Highland 0 Report post Posted August 5, 2004 VANCOUVER -- With his face bruised and scarred and both eyes bloodied and nearly swollen shut, Kevin Venn looks more like a victim than a rescuer. But the 20-year-old Richmond resident is both. Venn was badly beaten when he tried to save a woman from an alleged sexual assault early Saturday morning. He came forward yesterday to plead with her to identify herself and help police identify the man who attacked them both. "I'm just hoping that she's OK and that she will come forward and just put an end to the threat he is putting on her liberty," Venn said yesterday, speaking publicly for the first time since police found him badly injured by the side of a road. Venn's ordeal began while he was on night duty as a gas station attendant. At about 12:45 a.m., he heard a woman scream and saw a man violently shake and try to restrain her. Venn told his supervisor to call 911 and crossed the parking lot with a fellow staff member to try to protect the woman from what he believed was a date rape in progress. Although Venn planned to calmly intervene, the exchange of words suddenly turned violent when the man -- who at more than 6-ft. tall easily overpowered Venn's slim, short frame -- attacked him with a drinking glass, slashing his forehead, breaking his nose and fracturing his skull before taking off on foot. The woman left too, as did the other gas attendant. Venn was finally taken to hospital where he received at least 40 stitches. Still, the Good Samaritan said he'd do it again. "I know I could take more of a beating than that female could," he said. "I still would have done something." Richmond RCMP Cpl. Dave Williams said Venn deserved staunch praise for his heroism. Good Samaritan beating CTV.ca News Staff RCMP in B.C. say they've found the woman who was saved from an attack last weekend by a "Good Samaritan." Kevin Venn, of Richmond, B.C., was left with a fractured skull, a broken jaw, a broken nose and several facial lacerations after coming to help the woman early last Saturday. He says he made a split-second decision to intervene when he heard the woman screaming across the street from the Petro-Canada gas station where he worked. What happened to him next is a mystery. He told a press conference Tuesday he can't remember the attack or what happened to the woman and the assailant afterwards. But he appealed for the woman to come forward. On Thursday, the RCMP said there had been a development: the woman called them Wednesday night. They say she is co-operating with investigators. They have not yet said if she's given them enough information to make an arrest in the beating. Venn says he saw a man trying to restrain the woman on the sidewalk and approached them to intervene. Before stepping in, he told his supervisor to call 911 and took a fellow co-worker to investigate. "He was trying to restrain her and he was shaking her in a violent manner," Venn said on Tuesday, displaying the full extent of his injuries with his purple, swollen eyes filled with blood. Police say that there are indications that the assailant hit Venn with a glass object. Police found Venn about 1,200 metres from the suspected scene of the assault at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning, over an hour after they responded to an assault call in the area and found nothing. He clawed over two city blocks in an attempt to get home. Venn says a friend on his way home was walking by and found him in a bloodied heap. It is unclear what happened to his co-worker, although police say they have spoken with the individual. Police say that it appears the woman knew her assailant and called him by the name "Chris" several times during the assault, although it is unclear whether Venn provided them with that information. He says he can't remember. Rape counsellor Suzanne Jay told CTV News she isn't surprised to hear that the woman probably knew the assailant. She says that about 90 per cent of sexual assaults are committed by someone the victim knows. "He's got some way of controlling her because he knows who she is, where she lives, maybe the people that she cares about," she said. In spite of his ghastly injuries, Venn says he would definitely do it again if he were in the same position again. This guy took some head injuries and scars in order to (quite possibly) save this woman's life. Given the reaction of the asshole when the guy confronted him, I'd say it's a good bet that the woman would have ended up in some serious straits had the situation escalated any further. The coworker is irrelevant at this point, and the woman came forward. Just because you couldn't be bothered to help someone in this situation (scared to take a few knocks maybe?), doesn't mean that this guy is a fool for doing so. Knives are easy to get, fun to use, and have various uses, and are much more silent, and don't need ammunition. There's also I think much more honor in fighting with a knife than with a gun. Pussy.
