Heel to Face, Face to Heel

Recommended Posts

OK, watching through my WrestleMania tapes again, and I was just wondering how some old-school wrestling turns happened:

Jake "The Snake" Roberts

"Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff

Greg "The Hammer" Valentine

Hercules (his turn turning to Power and Glory)

Don Muraco

Thanks in advance.

Er, sorry.

For Roberts, from when he turned from a heel to a face around 86-87

For Orndorff, his turn between Mania 1 and 2

For Valentine, his turn in the early 90s.

For Muraco, his turn before WrestleMania 4.

1) No idea

2) I'm guessing it involved becoming a member of the Heenan Family and turning on Hogan

3) Valentine got hit by an arrant guitar shot one day and got fed up. He did a minor blade job and then appeared on Prime Time Wrestling the next week with his natural blonde hair again

4) No idea

Roberts - i believe he got turned face by a Honky Tonk Man guitar shot prior to WM3.

Orndorff - Just a guess, but after stuffing up at WM1, Piper and Orton bad mouthed him and he turned face in the process

Valentine - no idea

Muraco - I thought Superstar Billy Graham helped him find his confidence and became his spiritual advisor, even getting him to wear tie-dye clothes.

Heel roberts' cobra attack on Savage=greatest heel act ever.

And hitting Elizabeth (and giving Savage 3 DDT's) at Tuesday in Texas was the greatest 'heel act' sequel ever.

Here goes, for Hercules:

On July 15, 1990, Hercules (a FACE) defeated Akeem (HEEL).

Paul Roma & Hercules defeated Warren Bianchi & Red Tyler in what looks to be their first teaming, the next night, on July 16, 1990. Before this, Roma was curtain jerking against jobbers (even the Brooklyn Brawler).

They wrestled a SECOND match that evening, taped for the August 4, 1990 edition of Superstars, against two jobbers.

At the July 17, 1990 taping, Herc and Roma defeated known FACE jobbers Jim Brunzell & Jim Powers. Later, they appeared WITH SLICK FOR THE FIRST TIME, squashing two jobbers with the Power-Plex, for a match taped for the August 19th edition of Wrestling Challenge.

House shows leading into August (before the heel turn with Slick was shown)...Roma was beating heel jobbers. Hercules was beating the likes of Dustin Rhodes.

On Aug 6, HBK appears with crutches....an "injury" Herc did to him weeks later at Summerslam (storyline). Michaels did have a legit injury.

Still beating face jobbers at TV taping in mid-August.

HEEL Hercules moved up the card to a time limit draw with Tito Santana shortly before SummerSlam.

At SummerSlam, POWER n GLORY crushed The Rockers. Shawn didnt wrestle, due to Herc "taking out" his knee with the chain. I believe the "heel turn" of Hercules happens above. Nothing MAJOR, just a new team with Roma that was arrogant. P & G were at the bottom of the tag totem pole til SSlam.

Ask Graham, he prob. knows for sure.

I dont' have it listed yet but after a Roma squash (he was the squashee, not the squasher), the Rockers came out for the next match and checked on Roma. Hercules came out to check on his friend / ocassional tag partner and he and Roma took exception to the Rockers being out there and jumped them. That was about it.

The Jake turn was due to the Honky guitar shot but he had been getting pops for quite a while, which prompted the face turn.

Piper and Orton kicked Orndorff out of their stable at the first SNME.

Valentine got out of the Jimmy Hart camp after Hart accidentally cost him a few wins in early 91, hitting Valentine with the megaphone on more than one ocassion.

Muraco and Orton started losing a number of tag matches to lesser teams in the summer of 87. After Muraco lost a match to Tito at the Boston Garden that summer, he actually shook his hand after the match. Orton didn't agree with that and the two argued their way backstage. There were a few miscommunications during TV tag matches which ultimately led to the two coming to blows. Muraco was the default face in that situation.

Orndorff also fired Heenan on TV during the course of his turn, leading to Heenan putting a $25,000 on Orndorff's head.

And yes, Orndorff fired Heenan to cement his second face turn in 1987 as well.

The match in question for Valentine was versus Saba Simba (Tony Atlas) IIRC.

The Muraco/Superstar relationship started when Muraco saved Graham from a OMG/Reed double team attack, but I can be wrong on that too.

Hercules 90 heel turn was WEAK if I may say so.

Ah yes, back in the day when the DDT was sold like death.
