re-installing Windows XP

Recommended Posts

I plan to re-format computer, but i seem to be missing my Windows XP CD so i borrowed a copy off a friend with the key. However it says on the disc, 'only use this cd to reinstall the OS on a dell-computer'. Will it still work on my IPC computer?

Possibly... but I would lean against there being an issue because usually the OS is partitioned on a certain part of the HD and the CD just basically runs that. Since you don't have that....

You can use any Windows XP cd to install, but the one that came with your computer most likely has drivers etc and a ghost image of what came preinstalled. If you use a non dell install cd you'd have to go to dell's website and download all their drivers. It's a lot easier to use the cd's they gave you, but it's not impossible to do it without them.

I've used someone else's Dell disc to reinstall XP, aaand it works just fine. Well, it will for the next 28 days, since the code's already been used up. WTG me~
