was supposedly a guy they wanted in the closing role down the road, so this is interesting. Obviously, things aren't all fleshed out yet.

Weird. TheScore's ticker was saying that it was a 4-team trade, but now it says 3-team. I'm pretty sure they're just picking up their news from ESPN, too.

Wow, a starter, a SS AND a 1st baseman for Nomar? AND Lowe is gone? Why to the Twins, though? I thought he sucked on the turf.

*Is happy with trade*

Guess you can drop Clement and Lowe from the equation. I got this right off ESPNNews:

Sox get

Cabrera

Mientkiewicz

Cubs get

Nomar

Twins get

Prospects

Expos get

Alex Gonzalez and prospects

No Clement kind of bugs me, but they got a good SS and a defensive 1B, so that's worth getting Nomar out of there.

seems very unlikely that they would dump Nomar for just Cabrera and Funny Name. I'm betting the 4 team is the right trade.

So in summary, the Cubs gave up Gonzo, Harris, Beltran and technically Cabrera. I liked Beltran and despite his poor bat, I can't help but feel bad for Gonzo, who just went from a playoff chase to a dead-end situation. But that aside, I think the Cubs are huge winners here, getting Nomar without giving up Clement.

I know expectations for the Cubs were high, but their WC chances just improved vastly.

I'm curious, too. What do the BoSox fans on the board think of this trade? Seems like a fairly poor deal for them if you ignore that Nomar may have not been back next year.

I like the deal for the Red Sox.

They improved their defense and got a shortstop that they'll be able to keep. Also, this keeps Millar away from the defensive side of the ball.

What a stupid trade. The Red Sox just got fleeced, they should get more than a couple .250 hitters for Nomar. I'd be shocked if the "FINAL-FINAL" deal doesn't have them picking up at least another reliever.

Now that I've thought about it, and have gotten the full trade:

Well, it improves the defense (especially at 1st base), and I hear Cabrera is a good defensive SS. But no Clement is not good, and just those two guys (with no prospects or anything), really lowers the quality of the trade for Boston.

On the radio they're speculating that Nomar's injury might have played a part in the Sox not getting top dollar for him.

And now they said the Sox added their 2003 1st round pick (OF Matt Murton) into the deal.

Official announcement at 6PM.

I really don't know why they couldn't have thrown in Lowe for some prospects or a 3rd or 4th starter or something.

This is a kind of bad trade.

Now here's the question: is Nomar just a rental or is he going to re-sign with the Cubs next season? I think on the surface, this was a great move for the Cubs, but they gave up three highly-touted prospects. A pretty hefty tag if Nomar is just a two-month rental.

it's not the same team obviously, but Nomar was less then thrilled about being in Chicago when he was supposed to swap with Mags Ordonez before the season.

The question is, is Nomar enough to catch the Cards, or are they looking wild card?

I agree, I think that Nomar would stay depending on the offer, otherwise he is going out west.

Wild Card great chance, catching the Cards, no chance.

I'd have to imagine at this point they're just looking to ensure their possession of the WC. I think this trade greatly helps them with that goal and that if they wanted a good chance of actually getting it and then being successful in the postseason, a fairly big move was needed. So I get this trade, but it's a bit short-sighted at the same time, since it's up in the air if he'll even re-sign. That's what would have made giving up Clement so stupid. Even though he's also a free agent at the end of the season, I think they've got a better chance of re-signing him and at a better price.
