What are the most gerrymandered/weirdest

Recommended Posts

Here in Missouri, we don't get that stuff.. but..

here's the site: http://nationalatlas.gov/congdistprint.html

All credit to South Carolina for making their District 1 less crazy. The book I have with 90s districts makes it look like a mushroom going inland from Charleston to Berkeley county and on the coast. The current district looks more sane.

I'm sure i'm ignoring some all-stars in Texas..

note to district drawers: it's possible to make a district which doesn't look like an LSD trip, this one's to you Georgia!

Interesting that Maryland is mentioned twice. My district (the 8th) was recently gerrymandered to include a good chunk of our neighboring county, which is heavily Democratic and minority before the 02 election, which led to the 8 term Republican Congresswoman (almost liberal, and very popular in the disctrict obviously) being unseated by a generally poor candidate who had a D next to his name because the new part of the disctrict wasn't familiar with her. It basically has eliminated the chances for any Republican being elected (which sucks because I really like the candidate this year).

If you want to see a gerrymandered district, see if you can find the Louisiana 4th District from the mid-90s. It was shaped like a "Z" and stretched from Shreveport to Monroe to Baton Rouge to Bogalusa.

It was around that time that Cleo Fields (D-Baton Rouge) began to be referred to as "Zorro" because the district was gerrymandered to give him a seat.

As for William Jefferson's 2nd District, it's a tradeoff. The state would get sued if there was no majority black district, so William Jefferson gets an eternal seat because Orleans Parish itself has around the number of people needed for a Congressional district (roughly 700,000) and the city of New Orleans itself is like 90% black. (Most white people have moved to the suburbs in places such as Jefferson Parish and St. Bernard Parish.)

I'm still sorta conflicted on the idea of a "majority black" district.. sure, it's nice.. but it also probably doesn't help the Democratic party by putting a heavily Democratic group in just one district.

Louisiana is on to something with having elections in Saturday. That's something the rest of this country should think about trying
