Bored's CFB Pick 'Em Contest Results - Week 1

Recommended Posts

Finally every team's picks are filled. A couple things to get out of the way first:

Tiebreaker change: A few posters were confused by the tiebreakers and I've decided to change it for Week 2. I will drop the tiebreaker picks and just go with the two tiebreaker questions as for the most part people did a good job of varying their answers. If there is ever a situation where both teams have the same answer for both tiebreaker questions the match-up will go to "overtime". This will involve picking the total points for the first game of the following week, typically the ESPN Thursday night game.

BCS tweak: Because we won't be selecting from the same number of games every week I will now into account each team's percentage of correct picks made and their opponents perecentage of correct picks made rather than total correct picks made. This just seems the only fair way to do it.

Now on to the match-ups and pick breakdowns to see who you should be rooting for this week. Obviously at the end of the week I'll post the results, standings, and the first regular season BCS Top 10 in this thread. Feel free to talk as much as shit as you want about your opponent.

Week 1 Useless Information

-Games everyone agreed on: Michigan over Miami of Ohio, Oklahoma over Bowling Green, Virginia over Temple, Tennessee over UNLV.

-Games with most differing picks: Oklahoma State over UCLA 17-15, Colorado over Colorado State 17-15, Louisiana Tech over Nevada 18-14.

-the pinjockey (Rutgers) was the only poster to pick Kentucky over Louisville.

One note other note is that ESPN has decided to show Central Florida/Wisconsin instead of the California/Air Force game. I have no idea why beyond that ESPN seems to show every single Wisconsin home game. So you'll only be able to see that game if you have ESPN Game Plan but all other games you can see besides the ABC regional games.

The FSU/Miami game has been postponed to next Friday. This obviously creates a problem since it was two of the tiebreakers. It's too late to add a tiebreaker so we'll just go with the New Mexico/Washington State and the Matt Leinart tiebreakers. The following match-ups can end up in a tie:

#5 Florida (Agent Bond34) vs. #6 Virginia (Edwin MacPhisto)

#1 Florida State (2GOLD) vs. Miami (Spaceman Spiff)

#8 Minnesota (Vern Gagne) vs. Washington State (bravesfan)

#9 LSU (teke184) vs. Michigan (Mad Dog)

#10 UCLA (phoenixrising) vs. Penn State (therealsworldchampion)

Michigan State (Dangerous A) vs. Rutgers (the pinjockey)

Auburn (Agent of Oblivion) vs. Texas (Flyboy)

Hawaii (Will Scarlet) vs. Alabama (AlwaysPissedOff)

Minnesota/Washington State and Auburn/Texas will be decided by the New Mexico/Wazzu result if they finish tied. All other match-ups above will be decided by the Matt Leinart question if there is a tie. For those wondering Leinart threw for 272 yards.

For next week I'll still have everyone make a pick for the Miami/FSU game so you will be able to change it if you so choose.

Can you go into more detail on why that is?

See this is why I'm dropping the current tiebreaker system after this week as it's confused too many people. Anyways you and Vern differed on an even number of games so if you split those six games you'll end up in a tie. The 2nd tiebreaker was who correctly picked the New Mexico/Washington State game. It's now the 1st tiebreaker because the FSU/Miami game was postponed. Again I'll be dropping this system for Week 2 and just going with the tiebreaker questions.

Edit: Oh and of course you two disagreed on the New Mexico/Washington State game so that's why it could decide your match-up. If you two had made the same pick it'd go the Leinart passing yardage question.

Doh.

I completely blanked on the fact that there is an order for tiebreakers (#1, #2, #3, #4). I understand now why we're going to that tiebreaker.

I'm screwed.

I need a sweep in the final two games or Spiff has me. Damn Notre Dame not knowing what the hell OFFENSE is.

Either Fresno St and Nevada win or I'm toast.

Why do I feel like I'm watching Chris Rix walk out onto the field against Miami with his helmet on backwards?

Normally on Sunday's I'll have the next week's Pick 'Em thread up but because we have games today and one game tommorrow I won't have it up until tommorrow afternoon at the earliest. Now if you want to get a head start on next week and make your picks now I'm going to give you that opportunity.

If you do want to make picks for Week 2 today send them by private message only. Do not post them in this thread.

Here are the games to pick from for Week 2 and the two tiebreaker questions. You are not required to make the same pick you made last week for FSU/Miami or the same total points for the tiebreaker

Thursday, September 9th

Missouri at Troy State

Friday, September 10th

Florida State at Miami

Oregon State at Boise State

Saturday, September 11th

UNLV at Wisconsin

Arizona State at Northwestern

Southern Miss at Nebraska

UCLA at Illinois

Fresno State at Kansas State

Michigan at Notre Dame

Marshall at Ohio State

Colorado at Washington State

North Carolina at Virginia

Wyoming at Texas A&M

Georgia at South Carolina

Houston at Oklahoma

Colorado State at USC

Georgia Tech at Clemson

Penn State at Boston College

Mississippi at Alabama

Texas at Arkansas

Tiebreaker #1: How many total points will be scored in the Florida State/Miami game?

Tiebreaker #2: How many total yards (passing & rushing) will Missouri's Brad Smith have against Troy State?

I've updated the scoreboard in the post before last. Everyone picked Tennessee so tonight's game has no meaning and there are just two games that will come down to tommorrow's Nevada/Louisiana Tech game.

If Louisiana Tech wins Miami beats #1 Florida State (by tiebreak) and Ohio State beats #2 Kent State

If Nevada wins #1 Florida State beats Miami and #2 Kent State beats Ohio State

Louisiana Tech is a 6 point favorite.

My fate lies in the hands of Nevada. They better play like the talented group they are supposed to.

Oh well, if I lose at least I lost to a rather brillant foe.

What pisses me off is if Oregon State had a kicker, I wouldn't have to rely on fucking Nevada.

Well, we are both done. Nevada doesn't seem like they are aware what exactly football is.

BCS Top 10 will be up shortly...

Now for the first regular season Bored Championship Series Top 10 rankings. Preasason rankings have no effect on these rankings. The formula is simple: Average ranking (from 1 to 32) of a team's win/loss record, percentage of correct picks made, and percentage of correct picks made by their opponent.

Since it's week 1 these rankings can be taken with a grain of salt and probably won't take any real shape for a few weeks. For example when it comes to win/loss record you are either ranked #1 or #17 at this point. If you did really well this week but your opponent did poorly your ranking won't be as good as you might think. Also if you lost this week but did well you might be pleasantly surprised. So just like the real BCS we'll have CONTROVERSY~!

Note to break any ties in the rankings I go in order of win/loss record, perecentage of correct picks made, and then percentage of correct picks against. Two teams in the Top 10 had the exact same result in their matcH-ups this week thus they are tied.

Now *drum roll*...The BCS Top 10 thru Week 1

Well, it's certainly more exciting than winning thanks to errant game-ending field goal #857.

I'll be back in the Top 10 by the end of Week 3.
