When were you last a mark?

Recommended Posts

well I started watching wrestling as a real fan starting with survivor series 90. after that I watched wwf and wcw constantly, as well as local ny area indy feds on tv. I had always haeard aboutit being fake but always thought like a mark.

in 8th grade (96ish) we got the net on our school comps, but I didnt go to any smark sites, I was just looking for pics and themes

fall of 97 in 1oth grade i went online at school. at first mostly to wcw and wwf sites, but a friend of mine was always going to "rumor" saites, and in my search for wrestling sites I came across these and read that Glen Jacobs aka issac yankem aka fake diesel was going to be portraying kane (this was in sept 97 a month before kane debuted) I guess that technically started me off. But it finally changed in may of 98 when my family got webtv. I started reading sites like the internet wrestling zone, which had insider news and spoilers and the like. So the summer of 98 was when I first started thinking like a smark. One of the sites I went to had a column by a guy who practically worshipped Benoit. I finally found rantslyvania in sept 99 (senior year of high school) after that I started trying to thi k and talk like the keiths of the world, even if I didnt really know what I was saying. I even had my own column from december 99- may 00 on a small site called the Wrestling Cavern (called Frank's Bottom Line) where I basically ripped off every smark writer in how I reviewed the tv shows and news. man was that bad.

after 98 I didnt feel so bad to cheer for heels. jericho was one of the heel i actively cheered for in my smark era (as I had been a fan of his since I first saw him in wcw )

Lately I try not to be thinking all smarky like as it has ruined my enjoyment. as I have gotten older and stuff, I don't enjoy a show like I used to, as I can basically know whos going to win the big matches on ppvs and such. (and I was actually bored by some of the benoit dvd so go figure) Going to a live show reinvigorates the mark in me as well as watching wm or old tapes, or a good angle

but I guess I can't quit watching, if only by force of habit

(and this is coming from someone who subscribes to raw and sd magazine as well as taping every raw/sd and buying lots of tapes and dvds)

It all started for me in about 1995. I started getting on AOL and going to rumor sites(for some reason Micasa's site strikes my memory...if any of you remember that site.)to read what was going to happen. I also called a local wrestling "hotline" from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette to hear "insider" stuff, and I really blew a few of my friends minds at the time by telling them about it. Also this was a point were I was doing some backyarding(yeah, I was retarded at age 15) and really trying to find out as much as we could at the time about wrestling. Also, 95 coincidentially was the first year I ever went to an indy show........and I simply learned a lot by seeing how things work(a LOT less organized stuff than I was used to at the time and really exposed the business) and I basically have become a bigger fan since.

I loves me smarkdom...........

I got online in like late '96-early '97, so i spent most of the time on either learning about the human female anatomy or looking up things on wrestling. When one got me in trouble, i lost both.

By early '00 i was back on (had been off & online, i wasn't totally banned or anything), found the classic 2xzone.com during a report i was doing on sports entertainment. I remember it was like the DAY Benoit & the others left WCW, so when they showed up on RAW i was floored. Kept up somewhat ("The Kat is married to WHO?!"), fell out of it, got back in just in time for the invasion.

Marked out last: WM20 when Eddie came out to congradulate Benoit. it was so awesome seeing 2 guys who'd been through so much together BOTH have world titles at the most historically significant show in recent memory.

I was never really that much of a mark, but I still acted a lot like one when I was younger. For example, I knew stuff like Dibiase's partner at SS90 was supposed to be 'Mean' Mark Callous or that Big John Studd was going to win RR89, but I still had some markishness in me. It was definitely all out of my system by the time Flair showed up in the WWF in 1991, although I will still mark out on occasion, even today.

This may be a stupid question, but how did you know that stuff before the internet? Did you subscribe to all the "dirt sheets"?
