Bored 0 Report post Posted September 24, 2004 Before I post the match-up breakdowns as I alluded to in the pick thread I want to present two ideas to you guys on how I should handle dead teams. It appears Boise State will forfeit for a second straight week and effectively end any chance of anyone taking over that team winning the contest so I will declare it dead. I do not want forfeits for the rest of the year for Boise State so here are my two ideas: Idea #1: I will have Boise State (or any other dead team) pick the favorites for each game based on the point spread. Idea #2: I will let someone already in the contest volunteer (it would be first come, first serve although not until I make a decision on which idea I use) to take over Boise State. It can not be anyone still on Boise State's schedule and they would have to make the same picks for Boise that they make for their own team. For either idea Boise State will be on "probation" and can not participate in the Pac-8 Conference Championship or any bowl game. Let me know what idea you guy's prefer and I'll make a decision on it this weekend. Bored 0 Report post Posted September 24, 2004 Week 4 Useless Information -Not many differing picks yet only one pick everyone agreed on: Florida over Kentucky. -With the lack of differing picks the biggest variation in picks was Arkansas over Alabama 20-11. -On their own this week: JHawk (Kent State) lost his mind was the only poster to pick Houston over Miami and Stanford over USC; Spaceman Spiff (Miami) picked Washington over Notre Dame; Dangerous A (Michigan State) picked Northwestern over Minnesota. iggymcfly 0 Report post Posted September 24, 2004 For Boise State, I'd say the best thing to do would be to just go with the Vegas favorites. We don't need somebody repeated throughout the contest. This way, Boise can be competitive without making anything too complicated. By the way, how exactly are we dealing with my Bowling Green team? Do I get a 0 for my picks last week? (which would pretty much guarantee a last place finish for a third of my BCS points). I was hoping that since I just took over, you could just average the weeks where picks were made, or at least give me the same number of picks for Week 3 as whoever got last. Guest Flyboy Report post Posted September 24, 2004 Just FYI, Bored, I changed Arizona to WSU when you told me to make a pick for the BYU game so that shouldn't be different.
Bored 0 Report post Posted September 24, 2004 You can't change your picks so your Arizona picks stays. By the way, how exactly are we dealing with my Bowling Green team? teke184 0 Report post Posted September 25, 2004 There's 3 minutes left in the Bowling Green vs. Northern Illinois game and the score is NI 31-17. Barring a miracle comeback by Bowling Green, this could have some major repercussions in a lot of games, especially for Oklahoma (Dama), who'll probably pick up his first loss. MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2004 I'm doing pretty good after that first crappy week. 3-1 now which should be good enough to at least get a shot at a ranking... Im still trying to figure out how Mad Dog, playing as Michigan, didn't pick Michigan...
Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted September 26, 2004 Mostly because Michigan has sucked against Iowa the last few years added with the fact that Michigan barely beat San Diego St. last week.
Bored 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2004 CORRECTION I said Maryland held the tiebreak on their match-up but actually Michigan does (BG/NIU scored 51 total points). That match-up has not been decided then and hinges on the outcome of the Arizona State/Oregon State game. If Oregon State wins, Mad Dog would win by tiebreak. Sorry for the mistake. LSU (teke184) def. #10 Kent State (JHawk) JHawk's Stanford pick almost paid off but ends up costing him the match-up.

Bored 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2004 You people thought you were pissed last week? BCS Top 10 thru Week 4 1. Virginia - Edwin MacPhisto 5.00 (10/4/1) 2. Minnesota - Vern Gagne 6.33 (10/8/1) 3. Ohio State - Gert T 6.67 (1/1/18) 4. Syracuse - Canadian Chris 7.33 (5/8/9) 5. Hawaii - Will Scarlet 7.33 (10/3/9) 6. Washington State - bravesfan 7.67 (1/4/18) 7. Auburn - Agent of Oblivion 8.33 (10/8/7) 8. Oregon - nogoodnick 9.00 (10/8/9) 9. Oklahoma - Damaramu 10.33 (5/2/24) 10. Notre Dame - Lando Griffin 10.67 (1/7/24) Okay, I'll think about changing the formula if there is enough outrage over this. If a change is made those rankings won't go into effect until next week because I need to the Week 5 thread up ASAP since there is a Wednesday game this week. IF a change is wanted I have three ideas already in mind so no suggestions are needed.

2GOLD 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2004 Lemme get this straight... Minnesota has lost two games and wasn't even RANKED last week somehow actually moves past #2 Ohio State who is undefeated and just beat #5? Meanwhile, #1 VA loses and yet remains ranked at the top. Congrats Bored, you are now a master of the actual BCS system. Kudos to you sir!

2GOLD 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2004 Hmmm, maybe I'm just an evil genius? Trust me 2GOLD you don't want to see your ranking. If I'm not just ahead of Boise State then something is wrong. I get the feeling YOUR ranking system would drive me to drinking. Hell, the actual BCS "explanation" booklet I got sent nearly drove me to drinking liquified cocaine. iggymcfly 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2004 I know you said you already have an idea, but I like to stick my nose in places, so I just wanted to say that if you use percents instead of ranks, it would help. i.e. 4-0 = 1.00, 3-1 = .750, 2-2 =.500 85% picks made = 0.85, 80% picks correct = 0.80, 80% picks against = 0.80, 70% picks against = 0.70, etc., etc., If you want the low number to get it, then just switch wins for losses, and picks right for picks wrong. Bored 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2004 Well since no one seems to be that mad about the rankings, and maybe even like them in a perverse sense, I guess I'll stick with the rankings but here were the three alternative ideas: Win/loss record (.50) + total pick pct. (.25) + strength of schedule (.25) = 1. Ohio State 2. Washington State 3. Virginia 4. Syracuse 5. Minnesota 6. Hawaii 7. Notre Dame 8. Stanford 9. Auburn 10. Oklahoma Win/loss record (.70) + total pick pct. (.20) + strength of schedule (.10) = 1. Ohio State 2. Washington State 3. Stanford 4. Notre Dame 5. Syracuse 6. Oklahoma 7. Virginia 8. LSU 9. Hawaii 10. Minnesota Or a "super poll" which would take the two above formulas and and the current formula and combine them. 1. Ohio State 2. Washington State 3. Virginia 4. Syracuse 5. Minnesota 6. Notre Dame 7. Hawaii 8. Stanford 9. Oklahoma 10. Auburn
