Help identify movie for my column

Recommended Posts

This sounds like it could be a lot of different flicks, wanted to see what you guys thought. Thanks again.

"I've been trying to figure out the title to a movie for a long time now with no luck, not even from my dad, who was the reason I used to watch this movie. All I can remember is that at the beginning somehow most everyone in the world is dead, and the star of the film is alone. It seems to me the first we see him is in an office building or something, but my memory is hazy. I remember he wanders around and realizes no one is left, so if memory serves me right he lives it up staying in some dead guys huge house. Eventually he runs into a chick so they team up to wander the earth. Then he runs into another guy, whom I remember asks our hero if he's found anyone else and he says no, trying to hide the girl. Then the new guy sees the girl, is mad at first, but then laughs or something like that. The last thing I remember is the three of them sitting around a fire in the middle of a city. I never saw the rest of the movie and must find out what damn movie it is so I can watch the rest. The only other thing of note that I can remember is I didn't know how everyone died, but buildings and houses weren't damaged in anyway I can recall. I don't think there were bodies everywhere either. PLEASE HELP. Thank you"

That definitely sounds like The Omega Man. It also sounds exactly like I Am Legend, by Richard Matheson, which was the basis for The Omega Man. Definitely a recommended read, btw.

I Am Legend is a great book, and I'm not a big reader.

It does sound like Omega Man, but I'd think deacon would've already thought about it. Could also be day of the triffids.

I'm the one who e-mailed asking about that movie, and I'm pretty sure it's not Omega man. One, I don't think it was Charlton Heston, and two, from the part of the movie I saw, there were no zombies or crazy people or any people but the three I saw. Didn't Omega man have some zombie type people early on?

Yeah, well in I Am Legend they're vampires.. I'm not exactly sure what they were supposed to be in Omega Man. Technology shunning disfigured freaks who're sensitive to light. :P

The creatures in I Am Legend are vampires. In Omega Man they're pale skinned, red eyed mutants who are sensitive to light.

Reading up on the Omega Man that diffenently isn't the one. But from what I could find on imdb.com "Last man on Earth" with Vincent Price sounds like that might be it.

Edit: Actually now that I read more on it I don't think it's Last Man on Earth either. Maybe my memory is just playing tricks on me, but I don't remember any kind of undead or any monsters at all for the half or however much of the movie I saw. I know the survivor had found a girl and a guy at least without running into any baddies, since he'd found them in what I saw of the movie. It's also in color, not B&W. I'm never going to figure out what stupid movie this was.

I had a few ideas and already thought of stuff like Omega Man and Last Man on Earth. I also have some other feelers out. I was really thinking it was either The Day the World Ended or Target Earth both starring Richard Denning, but both of those are in black and white. Don't worry, smues, I'm still looking.

Looked up that one, found this:

"While on a camping trip, a family witnesses a brilliant flash of light in the sky. As they make their way home they realize a solar explosion has wiped everyone out and a deadly virus is sweeping the land."

Had my hopes up until I saw that, but there was no family. This would be a lot easier if I'd ever seen the whole movie and not just the first half or however long it was, but I swear I saw that thing a dozen times and for some reason never watched the whole thing.

Yeah, they're both based on the same book anyways. :)

Hopefully someone finds out soon because now it's bugging the shit out of me!!

I think I know the movie you're describing, but I can't remember the name. I originally thought it was This Island Earth, but that's the name of a fifties alien movie.

The movie I'm thinking of was done in eighties, has a white guy, a white girl, and a black guy, and they are British or Australian. It's kind of weird flick, but okay.

By god I think that's the movie. I found this on the movie.

"Synopsis: A strange cosmic event occurs. Zac Hobson (Bruno Lawrence) wakes in a motel room on the outskirts of Auckland to find a blazing sun high in the sky, though it is only 6.12 a.m. Zac turns on the radio, but hears only static, and when he tries to make a phone-call, it rings out. He dresses and heads for work as usual. Stopping for petrol, Zac finds the garage deserted. An abandoned coffee pot boils on the stove, while the men’s room, although locked from the inside, is unoccupied. Zac drives through the town, blowing the horn of his car, but sees no-one. Desperate, Zac breaks into a house. Water is pouring through the ceiling from an upstairs bathroom; the beds have been slept in; but no people are there. Further along the road, Zac comes upon an abandoned petrol truck. He tries using its radio to call for help, but there is no reply. Zac drives into Auckland. It is totally deserted. Climbing a hill, Zac sees a large fire. When he inspects the site, he finds that a plane has crashed, but there are no bodies. Zac drives to the Research Division of the Delenko Corporation, where he works: an extensive research facility with a full sized satellite dish on the roof. The facility, too, is deserted. Inside, Zac finds a computer print-out indicating that something called Project Flashlight is proceeding. Beginning to panic, Zac admits himself into a high security area below ground. A computer screen readout announces that Operation Flashlight is complete. Inside a room labelled Grid Control, Zac is momentarily thrilled to see another human being – then realises that his companion is dead; dead, and horribly disfigured. The facility’s automatic emergency system activates as the levels of radiation suddenly escalate. As there is no-one in administration, Zac is trapped. In order to escape, he rigs a homemade bomb using a blowtorch and some oxygen cylinders. Taking cover, Zac plays back the last message he recorded on his personal dictator, in which he voiced his belief that the people in charge of the Delenko Corporation were withholding vital information from himself and his colleagues. A huge explosion rips through the facility, allowing Zac to reach the outside. He goes to a radio station, and sets up a constant broadcast of his name, address and phone number. Five days later, however, there has been no response. Zac moves into a mansion, and for some time indulges himself by living in luxury and stealing everything he ever wanted to own. Then his mind begins to deteriorate. He talks to himself constantly, and dresses in women’s clothes. Finally, rigging up a public address system and creating for himself an audience consisting of cardboard cutouts of historical figures and other famous people, Zac announces that as the only human being left alive, he is declaring himself President of "this quiet Earth"….."

And the IMDB summary mentioned finding the woman and then the guy. That has to be the movie. THANK YOU.

I must see that movie now...I love post apocalypse deserted earth movies. I'm always disappointed when people in disaster movies keep the majority of humans from being wiped out.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Night of the Comet

Glad I could help out, buddy.

Yeah, Satanico, you should check it out. Very atmospheric. It does a damn good job of capturing the feeling of being all alone. It's pretty interesting. That summary that Smues posted only goes through the first part of the movie, and it only gets more interesting from there.

Good luck finding it. The video is OOP and the DVD was only released in the UK.

I found a few videos on Ebay and they were cheap, but I hate buying videos. The DVD is region 0 so my DVD player will read it, but I don't know if my TVs can display PAL video format. I always thought US TVs weren't able to handle PAL, but I'm not positive.
